Article Synopsis
  • Research into the secondary recovery of rare earth elements (REE) has mainly focused on hard disk drives and automotive applications, highlighting the need for more knowledge on U.S. vehicles.
  • A study analyzed four vehicle models (Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, Toyota Corolla, and Honda Accord) to identify components containing Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) magnets, revealing significant differences between U.S., Japanese, and European vehicles.
  • The research found that U.S. vehicles contained NdFeB magnets primarily in speakers, estimating up to 14 tonnes available from end-of-life vehicles in 2018, though recycling challenges remain.

Apparent consumption has been widely used as a metric to estimate material demand. However, with technology advancement and complexity of material use, this metric has become less useful in tracking material flows, estimating recycling feedstocks, and conducting life cycle assessment of critical materials. We call for future research efforts to focus on building a multi-tiered consumption database for the global trade network of critical materials.
