Introduction It has been known that progesterone has central effects, as measured by minimum alveolar concentration in various experimental settings. Previously, we showed that progesterone reduces the sevoflurane requirement for the loss of righting reflex (LORR) using male mice. However, the combination of progesterone and isoflurane has not been studied.

Article Synopsis
  • Phosphatidylcholine (PC)-specific phospholipase C (PC-PLC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE)-specific PLC (PE-PLC) have been found in mammalian tissue but their specific genes and proteins have been largely unidentified for decades.
  • Recent studies indicate that human sphingomyelin synthase 2 (SMS2) exhibits both PC-PLC and PE-PLC activities along with other enzymatic functions, marking it as a significant enzyme with multiple roles.
  • In experiments, SMS2 showed substrate selectivity for certain types of phospholipids and was inhibited by specific compounds like D609 and zinc, suggesting its unique enzymatic properties as a potential long-sought mammalian PC

  • The thermal dissociation cavity attenuated phase shift spectroscopy (TD-CAPS) instrument has been enhanced to accurately measure atmospheric total peroxy nitrates (PNs) and organic nitrates (ONs) in high NOx conditions.
  • The original TD-CAPS system overestimated concentrations of PNs and ONs due to the conversion of NO to NO2 in heated quartz tubes, caused by peroxy radicals.
  • The new system addresses this issue by adding excess ozone to convert NO to NO2 after the quartz tubes, which improved measurement accuracy with less than 20% uncertainty and a detection limit of 0.018 ppbv.

Background: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a well-recognized cardiac dysfunction in infants of mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) is a cardiomyopathy that is morphologically characterized by numerous prominent trabeculations and deep intertrabecular recesses on cardiovascular imaging. However, there have been no case reports on neonates of mothers with GDM showing LVH and LVNC.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how telomere length, which indicates aging, is affected in patients with alcohol use disorder, revealing significantly shorter telomeres compared to a control group.
  • - Analysis shows that factors such as longer smoking duration and a history of diabetes are associated with even shorter telomeres among those with alcohol use disorder.
  • - The findings suggest that addressing smoking cessation in addition to alcohol addiction treatment could help support healthier aging in these patients.

Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is a rare disorder characterized by continuous or intermittent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage from the CSF cavity, which causes symptoms such as headache or neck pain upon standing. However, no well-established measures concerning the type of delivery and anesthesia for pregnant women with a history of SIH have been reported. A woman had developed SIH 9 years earlier from lifting luggage into an overhead bin with stretching movements, which required continuous saline epidural infusion for recovery.

The title cluster compound, [Mo(η-CHMe)(μ-Se)], was synthesized from the reaction of [Mo(η-CHMe)(CO)] with grey selenium in refluxing xylene solution under a nitro-gen atmosphere. The complete cluster is generated by a crystallographic twofold axis and contains an MoSe cubane-like core surrounded by four η-methylcyclo-pentadienyl ligands. In the core, the four molybdenum atoms are connected to each other to form a tetra-hedron, with a selenium atom capping each face.

Cardiac function indices must be calculated using tracing from short-axis images in cine-MRI. A 3D-CNN (convolutional neural network) that adds time series information to images can estimate cardiac function indices without tracing using images with known values and cardiac cycles as the input. Since the short-axis image depicts the left and right ventricles, it is unclear which motion feature is captured.

Background: The local anesthetic concentration required for ultrasound-guided rectus sheath block (RSB) in children remains unknown. Knowledge of appropriate ropivacaine concentration can help clinicians reduce local anesthetic toxicity risk when performing ultrasound-guided RSB in children. This study aimed to determine the appropriate ropivacaine concentration for ultrasound-guided RSB in children undergoing laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. The standard of care for advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) without driver-gene mutations is a combination of an anti-PD-1/PD-L1 antibody and chemotherapy, or an anti-PD-1/PD-L1 antibody and an anti-CTLA-4 antibody with or without chemotherapy. Although there were fewer cases of disease progression in the early stages of combination treatment than with anti-PD-1/PD-L1 antibodies alone, only approximately half of the patients had a long-term response.

Background: Carcinoid tumors can on rare occasions ectopically produce adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), causing Cushing's syndrome, and patients could become immunocompromised. Care must therefore be taken regarding infectious complications. In particular, ACTH-producing pulmonary carcinoid is not easy to diagnose by itself, and when combined with pulmonary nodules as infectious foci, each is very difficult to diagnose.
