M184V is a single-base mutation in the YMDD domain of reverse transcriptase (RT). The M184V resistance-associated mutation (RAM) is related to virological unresponsiveness to lamivudine (3TC) and emtricitabine (FTC) and induces high-level resistance to these two antiretroviral agents. M184V is rapidly selected in the setting of non-suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART) and accumulates in the HIV reservoir.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study involving 249 participants classified them based on the WHO clinical progression scale, highlighting that elderly patients with comorbidities were more likely to develop severe respiratory issues.
  • * Certain genetic polymorphisms (-rs1834481, -rs5743708, and -rs4986791) were identified as independent risk factors, suggesting they could serve as molecular predictors for the severity of COVID-19 in infected individuals.

The COVID-19 pandemic represents one of the greatest challenges in modern medicine. The disease is characterized by a variable clinical phenotype, ranging from asymptomatic carriage to severe and/or critical disease, which bears poor prognosis and outcome because of the development of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (SARS) requiring ICU hospitalization, multi-organ failure and death. Therefore, the determination of risk factors predisposing to disease phenotype is of outmost importance.
