Quantification of cyanobacterial CO fixation rates is vital to determining their potential as industrial strains in a circular bioeconomy. Currently, however, CO fixation rates are most often determined through indirect and/or low-resolution methods, resulting in an incomplete picture of both dynamic behaviors and total carbon fixation potential. To address this, we developed the "Automated Carbon and CO Experimental Sampling System" (ACCESS); a low-cost system for in situ off-gas analysis that supports the automated acquisition of high-resolution volumetric CO uptake rates from multiple cyanobacterial cultures in parallel.

A number of people experiencing a mental health crisis who present to a hospital emergency department (ED) do not wait (DNW) for assessment or care and leave. This phenomenon is poorly understood and offers an opportunity to enhance quality of care. We sought to understand the characteristics and reasons of those who DNW for assessment or care, and what happens after leaving the ED.

Background: It is known that even under static conditions a backpack wearer will need to make some adjustments to maintain postural stability. There is a paucity of research exploring the impact of altering the position of the feet with imposed loads of variable distance from the posterior midline.

Objective: Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine if changes in the horizontal position of a fixed load when wearing a backpack affect specific variables derived from foot tracings of males and females standing with their self-selected natural feet position.

Article Synopsis
  • Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a rising concern in individuals living with HIV, specifically impacting children with perinatally acquired HIV (PHIV) on antiretroviral therapy (ART).
  • A study followed 263 children over two years, comparing those with PHIV on older ART regimens and those switched to a newer regimen (TLD) with children without HIV (HU).
  • Results indicated that PHIV on older ART had significantly higher controlled attenuation parameters (CAP) suggesting greater liver fat compared to HU, but those switched to TLD showed no differences, indicating early ART intervention may help prevent liver damage.

Introduction: People with a borderline personality disorder (BPD) diagnosis or symptoms may experience emotional crises which necessitate use of the emergency department (ED). No existing reviews focus specifically on experiences of consumers, carers and clinicians in relation to ED presentations by people diagnosed with BPD.

Aim/question: The aim of this study was to synthesise knowledge on consumer, carer and clinician experiences of BPD in the ED.

Programs aimed at preventing child sexual abuse typically focus on skilling up young children and, to a lesser extent, parents by imparting a range of protective messages. Many sexual abuse prevention programs include a focus on identifying or vetting "safe" or "trustworthy" people. The authors qualitatively analyzed the content of narratives from individuals with childhood experience of intrafamilial sexual abuse, an under-represented voice in the development of child sexual abuse prevention programs.

Background: Increases in child welfare investigations involving children's exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) in Ontario are likely the result of three factors: 1) changes to legislation, policy, and assessment instruments; 2) increased awareness of the risks of exposure to IPV for children, and 3) referrals from professionals (e.g., police).

Multiple system reforms in Australia, including the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), are changing mental health (MH) and disability-related service provision, whilst policy drivers continue to require service integration. This has necessitated service providers discovering new ways of working collaboratively to achieve an integrated model of care. This qualitative study examined what does and does not work to support collaborative and coordinated care (CCC), as essential components of service integration.

Background: Many chiropractors use spinal manipulative techniques (SMT) to treat spinal pain. A recent Delphi study posited 18 items across five domains as predictors of patients experiencing non-specific low back pain most likely to experience a strong and immediate positive response to SMT. We sought to create a 'pen and paper' questionnaire that would measure these items and then pilot its use in a clinical setting to determine its 'usability' for a larger study.

Systematic reviews (SRs) provide a solution to handle information overload for busy clinicians by summarising and synthesizing studies on a specific issue. However, because SRs are complicated and often boring to read, the busy or reluctant reader may make do with the abstract. When, as it has been shown, many authors overstate efficacy or understate harm in their abstracts, not consulting the underlying article could be misleading.

Introduction: Lung disease remains a frequent complication in children with perinatal HIV infection (CHIV) and exposure without infection (CHEU), resulting in diminished lung function. In CHIV, early antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation improves survival and extrapulmonary outcomes. However, it is unknown if there is benefit to lung function.

Article Synopsis
  • - The review highlights concerns about the potential effects of the contraceptive DMPA-IM on the female genital tract, particularly regarding the risk of HIV infection among cisgender women in Africa.
  • - Previous studies indicated that DMPA-IM users exhibited higher levels of bacterial vaginosis, inflammation, and changes in cervical health, raising worries about STI risks.
  • - However, findings from the ECHO Trial suggest that DMPA-IM does not negatively impact vaginal health or increase STI risk, indicating it can be considered safe for women at high risk of STIs, including HIV.

Background: The use of point of care ultrasound (PoCUS) in the management of musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders is a diverse area of PoCUS practice. Its use by clinicians, such as physiotherapists, can occur across a wide range of roles and care pathway configurations; however, professional, educational and regulatory uncertainties can leave clinicians, managers and patients at risk.

Main Body: A PoCUS framework approach (previously applied to support PoCUS consolidation and expansion) is used to frame these proposals.

Introduction: HIV is associated with accelerated cardiovascular disease, due to HIV-associated metabolic abnormalities, antiretroviral therapy (ART), and HIV itself. Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) is the noninvasive gold standard measurement of arterial stiffness, and associated with incident vascular events in adults. It is unclear if arterial stiffness is accelerated in children living with perinatal HIV (CHIV) who initiate ART early in life.
