We report a case of a 34-year-old male with severe multisystemic involvement (including the testis, musculoskeletal system, skin, upper respiratory tract, ocular system, peripheral nerves, abdomen, and kidney) due to granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) and a high proteinase 3 (PR3)-antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (PR3ANCA) titer. A renal biopsy showed pauci-immune glomerulonephritis (GN). Systemic corticotherapy combined with cyclophosphamide was chosen for induction therapy.

Introduction And Objective: Several scoring systems have been developed for risk stratification in patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE). The Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index (PESI) and its simplified version (sPESI) are among the most used, however the high number of variables hinder its application. Our aim was to derive an easy-to-perform score based on simple parameters obtained at admission to predict 30-day mortality in acute PE patients.

At the end of 2019, the coronavirus appeared and spread extremely rapidly, causing millions of infections and deaths worldwide, and becoming a global pandemic. For this reason, it became urgent and essential to find adequate tests for an accurate and fast diagnosis of this disease. In the present study, a systematic review was performed in order to provide an overview of the COVID-19 diagnosis methods and tests already available, as well as their evolution in recent months.

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is an elastomer with excellent optical, electrical and mechanical properties, which makes it well-suited for several engineering applications. Due to its biocompatibility, PDMS is widely used for biomedical purposes. This widespread use has also led to the massification of the soft-lithography technique, introduced for facilitating the rapid prototyping of micro and nanostructures using elastomeric materials, most notably PDMS.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how genetic variation influences adaptive traits, focusing on the winter coat colors of least weasels (Mustela nivalis) that adapt for camouflage in different snowy environments.
  • Researchers used whole-genome sequencing to analyze samples from two regions in Europe where the weasels show distinct white and brown winter coat morphs.
  • An association was found between coat color and the MC1R pigmentation gene, with a specific amino acid change linked to the brown morph, indicating that single gene changes can significantly impact seasonal camouflage.

Article Synopsis
  • Many species of mammals and birds adapt to seasonal changes by altering their fur or feather color, with some maintaining nonwhite winter morphs suited to less snowy environments.
  • An introduction of mountain hares to the Faroe Islands in 1855 resulted in a rapid shift from winter-white to winter-gray coat color due to selective pressures, providing insight into the genetics behind this trait.
  • Genomic analysis revealed that the winter-gray coloration is linked to introgression from a noncolor changing species and highlights the role of regulatory changes and positive selection in this adaptation.

Interfaces between two immiscible electrolyte solutions are recognized as a simplified model for biological systems and they can be of great relevance to the characterization of biomolecules and their role in biological systems. In this work, ion transfer and facilitated ion transfer of protonated catecholamines (dopamine and noradrenaline) by dibenzo-18-crown-6 are investigated at the water/1,6-dichlorohexane interface. The formation constant of the complex between both dopamine and noradrenaline with dibenzo-18-crown-6 was evaluated and the experimental conditions for the analytical determination of those catecholamines are established.
