Fine particulate matter (PM), an atmospheric pollutant that settles deep in the respiratory tract, is highly harmful to human health. Despite its well-known impact on lung function and its ability to exacerbate asthma, the molecular basis of this effect is not fully understood. This integrated transcriptomic and epigenomic data analysis from publicly available datasets aimed to determine the impact of PM exposure and its association with asthma in human airway epithelial cells.

Background: Skeletal fragility is characterized by increased frequency of vertebral fractures (VFs) in acromegaly. Several trials were conducted to identify modifiable risk factors and predictors of VFs, with limited data on the prognostic role of GH receptor (GHR) isoforms. In this study, we investigated the potential role of GHR polymorphism on the occurrence of incidental VFs (i-VFs), in patients treated with second-line medical therapies.

Background: Overdose deaths continue to rise within the United States, despite effective treatments such as buprenorphine and methadone for opioid use disorder (OUD). Mobile medical units with the ability to dispense buprenorphine have been developed to engage patients and eliminate barriers to accessing OUD treatment. This study reports survey responses of patients of a mobile medical unit dispensing buprenorphine in areas of Chicago, IL with high overdose rates.

Background: Acromegaly is associated with skeletal fragility and increased prevalence of vertebral fractures (VF). Two isoforms of GH receptor (GHR) have been described, which differ in the presence or absence of a transcript of exon 3 of the GHR gene. Both isoforms produce a functional receptor, but the exon 3-deleted isoforms (d3-GHR) have greater sensitivity to endogenous and recombinant GH than the full-length isoform (fl-GHR).

Although B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-cell ALL) survival rates have improved in recent years, Hispanic children continue to have poorer survival rates. There are few tools available to identify at the time of diagnosis whether the patient will respond to induction therapy. Our goal was to identify predictive biomarkers of treatment response, which could also serve as prognostic biomarkers of death, by identifying methylated and differentially expressed genes between patients with positive minimal residual disease (MRD+) and negative minimal residual disease (MRD-).

Qualitative alterations in type I collagen due to pathogenic variants in the COL1A1 or COL1A2 genes, result in moderate and severe Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), a rare disease characterized by bone fragility. The TGF-β signaling pathway is overactive in OI patients and certain OI mouse models, and inhibition of TGF-β through anti-TGF-β monoclonal antibody therapy in phase I clinical trials in OI adults is rendering encouraging results. However, the impact of TGF-β inhibition on osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells from OI patients (OI-MSCs) is unknown.

Introduction: Skeletal fragility is a clinically relevant and not-reversible complication of acromegaly, involving around 30-40% of patients since the disease diagnosis. Few studies have investigated the effects on skeletal health of medical therapies for acromegaly. In this retrospective longitudinal monocentre study, we investigated the outcome of skeletal fragility in patients treated with Pasireotide Lar in combination with Pegvisomant (Pasi-Lar + Peg-V), also comparing those observed in patients treated with conventional therapies.

Unlabelled: Few data are available on the lung microbiota composition of patients with coronavirus disease 2019-related acute respiratory distress syndrome (C-ARDS) receiving invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). Moreover, it has never been investigated whether there is a potential correlation between lung microbiota communities and respiratory mechanics. We performed a prospective observational study in two intensive care units of a university hospital in Italy.

Objective: To identify specific eating behavior pathways that mediate associations between financial difficulties, negative life events, and maternal depressive symptoms from 0 to 5 years and cardiometabolic risk in adolescence.

Method: Hypotheses were tested with data from birth to age 15 years using the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, a birth cohort in the United Kingdom ( = 3,887 for current analyses). Mothers reported on financial difficulties, negative life events, and maternal depressive symptoms at multiple points from 0 to 5 years and reported on worry about child overeating at 8 years.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic seemed to mainly involve the respiratory system, but it was realized that it could affect any organ, including the CNS. The pandemic has followed a wave-like trend, with its peaks being due to the COVID-19 different variants and the introduction of the vaccine, which led to an apparent reduction in hospitalizations but also brought about perplexities related to its adverse effects. The aim of this study was to analyze the changes in the use of head CT/contrast CT and their impacts on the onset of cerebrovascular disease in our emergency department during the COVID-19 period and the vaccine rollout.

Purpose: Regorafenib is a multikinase inhibitor, approved as a preferred regimen for recurrent glioblastoma (rGB). Although its effects on prolonging survival could seem modest, it is still unclear whether a subset of patients, potentially identifiable by imaging biomarkers, might experience a more substantial positive effect. Our aim was to evaluate the potential value of magnetic resonance imaging-derived parameters as non-invasive biomarkers to predict response to regorafenib in patients with rGB.

Elevated inflammatory markers are associated with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and some patients benefit from Interleukin (IL)-6 pathway inhibitors. Different chest computed tomography (CT) scoring systems have shown a prognostic value in COVID-19, but not specifically in anti-IL-6-treated patients at high risk of respiratory failure. We aimed to explore the relationship between baseline CT findings and inflammatory conditions and to evaluate the prognostic value of chest CT scores and laboratory findings in COVID-19 patients specifically treated with anti-IL-6.
