Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) remains a leading cause of vision loss in the geriatric population. There are age-related changes in peripheral blood leukocyte composition, but their significance for AMD remains unclear. We aimed to determine changes in immune cell populations in the blood of AMD patients.

Access to BUS is dependent on practitioner availability with delays resulting in poor symptom management, delayed discharge and dissatisfaction. Developing nursing practice to perform BUS can address these patient's needs.

Purpose: To determine the diagnostic performance and reliability of two pupil perimetry (PP) methods in homonymous hemianopia.
Methods: This cross-sectional monocenter cohort study performed gaze-contingent flicker PP (gcFPP) and a virtual reality version of gcFPP (VRgcFPP) twice on separate occasions in all patients suffering from homonymous hemianopia due to neurological impairment. The main outcomes were (1) test accuracy and (2) test-retest reliability: (1) was measured through area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) calculation of (VR)gcFPP results with comparators being SAP and healthy controls, respectively; (2) was evaluated by comparing tests 1 and 2 of both methods within patients.
Background: Physical inactivity and subsequent muscle atrophy are highly prevalent in neurocritical care and are recognized as key mechanisms underlying intensive care unit acquired weakness (ICUAW). The lack of quantifiable biomarkers for inactivity complicates the assessment of its relative importance compared to other conditions under the syndromic diagnosis of ICUAW. We hypothesize that active movement, as opposed to passive movement without active patient participation, can serve as a valid proxy for activity and may help predict muscle atrophy.

Setting: Eye clinics in the Netherlands, Austria, and Germany.
Design: Randomized controlled trial with an embedded method comparison study (ClinicalTrials.
Objective: Mutations in the gene encoding for optineurin (OPTN) have been reported in the context of different neurodegenerative diseases including the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) spectrum. Based on single case reports, neuropathological data in OPTN mutation carriers have revealed transactive response DNA-binding protein 43 kDa (TDP-43) pathology, in addition to accumulations of tau and alpha-synuclein. Herein, we present two siblings from a consanguineous family with a homozygous frameshift mutation in the OPTN gene and different clinical presentations.

The goal of this analysis was to determine whether German chest pain units (CPUs) adequately address conditions with "atypical" chest pain in existing diagnostic structures.
Method: A total of 11,734 patients from the German CPU registry were included.
The intraoperative optical coherence tomography (iOCT) is recently introduced in Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) surgery, which aims to increase clinical performance and surgery safety. However, the acquisition of this modality is a substantial investment. The objective of this paper is to report on the cost-effectiveness of an iOCT-protocol in DMEK surgery with the Advanced Visualization in Corneal Surgery Evaluation (ADVISE) trial.

This paper presents and evaluates a promptly introduced triaging solution that evolved into a tool to tackle the ever-growing waiting lists at an academic ophthalmology department, the TeleTriageTeam (TTT).

Methods: Two experiments were conducted on patients with CVI (Experiment 1: 19 subjects, age M and SD 57.9 ± 14.
The assessment of the visual field in young children continues to be a challenge. Children often do not sit still, fail to fixate stimuli for longer durations, and have limited verbal capacity to report visibility. Therefore, we introduced a head-mounted VR display with gazecontingent flicker pupil perimetry (VRgcFPP).

Methods: We analyzed CD1c+ DCs from two cohorts of non-infectious uveitis patients and healthy donors using RNA-sequencing followed by high-dimensional flow cytometry to characterize the CD1c+ DC populations.
Results: We report that the CD1c+ DCs pool from patients with non-infectious uveitis is skewed toward a gene module with the chemokine receptor as the key hub gene.
Curved spaces play a fundamental role in many areas of modern physics, from cosmological length scales to subatomic structures related to quantum information and quantum gravity. In tabletop experiments, negatively curved spaces can be simulated with hyperbolic lattices. Here we introduce and experimentally realize hyperbolic matter as a paradigm for topological states through topolectrical circuit networks relying on a complex-phase circuit element.

Methods: A post hoc analysis of 65 eyes of 65 pseudophakic subjects with Fuchs endothelial dystrophy that underwent Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty surgery as part of the Advanced Visualization In Corneal Surgery Evaluation trial. All surgical recordings were assessed by 2 graders using a structured assessment form.
Background: Cataract surgery has become one of the most performed surgical procedures worldwide. Postoperative management consists of routine clinical examinations to assess post-operative visual function and detect possible adverse events. Due to the low incidence of complications, the majority of clinic visits after cataract surgery are uneventful.

Methods: Sixty-five pseudophakic eyes of 65 patients with Fuchs endothelial dystrophy scheduled for routine DMEK were recruited in this prospective non-inferiority international multicenter randomized control trial. Subjects were randomized to the control arm (n=33) without iOCT-use and raising the intraocular pressure above normal physiological limits for 8 minutes (i.

Purpose: A scene consisting of a white stimulus on a black background incorporates strong luminance contrast. When both stimulus and background receive different colors, luminance contrast decreases but color contrast increases. Here, we sought to characterize the pattern of stimulus salience across varying trade-offs of color and luminance contrasts by using the pupil light response.

Three groups of cows were used. Group 1 comprised 70 healthy cows representing four dairy breeds (Brown Swiss, Swiss Fleckvieh, Holstein Friesian, Water Buffalo) and three beef breeds (Raetian Grey, Limousin, Highland).

Ophthalmological evaluation at diagnosis enables early detection of vision loss, decision-making about treatment, and when applicable, the timely use of visual interventions. However, awareness of visual impairment in clinical practice is suboptimal, and adherence to ophthalmological evaluation needs to be improved.

However, a need has arisen for an objective, and less time-consuming method. Pupil perimetry (PP), which uses pupil responses to onsets of bright stimuli as indications of visual sensitivity, fulfills these requirements.

The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane register CENTRAL, MEDLINE and Embase were searched and studies published between January 2015 and May 2021 were included. The certainty of evidence was assessed according to the GRADE methodology.

The present study reveals the root anatomy and mycorrhizal pattern of eight mycoheterotrophic Thismia spp. (Thismiaceae), all of which show separate tissue compartments segregating different hyphal shapes of the mycorrhizal colonization, as there are intact straight, coiled and peculiarly knotted hyphae as well as degenerated clumps of hyphal material.
