Selective compression neuropathy of the lateral branch of the deep peroneal nerve is rare. A 55-year-old woman with ankle instability and mild weakness of extension of the toes was examined with sonography (US), which revealed the presence of a ganglion cyst compressing selectively the lateral branch of the deep peroneal nerve. US-guided aspiration of the cyst resulted in nerve decompression and progressive resolution of symptoms.

Background: Serotonin exhibits a vast repertoire of actions including cell proliferation and differentiation. The effect of serotonin, as an incomplete mitogen, on liver regeneration has recently been unveiled and is mediated through 5-HT2 receptor. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of 5-HT7 receptor blockade on liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy.

The skin may exhibit the first clinical evidence of a systemic disease and may provide the first clues to a diagnosis in malignancies. Erythroderma is defined as generalized redness and scaling and it is a clinical manifestation of a variety of underlying diseases including, rarely, solid tumors. Breast cancer is associated with a variety of skin paraneoplastic manifestations like acanthosis nigricans, erythromelalgia, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, acrokeratosis paraneoplastica, dermatomyositis, systemic sclerosis, and scleroderma.

Introduction: Giant cell arteritis is the most common form of large-vessel vasculitides. However, it is probable that extracranial involvement is underdiagnosed in patients with classical giant cell arteritis. In the recent literature most cases of giant cell arteritis have been described in conjunction with aortic aneurysms or dissections.

Objective: Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) have recently been considered as a potential novel marker of vascular integrity, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk. This study was performed to investigate the main determinants of EPC levels in individuals with prediabetes.

Design: Thirty-nine participants with newly diagnosed prediabetes were enrolled.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) represents a pattern of non-malignant growth of prostatic fibromuscular stroma. Metabolic disturbances such us pre-diabetes and metabolic syndrome may have a role in BPH pathophysiology. A potential explanation for the above relationship involves the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) axis as well as IGF binding proteins, (IGFBPs) of which the most abundant form is IGFBP-3.

Background: Central arterial stiffness represents a well-established predictor of cardiovascular disease. Decreased circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), increased asymmetric dimethyl-arginine (ADMA) levels, traditional cardiovascular risk factors and insulin resistance have all been associated with increased arterial stiffness. The correlations of novel and traditional cardiovascular risk factors with central arterial stiffness in prediabetic individuals were investigated in the present study.

Background And Purpose: The available data regarding the association between metabolic syndrome (MS) or MS components and ischemic stroke in type 2 diabetics are limited and inconsistent. This study aimed to investigate these associations.

Methods: Five hundred ninety-nine consecutive type 2 diabetic patients (mean age 60.

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Recent studies indicate that atrial fibrillation (AF) is prevalent among ESRD patients while it adversely affects the clinical outcome. Despite these considerations, AF management in this population is problematic.

Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) represent insulin-sensitizing agents that have several pleiotropic properties, possibly related to their favorable effects on cardiovascular remodeling. We briefly describe 2 diabetic patients who experienced a remarkable improvement in their paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) after treatment with rosiglitazone. Current evidence suggests that atrial remodeling represents a prominent mechanism of AF development and perpetuation while inflammation and oxidative stress are possibly implicated in this process.

Background: There is no consistent evidence regarding the prognostic value of metabolic syndrome (MS) in predicting all-cause mortality and coronary heart disease (CHD) risk among type 2 diabetic patients. We sought to investigate whether individual or various combinations of MS components have a different predictive value than the presence of MS in this setting.

Methods: Six hundred type 2 diabetic patients (mean age 60.

Background: Patients with diabetes already fulfill one diagnostic criterion for MS according to the existing classifications. Our aim was to identify one single clinical parameter, which could effectively predict the presence of MS in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Methods: We studied all patients with type 2 diabetes who attended our Diabetes Outpatient Clinic during a three-month period.
