Equol and 5-hydroxy-equol, and their analogous compounds dehydroequol and 5-hydroxy-dehydroequol, are bioactive isoflavones formed by microbial metabolism. The aims of this work were to elucidate the formation of dehydroequol and 5-hydroxy-dehydroequol, to identify the role of dihydrodaidzein reductase (DHDR) in the production of equol, dehydroequol, 5-hydroxy-equol and 5-hydroxy-dehydroequol and to develop soy beverages enriched in these compounds through engineered lactic acid bacteria. DHDR was responsible for the production of equol and dehydroequol from dihydrodaidzein (DHD), and of 5-hydroxy-equol and 5-hydroxy-dehydroequol from dihydrogenistein (DHG), even in the absence of tetrahydrodaidzein reductase (THDR).

The proposed models permit reported and undocumented cases to be estimated, which is important as case counts are overwhelmingly believed to be undercounted. The models can be estimated using only epidemic-type data but are flexible enough to permit these reporting rates to vary across geographical cross-section units of observation.

To achieve these objectives, a standard spatial econometric model used in economics is adapted to resemble the popular reproduction models employed in the epidemiological literature. In addition, we introduce a counterfactual exercise that allows us to examine the Gross domestic product (GDP) gains of bringing forward the date of the Spanish Lockdown.

The bioactivity of lignans and flavonoids depends greatly on bacterial metabolism.

Stilbene synthases (STSs) are the key enzyme responsible for resveratrol biosynthesis. They have been already isolated and characterized from several plant species, however, VviSTS is a multigene family and little is known about their modulation in response to the application of gaseous treatments that maintain table grapes quality during postharvest.

Vitamin B12 serum levels, traditionally used to assess the vitamin B12 status, can be normal under functional deficiency conditions. In this regard, methylmalonic acid (MMA) has proven to be a more specific marker to detect subclinical vitamin B12 deficiency.

However, daily intake of antioxidants in Western diets is decreasing. This study evaluates the effect of daily consumption of an antioxidant-rich juice (ARJ) on oxidative status, cardiovascular disease risk parameters, and untargeted plasma and urine metabolomes.

Methods: 75 women with FM were allocated to a low-moderate intensity 3-month (three times/week) multidisciplinary (pool, land-based and psychological sessions) programme (n=33) or to a usual care group (n=32). The outcome variables were pain threshold, body composition (body mass index and estimated body fat percentage) and physical fitness (30 s chair stand, handgrip strength, chair sit and reach, back scratch, blind flamingo, 8 feet up and go and 6 min walk test).
The effect of dietary vitamin E supplementation on modified-atmosphere packed lamb meat during storage was studied. Thirty-six weaned male Manchego breed lambs were fed diets supplemented with three different vitamin E concentrations (0, 250, 500 and 1000mg/kg feed) for an average of 37 days, in the 13-26kg live weight growth range. Slices of m.

Introduction: The posterior border of the mandibular ramus can be used as a pedicled graft for reconstruction of the condyle. This article describes a technique that is better in certain situations than the use of other autogenous grafts or alloplastic materials.
Patients And Methods: Three adult patients, two with osteochondroma and one with hyperplasia were treated by condylectomy and simultaneous reconstruction with the pedicled posterior mandibular border.

Ninety-one young varietal wines from the Valencian community (Spain), made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Monastrell, and Bobal grapes, were tested on the basis of 33 variables: 9 conventional parameters, 10 alcohols and polyols, and 14 esters. Discriminant analysis was used to identify and explain the differences among samples, as well as to determine whether it is possible or not to differentiate among varieties. This differentiation (100% of the samples) has been possible due to the new discriminant analysis based on only 11 main variables: total acidity, cis-3-hexenol, methanol, glycerol, 2,3-butanediol, isobutyric alcohol, 1-pentanol, acetaldehyde, ethyl propionate, ethyl decanoato, and gamma-butyrolactone, which allow differentiating 100% of the 1994 vintage and 97% of the 1995 vintage.
