Laparoscopic ovariectomy under general anesthesia was planned in a 10-year-old, 146 kg, apparently healthy female African lion (Panthera leo). The lion was immobilized via intramuscular darts containing midazolam (0.033 mg/kg), medetomidine (50 µg/kg) and ketamine (2.

Objective: To evaluate whether the administration of 2% dorzolamide ophthalmic solution in dogs undergoing ophthalmic surgery is associated with perianesthetic metabolic acidosis.

Animals: 60 dogs, with or without dorzolamide administration, underwent arterial blood gas analysis immediately after anesthesia for ophthalmic surgery between 2019 and 2022; a total of 60 surgeries were evaluated.

Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study.

Background: The incidence of colic and the outcomes of colic surgery have not been surveyed in racetracks in Korea.

Objectives: This study examined the incidence, mortality, and case fatality of colic and investigated the effects of age and sex after an exploratory celiotomy on the long-term survival rate (return to racing), subsequent racing performance, and career longevity.

Methods: The incidence, mortality, and case fatalities of colic were examined over an 11-year period.

Objective: To compare the epidural anesthesia device (EPIA), which facilitates an automatic approach to location of the epidural space, with the performance of clinicians using tactile sensation and differences in pressure when inserting an epidural needle into the epidural space of a dog.

Study Design: Prospective, crossover experiment.

Animals: A total of 14 Beagle dogs weighing 7.

This study aimed to evaluate the agreement between oscillometric blood pressure (OBP) measured from the tongue and invasive blood pressure (IBP) measured from the dorsal pedal artery in anesthetized dogs of various body weights. Forty-five client-owned dogs undergoing general anesthesia for surgery or imaging scan were included; weights ranged from 2.5 to 42.

Background: Arterial access in small-breed dogs is challenging, but arterial visualisation may facilitate the procedure, as evidenced in human medicine. This prospective, randomised study investigated the result of using transillumination to guide coccygeal artery cannulation in small-breed dogs.

Methods: Coccygeal artery cannulation was attempted in dogs anaesthetised with butorphanol, midazolam, propofol and sevoflurane.

Objectives: To compare the duration of regional anesthesia of the pelvic limb using bupivacaine with and without a temperature-responsive hydrogel (TRH) in dogs.

Methods: Under anesthesia using medetomidine (10 μg·kg ), alfaxalone (2 mg·kg ), and isoflurane, seven healthy male Beagles received four injections of 0.5% bupivacaine (1 mg·kg with 5 μg·ml epinephrine) to block the femoral and sciatic nerves bilaterally via ultrasound with nerve stimulation guidance.

This study aimed to compare the effect of ethmoidal-maxillary nerve block (EMBLOCK) and topical application of 2% lidocaine gel (LGEL) on cardiovascular variables (heart rate and arterial blood pressure) during mechanical stimulation of the nasal cavity. The working hypothesis was that both techniques (EMBLOCK and LGEL) similarly blunt the cardiovascular responses to the stimulation. Six beagles were anesthetized using alfaxalone and isoflurane on three occasions with each treatment (EMBLOCK, LGEL, and control) in random order.

Background: Since 2013, the number of requests for diagnosis for horses based on neurological symptoms has increased rapidly in South Korea. The affected horses have commonly exhibited symptoms of acute seasonal hindlimb ataxia. A previous study from 2015-2016 identified as the causative agent.

is a representative fungal species in the section Flavi and has been used as a model system to gain insights into fungal development and toxin production. has several adverse effects on humans, including the production of the most carcinogenic mycotoxin aflatoxins and causing aspergillosis in immune-compromised patients. In addition, infection of crops results in economic losses due to yield loss and aflatoxin contamination.

Background: Studies on anesthetized dogs regarding pulse pressure variation (PPV) are increasing. The influence of respiratory rate (RR) on PPV, in mechanically ventilated dogs, has not been clearly identified.

Objectives: This study evaluated the influence of RR on PPV in mechanically ventilated healthy dogs after hemorrhage.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT) in measuring tracheal diameter as a preliminary step for selecting endotracheal tubes in dogs.
  • It involved nine Beagle dogs, measuring tracheal diameters at two specific locations using both imaging methods, where measurements with CT were taken under anesthesia and with ultrasonography while dogs were unsedated.
  • Results indicated that while ultrasonography showed a slight underestimation of tracheal diameter compared to CT, it still demonstrated potential for accurate measurements, suggesting further research could support its clinical use for endotracheal tube selection.

A 6-month-old, 2.9-kg, male, Korean short hair cat was referred for inadequate mouth opening (4 mm), and condylectomy was scheduled for ankylosis of the left temporomandibular joint. Retrograde intubation via the cricothyroid membrane was planned since direct visualisation of the larynx was not possible.

Case Description: 5 dogs with a history of ventriculocordectomy were anesthetized with isoflurane for ovariohysterectomy, dental prophylaxis, or intracapsular lens extraction.

Clinical Findings: No remarkable, abnormal clinical signs such as exercise intolerance, respiratory distress, or stridor were found in 4 dogs. However, 1 dog had cough after drinking, which had started after the ventriculocordectomy.

Background: Gastric ulcer is one of the prevalent diseases in racehorses. However, it has not been recognized as important in Korea, and drugs used to treat gastric ulcers are included in the doping test list, so they are not allowed to be administered to racehorses in training.

Objectives: This study was performed 1) to investigate the prevalence and the severity of gastric ulcers in Thoroughbred racehorses in Korea, 2) to confirm the therapeutic effect of ranitidine and omeprazole, and 3) to compare the efficacy between ranitidine and omeprazole.

Equine parvovirus-hepatitis (EqPV-H) causes equine hepatitis. The prevalence of EqPV-H in healthy horses has been reported in the United States, China, Germany, and Austria. The present study determined the prevalence of EqPV-H in the sera of clinically healthy horses in South Korea to identify the potential factors for infection and examine the genetic diversity of EqPV-H DNA sequences through comparison with foreign strains.

Unlabelled: Recent studies have shown that γ-glutamyl peptides (GGPs) are recognized by the calcium-sensing receptor and induce kokumi taste. The contents of GGP have been reported in some fermented foods such as cheese and Japanese soy sauce but not in and which are representative Korean fermented-soybean products. In this study, the qualitative and quantitative analyses of GGPs in several and were carried out by LC-MS/MS using 11 synthetic GGPs as reference compounds.
