Bolus segmentation is crucial for the automated detection of swallowing disorders in videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSS). However, it is difficult for the model to accurately segment a bolus region in a VFSS image because VFSS images are translucent, have low contrast and unclear region boundaries, and lack color information. We propose a novel transfer learning framework for pathological image analysis, the Response-based Cross-task Knowledge Distillation (RCKD), which improves the performance of the model by pretraining it on a large unlabeled dataset guided by a high-performance teacher model. RCKD first pretrains a student model to predict the nuclei segmentation results of the teacher model for unlabeled pathological images, and then fine-tunes the pretrained model for the downstream tasks, such as organ cancer sub-type classification and cancer region segmentation, using relatively small target datasets. Unlike conventional knowledge distillation, RCKD does not require that the target tasks of the teacher and student models be the same.

There are various methods for treating advanced hepatocellular carcinoma with portal vein invasion, such as systemic chemotherapy, transarterial chemoembolization, transarterial radioembolization, and concurrent chemoradiotherapy. High throughput screening of citrus samples containing elevated concentrations of total carotenoids, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds was accomplished using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, combined with multivariate analysis. Principal component analysis and partial least squares discriminant analysis using FT-IR spectra were able to differentiate seven citrus fruit groups into three distinct clusters corresponding to their taxonomic relationship. Quantitative prediction modeling of total carotenoids, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds in citrus fruit was established using a partial least squares regression algorithm from the FT-IR spectra.

A novel disposable all-printed electronic biosensor is proposed for a fast detection and classification of bacteria. This biosensor is applied to classify three types of popular pathogens: Salmonella typhimurium, and the Escherichia coli strains JM109 and DH5-α. During the hair follicle (HF) cycle, HR protein expression is not concordant with the presence of the Hr mRNA transcript, suggesting an elaborate regulation of Hr gene expression. Here we present evidence that the 5' untranslated region (UTR) of the Hr gene has internal ribosome entry site (IRES) activity and this activity is regulated by the binding of poly (rC) binding protein 2 (PCBP2) to Hr mRNA. Overexpression and knockdown of PCBP2 resulted in a decrease in Hr 5' UTR IRES activity and an increase in HR protein expression without changing mRNA levels.
