As an alternative, we tested the performance of HFO amplitude as a potential SOZ biomarker using two automated detection algorithms.

Cigarette smoking causes emphysema, a fatal disease involving extensive structural and functional damage of the lung. Using a guinea pig model and human lung cells, we show that oxidant(s) present in tobacco smoke not only cause direct oxidative damage of lung proteins, contributing to the major share of lung injury, but also activate Rtp801, a key proinflammatory cellular factor involved in tobacco smoke-induced lung damage. Rtp801 triggers nuclear factor κB and consequent inducible NOS (iNOS)-mediated overproduction of NO, which in combination with excess superoxide produced during Rtp801 activation, contribute to increased oxido-nitrosative stress and lung protein nitration.

The risk of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is highest with nocturnal, unattended generalized convulsions, and basic resuscitation may be able to prevent SUDEP. This study investigates an under-mattress device (ElectroMechanical Film - Emfit®) which is triggered by rhythmic motor activity of a specifiable duration, frequency, and intensity using a quasi-piezoelectric material sensitive to changes in mattress pressure. We describe the case of a 74-year-old man with left parietal arteriovenous malformation (AVM) and cerebral white matter radiation necrosis who developed persistent subjective right-sided groin pulsations. The EEG revealed left parietal periodic lateralized epileptiform discharges (PLEDs) time-locked to these sensations, confirming that the patient's symptoms represented sensory seizures with ictal PLEDs as the electrographic correlate. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of ictal PLEDs manifesting as sensory seizures.
