Objectives: To analyze in solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas (SPNP) the consequences of the deregulated Wnt pathway by studying the expression of Wnt target glutamine synthetase (GLUL), cyclin D1, and E-cadherin, which is one of the beta-catenin binding partner in cell adhesion.
Methods: The expression of cyclin D1 and GLUL was studied at the protein and/or messenger RNA levels, and the immunolocalization for E-cadherin was analyzed in 28 SPNPs screened for beta-catenin mutations. Expression of cyclin D1, GLUL, and beta-catenin was also assessed in pancreatic endocrine tumors as controls.
Background: Despite the high survival rates reported for screening-detected cases, the potential of screening of high-risk subjects for reducing lung cancer mortality is still unproven. We herewith present the baseline results of a randomized trial comparing screening for lung cancer with annual spiral computed tomography (CT) versus a yearly clinical review.
Methods: Male subjects, 60-74 years old, and smokers of 20+ pack-years were enrolled.
Objective: To investigate the specificity of the association between internalizing disorders (anxiety and depression) and atopic disorders (asthma, allergic rhinitis, urticaria, and atopic dermatitis) in a child and adolescent psychiatric clinical sample.
Method: A sample of 184 youths was evaluated for current DSM-IV psychiatric disorders (clinical interview) and lifetime history of atopic disorders (parent report and chart review) in a child and adolescent psychiatry clinic from September 1, 2001, through December 31, 2002. Logistic regression analyses were used to assess the differential likelihood of having a lifetime history of atopic disorders among psychiatrically ill youths with and without internalizing disorders.
Background: Pectus excavatum is the most frequent malformation of the rib cage. Functional aspects associated with this malformation often are absent even in adults not involved in competitive sports activities. Overall, these patients often live with extreme psychological discomfort when the malformations are minor.

SAXS and NMR spectroscopy indicate that the single-chain homologue forms spheroidal aggregates, whereas the gemini surfactants form cylindrical micelles. The main parameters characterizing the micellar shape, i.

This paper describes a methodology for organizing the supply of medical materials in public hospitals, based on an action-research approach. Interventions were based on the assumption that a significant portion of problems in Brazil's National Health System (SUS) facilities derive from the fact that their clinical and administrative departments do not see themselves as belonging to the same production chain - neither the hospital nor the supply department is aware of what the other produces.

A wide variety of experimental conditions were addressed by changing the amount of polymer and of surfactant.

HA by capillary array electrophoresis (HA-CAE) was developed to increase throughput and allow the scanning of large multiexon genes in multicapillary DNA sequencers. HA-CAE is a straightforward and high-throughput technique to detect both known and novel DNA variants with a high level of sensitivity and specificity.

The red blood cell is one of the most used cellular membrane models to study the mechanisms underlying surfactant-induced osmotic cell resistance. To increase our knowledge regarding the mechanisms of surfactant membrane interaction, we studied the action of five lysine-derivative anionic and three arginine-derivative cationic amino acid-based surfactants on hypotonic hemolysis.

These compounds have been screened for antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Their activity was compared.

Anisotropy measurements demonstrated that almost all of the surfactants studied disturbed the external region of the erythrocyte membrane without affecting the core of the bilayer. How the physico-chemical properties and structure of these compounds affect dynamics of the lipid bilayer is discussed in detail.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLysine derivative surfactants are a class of amino acid-based surfactants synthesized as lecithin analogues that deserve particular attention because of their low toxicity and high biocompatibility. To complete the toxicological profile of these surfactants, IL-1 alpha production (cell-associated and release to the culture medium) was determined as an in vitro method for predicting skin irritation. In addition, an MTT assay was used as a viability marker in keratinocytes NCTC 2544.

The new structures consist of two N(alpha)-phenylacetyl-L-arginine moieties connected by an alkanediamine spacer chain of 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 methylene units through amide bonds. The key step in the chemoenzymatic strategy is the double aminolysis of the N(alpha)-phenylacetyl-L-arginine methyl ester by the corresponding alpha,omega-alkanediamine catalyzed by papain in ethanolic media.

Surfactants with Tris and Lithium had less of a toxic effect on Daphnia, while all surfactants proved highly active against yeasts and the gram-negative bacteria Bordetella bronchiseptica. Counterion size was found to have no effect on aquatic toxicity or antimicrobial activity.

Methods: To this end, we compared its effects against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli with those caused by the commercial and widely known antiseptic, chlorhexidine dihydrochloride (CHX).
Results: Both disrupted the cell membrane of the target bacteria to cause potassium leakage and morphological damage.
Aim: We reviewed our ten-year experience with surgical en-bloc chest wall and vertebral resection for sarcoma invading the spine, and verified five-year survival and feasibility of this aggressive surgery.
Methods: From 1994 to 1999, 13 patients underwent surgical en-bloc resection for primary sarcoma of the chest wall involving the spine. Concurrent pulmonary resection was performed in 12 cases.
Surfactants represent one of the most common constituents in topical pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications or cleansers. Since adverse skin and ocular reactions can be caused by them, it is important to evaluate damaging effects. Amino acid-based surfactants deserve particular attention because of their low toxicity and environmental friendly properties.
