Autistic Traits, Emotion Regulation, Social Anxiety, Drinking to Cope, and Problematic Alcohol Use: A Cross-Cultural Examination Among Young Adults from Seven Countries.

Background: Prior research suggests that individuals reporting autistic traits are at heightened risk for alcohol dependence once they begin drinking; thus, examining factors that may lead to problematic drinking in this population is imperative. Neurotypical college students higher in autistic traits tend to have more social anxiety, more challenges with social skills and communication, and weaker social adjustment than those lower in autistic traits, which are risk factors for problematic alcohol use.

Objectives: The present study sought to assess whether university students with more autistic traits would report greater alcohol-related negative consequences, and whether this association would be indirectly influenced by social anxiety, emotion regulation, and drinking to cope.

Surgical Management of Pediatric Glaucoma.

Pediatric glaucoma surgery is challenging because of the differences in anatomy from the adult, differences in the behavior of the tissues of a child's glaucomatous eye, the variety in causes of the disease, and difficulties with postoperative management. Goniotomy and trabeculotomy are the preferred initial treatments for primary congenital glaucoma. Trabeculectomy with adjunctive mitomycin C is more likely to succeed in older, phakic patients, but carries the long-term risk of bleb-associated endophthalmitis.

Combined Ahmed Glaucoma Valve Placement, Intravitreal Fluocinolone Acetonide Implantation and Cataract Extraction for Chronic Uveitis.

Purpose: To report the outcomes of combined Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) placement, intravitreal fluocinolone acetonide implant, and cataract extraction procedure in the treatment of chronic noninfectious uveitis.

Patients And Methods: Retrospective case series of patients with chronic noninfectious uveitis who underwent AGV placement, intravitreal fluocinolone acetonide implantation, and cataract extraction in a single surgical session performed at 1 institution from January 2009 to November 2014. Outcome measures included intraocular pressure (IOP) and glaucoma medication use.

An Incidental Finding of Choroidal Ganglioneuronal Hamartoma in a Patient With Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

A 42-year-old man with neurofibromatosis type 1 underwent a giant facial neurofibroma resection and enucleation of the right eye. He was found to have a diffusely thickened and cellular choroid containing individual or small clusters of large ganglion and medium-sized neuronal cells. The nomenclature of this lesion is difficult; however, the term choroidal ganglioneuronal hamartoma has been favored due to the lack of proliferative activity and diffuse nature of the lesion arguing against a neoplastic etiology.

Ferric citrate controls phosphorus and delivers iron in patients on dialysis.

Patients on dialysis require phosphorus binders to prevent hyperphosphatemia and are iron deficient. We studied ferric citrate as a phosphorus binder and iron source. In this sequential, randomized trial, 441 subjects on dialysis were randomized to ferric citrate or active control in a 52-week active control period followed by a 4-week placebo control period, in which subjects on ferric citrate who completed the active control period were rerandomized to ferric citrate or placebo.

Dose-response and efficacy of ferric citrate to treat hyperphosphatemia in hemodialysis patients: a short-term randomized trial.

Background: Most dialysis patients require phosphate binders to control hyperphosphatemia. Ferric citrate has been tested in phase 2 trials as a phosphate binder. This trial was designed as a dose-response and efficacy trial.

CSF-1 signaling mediates recovery from acute kidney injury.

Renal tubule epithelia represent the primary site of damage in acute kidney injury (AKI), a process initiated and propagated by the infiltration of macrophages. Here we investigated the role of resident renal macrophages and dendritic cells in recovery from AKI after ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury or a novel diphtheria toxin-induced (DT-induced) model of selective proximal tubule injury in mice. DT-induced AKI was characterized by marked renal proximal tubular cell apoptosis.
