Expression of integrin αβ in medullary thyroid carcinoma.

Tumor markers often remain elevated after intended curative resection of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). The aim of this study was to determine the expression of αβ, a promising theranostics target, in MTC and its metastases. Aβ expression was analyzed in 104 patients using a tissue microarray and correlated with clinicopathological variables and survival.

Surgical Education.

This paper summarizes the proceedings of the joint European Surgical Association ESA/American Surgical Association symposium on Surgical Education that took place in Bordeaux, France, as part of the celebrations for 30 years of ESA scientific meetings. Three presentations on the use of quantitative metrics to understand technical decisions, coaching during training and beyond, and entrustable professional activities were presented by American Surgical Association members and discussed by ESA members in a symposium attended by members of both associations.

Sentinel lymph node detection in thyroid carcinoma using Ga-tilmanocept PET/CT: a proof-of-concept study protocol.

Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is a diagnostic staging procedure. The procedure aims to identify the first draining lymph node(s), which are most likely to contain metastases. SLNB is applied in various cancers, but not currently in thyroid carcinoma.

Robotic liver resection of segment 7: A step-by-step description of the technique.

Background: Robotic surgery is increasingly employed in complex procedures such as liver resection. Minor resections of the posterosuperior segments might benefit in particular from a robotic approach, since the size of the incision dominates the postoperative recovery rather than the extent of the resection [1]. We aimed to provide a standardized, step-wise guide to robotic liver resection of segment 7.

Hypercalcemia in patients with bipolar disorder treated with lithium: a cross-sectional study.

Background: Lithium-induced hyperparathyroidism (LIH) is a relative underrecognized complication of long-term lithium treatment. Hypercalcemia may be the first, but often overlooked, sign of LIH. Symptoms of LIH can be similar to the underlying psychiatric illness, which may cause a significant doctor's delay in diagnosing LIH.

Primary lymphoma of the liver - A complex diagnosis.

A 59-year-old woman presented with the clinical symptoms and radiologic investigations of a liver lesion suspect of metastasis. However, postoperative histopathology revealed a primary hepatic lymphoma (PHL). The case of a patient with a solitary PHL, which was treated by resection and subsequent chemotherapy, will be discussed with a short overview of the literature.

Combining partial liver resection and local ablation of liver tumours: a preliminary Dutch experience.

Background: The combination of partial liver resection and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a novel concept in the treatment of unresectable liver malignancies. The aim of this study is to evaluate the results of this combined strategy in the Netherlands.

Methods: Thirty-five patients treated with a combination of partial liver resection and RFA were identified from a prospectively registered pooled multicentre database.
