Purpose: We tested whether blinatumomab (Blina) is effective as a toxicity-sparing alternative to first-line intensive chemotherapy in children and young persons (CYP) with B-ALL who were chemotherapy-intolerant or chemotherapy-resistant.

Methods: Data were collected for consecutive CYP (age 1-24 years) with Philadelphia chromosome-positive or Philadelphia chromosome-negative B-ALL who received Blina as first-line therapy. Blina was given as replacement for postremission intensive chemotherapy to patients with chemotherapy intolerance or resistance.

We report the case of a school-aged boy who presented with clinical features suggesting acute appendicitis. However, further imaging which included CT, demonstrated an inflammatory mass involving the transverse colon raising the suspicion of lymphoma. He then developed intestinal obstruction, and in view of the rapid progression of the disease, he was thought to have non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (ADRDs) affect 6 million Americans, and they are projected to have an estimated health care cost of $355 billion for 2021. A histopathological hallmark of AD and many ADRDs is the aberrant intracellular accumulation of the microtubule-associated protein tau. These neurodegenerative disorders that contain tau aggregates are collectively known as tauopathies, and recent structural studies have shown that different tauopathies are characterized by different "strains" of tau filaments.

Bioethanol has been considered as a more sustainable alternative for fossil fuels, and it has been used as a drop-in fuel mixture. In this paper, the autoxidation properties of real kerosene as well as single, binary and ternary surrogates with the presence of ethanol are investigated for the first time. A simplified python code is proposed to predict the pressure drop of the PetroOXY method that was used for assessing the fuel autoxidation properties.

The microtubule-associated protein tau promotes the stabilization of the axonal cytoskeleton in neurons. In several neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, tau has been found to dissociate from microtubules, leading to the formation of pathological aggregates that display an amyloid fibril-like structure. Recent structural studies have shown that the tau filaments isolated from different neurodegenerative disorders have structurally distinct fibril cores that are specific to the disease.

Biochemical reactions occurring during anaerobic digestion have been modelled using reaction kinetic equations such as first-order, Contois and Monod which are then combined to form mechanistic models. This work considers models which include between one and three biochemical reactions to investigate if the choice of the reaction rate equation, complexity of the model structure as well as the inclusion of inhibition plays a key role in the ability of the model to describe the methane production from the semi-continuous anaerobic digestion of green waste (GW) and food waste (FW). A parameter estimation method was used to investigate the most important phenomena influencing the biogas production process.

This paper presents numerical calculations of the temperature field obtained for the case of a neonate placed under a radiant warmer. The results of the simulations show a very non-uniform temperature distribution on the skin of the neonate, which may cause increased evaporation leading to severe dehydration. For this reason, we propose some modifications on the geometry and operation of the radiant warmer, in order to make the temperature distribution more uniform and prevent the high temperature gradients observed on the surface of the neonate.

Heterozygous mutations in DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes result in predisposition to colorectal cancer (hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer or Lynch syndrome). Patients with biallelic mutations in these genes, however, present earlier, with constitutional mismatch repair deficiency cancer syndrome (CMMRD), which is characterized by a spectrum of rare childhood malignancies and café-au-lait skin patches. The hallmark of MMR deficiency, microsatellite instability (MSI), is readily detectable in tumor DNA in Lynch syndrome, but is also present in constitutional DNA of CMMRD patients.

This paper reviews some of our recent applications of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model heat and mass transfer problems in neonatology and investigates the major heat and mass-transfer mechanisms taking place in medical devices, such as incubators, radiant warmers and oxygen hoods. It is shown that CFD simulations are very flexible tools that can take into account all modes of heat transfer in assisting neonatal care and improving the design of medical devices.

The main objectives of this paper are to present a procedure of how to create and set up a model for the physical processes that take place within an infant radiant warmer and to validate that Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) can be used to resolve such problems. In this study, the results are obtained for a simplified model, both in terms of the geometry employed and the prescribed boundary conditions. Two approaches were explored: a numerical solution assuming turbulent flow and an analytical solution assuming potential flow. Theoretical and computational fluid dynamical techniques are employed to predict the two-dimensional turbulent air flows which are created by an Aaberg slot exhaust hood, which is reinforced by a two-dimensional wall jet flow. The aim of the two-dimensional model is to numerically reveal the characteristics of the air flow in the central plane of the Aaberg workbench.
