Article Synopsis
  • - Severe leaf spot symptoms were first noted in June 2017 among Josapine pineapples in Alor Pongsu, Malaysia, leading to plant death after the infection spread from small brown spots to large lesions.
  • - Between 2018 and 2023, 10-15% disease incidence was reported in pineapple farms across Johor, Kedah, and Sarawak, prompting a study to identify the causal pathogen through sample collection and testing.
  • - The potential pathogen, after isolation and analysis, was identified as Neoscytalidium species, showing specific morphological characteristics such as branched mycelia and distinct arthroconidia shapes.

Endophytic fungi inhabit apparently healthy plant tissues and are prevalent in terrestrial plants, especially root tissues, which harbour a wide assemblage of fungal endophytes. Therefore, this study focused on the isolation and characterisation of endophytic fungi from the roots of wild banana (Musa acuminata). A total of 31 isolates of endophytic fungi were isolated from 80 root fragments.
