Background: Recently, several devices exploiting the near-infrared autofluorescence (NIR-AF) of parathyroid glands (PGs) have been developed. Nevertheless, their impact on both preserving PGs from inadvertent surgical dissection and on post-surgical hypoparathyroidism (hypoPTH) is controversial.

Methods: A retrospective study of 845 patients undergoing thyroid surgery in 2 academic tertiary centres was conducted.

This study investigates the use of near-infrared fluorescence imaging (NIFI) as an alternative to intraoperative parathyroid hormone (ioPTH) measurement in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP) due to parathyroid adenoma (PA) with two preoperative imaging examinations in agreement on the position of the altered parathyroid gland. Fifty patients who underwent minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP) from March 2021 to April 2024 were enrolled. MIPs utilised both NIFI and ioPTH, comparing the time to adenoma excision with NIFI against the total surgical time, including ioPTH measurement wait time.

Article Synopsis
  • * Experiments on highly charged ions, particularly uranium, are complicated but critical for studying the effects of strong electromagnetic fields on QED calculations, which behave differently under these conditions.
  • * The research presented achieved precise measurements of electron interactions in uranium ions, allowing for tests of both individual electron effects and interactions between multiple electrons, contributing valuable data for theoretical models in strong-field QED.

Highly charged ions (HCIs) offer many opportunities for next-generation clock research due to the vast landscape of available electronic transitions in different charge states. The development of extreme ultraviolet frequency combs has enabled the search for clock transitions based on shorter wavelengths in HCIs. However, without initial knowledge of the energy of the clock states, these narrow transitions are difficult to be probed by lasers.

To test bound-state quantum electrodynamics (BSQED) in the strong-field regime, we have performed high precision x-ray spectroscopy of the 5g-4f and 5f- 4d transitions (BSQED contribution of 2.4 and 5.2 eV, respectively) of muonic neon atoms in the low-pressure gas phase without bound electrons.

Kα,β X-ray lines from photon excitation were measured in selected elements from Mg to Cu using a high-resolution double-crystal X-ray spectrometer with a proportional counter, and the Kβ/Kα intensity ratio for each element was obtained, after correcting for self-absorption, detection efficiency, and crystal reflectance. This intensity ratio increases rapidly from Mg to Ca but, in the 3d elements region, the increase becomes slower. This is related to the intensity of the Kβ line involving valence electrons.

Muonic atom spectroscopy-the measurement of the x rays emitted during the formation process of a muonic atom-has a long standing history in probing the shape and size of nuclei. In fact, almost all stable elements have been subject to muonic atom spectroscopy measurements and the absolute charge radii extracted from these measurements typically offer the highest accuracy available. However, so far only targets of at least a few hundred milligram could be used as it required to stop a muon beam directly in the target to form the muonic atom.

Purpose: Near-infrared autofluorescence is a new technology in thyroid surgery to better localize and preserve parathyroid glands. The purpose of this study is to assess if the adoption of NIR-AF can improve in short-, medium-, and long-term post-operative calcium and PTH levels compared to conventional "naked eye" surgery in patients undergoing TT for benign or malignant conditions.

Methods: 134 patients undergone total thyroidectomy between January 2020 and June 2022; 67 were treated with conventional thyroidectomy, the other 67 underwent surgery adopting an autofluorescence detecting device.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to describe the use of near-infrared autofluorescence (NIR-AF) to identify and preserve parathyroid glands (PGs) in a group of patients with advanced hypopharyngeal/laryngeal cancer undergone total (pharyngo)laryngectomy with hemi- or total thyroidectomy.

Methods: At San Raffaele Hospital, Milan (Italy), from January 2021 to May 2021, 7 patients affected by cT4a laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) underwent surgery using an autofluorescence detection system (Fluobeam-Fluoptics). For proper surgical planning, the demolition phase envisaged extension of the intervention to 4 hemithyroidectomies and 3 total thyroidectomies associated, respectively, with homolateral or bilateral CCND.

Background: Obstructive pathology is a benign condition of the salivary glands that can affect elderly and co-morbid people. Sialoendoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure with a success rate comparable to standard sialoadenectomy and has the advantage that it can be performed under local anaesthesia.

Methods: This study aimed to assess sialoendoscopy benefits in elderly patients unfit for general anaesthesia.

The cyclotron frequency ratio of ^{187}Os^{29+} to ^{187}Re^{29+} ions was measured with the Penning-trap mass spectrometer PENTATRAP. The achieved result of R=1.000 000 013 882(5) is to date the most precise such measurement performed on ions.

We observed electronic K x rays emitted from muonic iron atoms using superconducting transition-edge sensor microcalorimeters. The energy resolution of 5.2 eV in FWHM allowed us to observe the asymmetric broad profile of the electronic characteristic Kα and Kβ x rays together with the hypersatellite K^{h}α x rays around 6 keV.

Purpose: Endoscopic endonasal balloon-assisted dacryoplasty is a minimally invasive surgical approach that can be applied after failure of dacryocystorhinostomy with recurrence of distal acquired lacrimal obstruction.

Methods: At the Department of Otolaryngology, San Raffaele Hospital, Milan (Italy), from December 2016 to October 2020, 14 patients underwent trans-nasal balloon-assisted dacryoplasty after a failed dacryocystorhinostomy (both external and endoscopic endonasal). The routinary pre-operative work-up included multidisciplinary study of the lacrimal disease, which consisted in primary ophthalmological and otorhinolaryngological visits associated with nasal endoscopy, in which a radiological exam was added if needed.

Precision study of few-electron, high-Z ions is a privileged field for probing high-field, bound-state quantum electrodynamics (BSQED). However, the accuracy of such tests is plagued by nuclear uncertainties, which are often larger than the BSQED effects under investigation. We propose an alternative method with exotic atoms and show that transitions may be found between circular Rydberg states where nuclear contributions are vanishing while BSQED effects remain large.

Objective: Interactions between SARS-CoV-2 and pharyngeal associated lymphoid tissue are thought to influence the manifestations of COVID-19. We aimed to determine whether a previous history of tonsillectomy, as a surrogate indicator of a dysfunctional pharyngeal associated lymphoid tissue, could predict the presentation and course of COVID-19.

Methods: Multicentric cross-sectional observational study involving seven hospitals in Northern and Central Italy.
