Risk factors for low bone mass in patients with ulcerative colitis following ileal pouch-anal anastomosis.

Objectives: Bone mineral density (BMD) can be adversely affected by the chronic nature of inflammatory bowel disease. Ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) is the surgical treatment of choice for patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) who require proctocolectomy. There are few data on BMD in UC patients with IPAA.

Risk factors for anemia in patients with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis.

Purpose: Anemia is frequently observed in patients with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis. The identification of the underlying causes can be challenging. This study was designed to define the prevalence and to identify etiologic factors for anemia in this patient population.
