Case Presentation: This report describes the complete coverage of a Class III GR with the combination of a free subepithelial connective tissue graft and a laterally positioned flap. After treatment for GR of the mandibular right canine with 12 mm of clinical attachment loss, there was complete coverage and an increase in keratinized gingiva.

Background: Identifying and tackling the social determinants of infectious diseases has become a public health priority following the recognition that individuals with lower socioeconomic status are disproportionately affected by infectious diseases. In many parts of the world, epidemiologically and genotypically defined community-associated (CA) methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains have emerged to become frequent causes of hospital infection. The aim of this study was to use spatial models with adjustment for area-level hospital attendance to determine the transmission niche of genotypically defined CA- and health-care-associated (HA)-MRSA strains across a diverse region of South East London and to explore a potential link between MRSA carriage and markers of social and material deprivation.

Insidious manifestation of pyogenic liver abscess caused by Streptococcus intermedius and Micrococcus luteus: a case report.

Pyogenic liver abscesses are caused by various microorganisms and usually present with fever, abdominal pain, leukocytosis and liver enzyme abnormalities. This case presents the insidious manifestation of a pyogenic liver abscess in a 34-year-old immunocompetent male, where classical manifestations of a liver abscess were absent. The microorganisms cultured from the abscess belonged to oral cavity's and gastrointestinal tract's normal flora.

Objectives: Both low-level mupirocin resistance (LMR) and high-level mupirocin resistance (HMR) have been identified. The aim of this study was to determine the epidemiology of LMR and HMR in MRSA isolates at five hospitals that have used mupirocin for targeted decolonization as part of successful institutional control programmes.

Methods: All MRSA identified in three microbiology laboratories serving five central and south-east London hospitals and surrounding communities between November 2011 and February 2012 were included.

Esophageal achalasia is a primary motility disorder characterized by impaired lower esophageal sphincter relaxation and absence of esophageal peristalsis leading to impaired bolus transit, manifested with symptoms such as dysphagia, regurgitation, retrosternal pain, and weight loss. The standard diagnostic tool is esophageal manometry which demonstrates incomplete relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter and impaired esophageal peristalsis. Recently, a new advanced technique, high-resolution manometry (HRM) with the addition of pressure topography plotting, using multiple sensors to capture the manometric data as a spatial continuum, allows a detailed pressure recording of the esophageal motility.

Epithelial folding is a critical process underlying many morphogenetic events including vertebrate neural tube closure, however, its spatial regulation is largely unknown. Here we show that during neural tube formation Rab11-positive recycling endosomes acquire bilaterally symmetric distribution in the Xenopus neural plate, being enriched at medial apical cell junctions. This mediolateral polarization was under the control of planar cell polarity (PCP) signalling, was necessary for neural plate folding and was accompanied by the polarization of the exocyst component Sec15.

Rapid single-colony whole-genome sequencing of bacterial pathogens.

Objectives: As a result of the introduction of rapid benchtop sequencers, the time required to subculture a bacterial pathogen to extract sufficient DNA for library preparation can now exceed the time to sequence said DNA. We have eliminated this rate-limiting step by developing a protocol to generate DNA libraries for whole-genome sequencing directly from single bacterial colonies grown on primary culture plates.

Methods: We developed our protocol using single colonies of 17 bacterial pathogens responsible for severe human infection that were grown using standard diagnostic media and incubation conditions.

Nucleotide binding protein 1 (Nubp1) is a highly conserved phosphate loop (P-loop) ATPase involved in diverse processes including iron-sulfur protein assembly, centrosome duplication and lung development. Here, we report the cloning, expression and functional characterization of Xenopus laevis Nubp1. We show that xNubp1 is expressed maternally, displays elevated expression in neural tissues and is required for convergent extension movements and neural tube closure.

Complement depletion protects lupus-prone mice from ischemia-reperfusion-initiated organ injury.

Ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury causes a vigorous immune response that is amplified by complement activation, leading to local and remote tissue damage. Using MRL/lpr mice, which are known to experience accelerated tissue damage after mesenteric IR injury, we sought to evaluate whether complement inhibition mitigates organ damage. We found that complement depletion with cobra venom factor protected mice from local and remote lung tissue damage.

Liver iron and serum ferritin levels are misleading for estimating cardiac, pancreatic, splenic and total body iron load in thalassemia patients: factors influencing the heterogenic distribution of excess storage iron in organs as identified by MRI T2*.

A comparative assessment of excess storage iron distribution in the liver, heart, spleen and pancreas of β-thalassemia major (β-ΤΜ) patients has been carried out using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) relaxation times T2*. The β-ΤΜ patients (8-40 years, 11 males, 9 females) had variable serum ferritin levels (394-5603 μg/L) and were treated with deferoxamine (n = 10), deferiprone (n = 5) and deferoxamine/deferiprone combination (n = 5). MRI T2* assessment revealed that excess iron is not proportionally distributed among the organs but is stored at different concentrations in each organ and the distribution is different for each β-ΤΜ patient.
