In the context of cystic lesions of the pancreas and their paucisymptomatic symptoms, we present the case of a 33-year-old woman with epigastric pain and nonspecific abdominal discomfort. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging were performed, with the finding of a lesion at the level of the head-uncinate process of the pancreas, compatible with a solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas. The procedure was performed with a cephalic pancreaticoduodenectomy of Whipple, without incident.

Iatrogenic bile duct injury is a rare complication, although feared due to its morbidity and mortality. In urgent surgeries, its incidence can be doubled, so in selected cases we must assess the use of resources such as indocyanine green to minimize the risk of biliary or arterial lesions by allowing the correct identification of the structures. We present the case of a 57-year-old patient with acute cholecystitis who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

In this work, we present a microfluidic amperometric immunosensor for cancer biomarker claudin7 (CLD7) determination in circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs) as well as its validation in colorectal cancer (CC) patients. The device is based on synthetized nanosized MIL-125-NH particles, covalently anchored to the central channel of the microfluidic immunosensor. This nanomaterial was employed as efficient platform for anti-CLD7 monoclonal antibodies immobilization for specifically recognize and capture CLD7 in EVs samples.

Liver involvement after abdominal blunt trauma must be expected, and in up to 30% of cases, spleen, kidney, and pancreas injuries may coexist. Whenever hemodynamics conditions do not contraindicate the overcoming of the ancient dogma according to which exploratory laparotomy should be performed after every major abdominal trauma, a CT scan has to clarify the liver lesions so as to determine the optimal management strategy. Except for complete vascular avulsion, no liver trauma grade precludes nonoperative management.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute emphysematous cholecystitis is a rare form of acute cholecystitis, occurring in about 1% of cases, marked by gas presence in the gallbladder or surrounding areas.
  • It is linked to underlying conditions like arteriosclerosis, embolic events, and diabetes mellitus.
  • Common bacteria associated with this condition include Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus, along with other bacteria like Proteus vulgaris and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The intention of this work is to present a recent case treated in our center. A 77-year-old woman who underwent a laparoscopic subtotal gastrectomy due to the suspicion of a GIST tumor (gastrointestinal stromal tumor), in which the anatomy study the definitive pathology showed the finding of gastric Shawnnoma.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare neoplasm of mesenchymal origin that normally appears in the pleura; however, it has been described in other extrapleural locations. This tumor is rarely malignant and only a few cases of metastatic SFT have been described.

The isolation of circulating tumour cells (CTCs) in colorectal cancer (CRC) mostly relies on the expression of epithelial markers such as EpCAM, and phenotypic characterisation is usually performed under fluorescence microscopy with only one or two additional markers. This limits the ability to detect different CTC subpopulations based on multiple markers. The aim of this work was to develop a novel protocol combining two platforms (IsoFlux and ImageStream) to improve CTC evaluation.

Being minimally invasive and thus allowing repeated measures over time, liquid biopsies are taking over traditional solid biopsies in certain circumstances such as those for unreachable tumors, very early stages or treatment monitoring. However, regarding mutation status analysis, liquid biopsies have not yet substituted tissue samples, mainly due to the lack of concordance between the two types of biopsies. This needs to be examined in a study-dependent manner, taking into account the particular type of liquid biopsy analyzed, that is, circulating tumor cells (CTCs) or cell-free DNA (cfDNA), its involvement in the tumor biology and evolution and, finally, the technology used to analyze each biopsy type.

Article Synopsis
  • A 48-year-old patient experiences chronic abdominal pain linked to a rare mesenteric tumor of neurogenic origin, known as a schwannoma.
  • Intra-abdominal schwannomas are rare and often present with few symptoms, sometimes being discovered incidentally.
  • Surgical excision is the preferred treatment method, as it offers the best chance for complete recovery.
