Introduction: Femoral neck fractures in patients with a history of above knee amputation present as a strain for orthopedic surgeons due to the difficulty of positioning and handling of the limb for proper reduction. Surgical treatment options typically involve open reduction internal fixation versus arthroplasty depending on patient factors such as age, surgeon skill, and available equipment.
Case Report: We present a case of a femoral neck fracture (OTA 31-B2) in a relatively active 89-year-old Caucasian male after a ground level fall that has been ambulating with a prosthesis since his teenage years.
Introduction: Proximal humerus fractures are common injuries of the upper extremity. These fractures are frequent in the elderly population due to low-energy trauma and in the younger patient secondary to high-energy trauma that is associated with shoulder dislocations. Proximal humerus fractures are frequently classified according to the Neer classification which is defined by the number of segments and the amount displacement required to define the fracture as displaced.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLong-chain fatty acid amides are signaling lipids found in mammals and other organisms; however, details of the metabolic pathways for the N-acylglycines and primary fatty acid amides (PFAMs) have remained elusive. Heavy-labeled precursor and subtraction lipidomic experiments in mouse neuroblastoma N18TG2 cells, a model cell line for the study of fatty acid amide metabolism, establish the biosynthetic pathways for the N-acylglycines and the PFAMs. We provide evidence that the N-acylglycines are formed by a long-chain specific glycine-conjugating enzyme, glycine N-acyltransferase-like 3 (GLYATL3).
