Purpose: To assess the safety and efficacy of ripasudil for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).

Study Design: Phase 1/2, multicenter, open-label, single-arm, 12-week clinical trial.

Methods: Infants born with gestational age (GA) of ≤ 32 weeks or weight of ≤ 1500 g with zone I or II, ≥ stage 1, ROP in both eyes were enrolled.

A comprehensive study on non-cancer-related mortality risk factors in elderly gastric cancer patients post-curative surgery.

Background: The increasing incidence of gastric cancer in the elderly underscores the need for an in-depth understanding of the challenges and risks associated with surgical interventions in this demographic. This study aims to investigate the risk factors and prognostic indicators for non-cancer-related mortality following curative surgery in elderly gastric cancer patients.

Methods: This retrospective analysis examined 684 patients with pathological Stage I-III gastric cancer who underwent curative resection between January 2012 and December 2021.

The association between the increased performance of laparoscopic colon surgery and a reduced risk of surgical site infection.

Purpose: Surgical site infection (SSI) is the most frequently occurring nosocomial infection. Remarkable surgical progress has recently been made in laparoscopic surgery. Therefore, our objective was to investigate the association between increased rates of laparoscopic colon surgery and SSI.

Ligand binding assay critical reagents and their stability: recommendations and best practices from the Global Bioanalysis Consortium Harmonization Team.

The L4 Global Harmonization Team on reagents and their stability focused on the management of critical reagents for pharmacokinetic, immunogenicity, and biomarker ligand binding assays. Regulatory guidance recognizes that reagents are important for ligand binding assays but do not address numerous aspects of critical reagent life cycle management. Reagents can be obtained from external vendors or developed internally, but regardless of their source, there are numerous considerations for their reliable long-term use.

International harmonization of bioanalysis regulation: discussion in Global Bioanalysis Consortium harmonization teams.

The Japan Bioanalysis Forum was established in August 2011 by delegates from industry, regulators and academia. The forum was founded as the place for discussion on regulated bioanalysis in Japan, where the bioanalytical topics in the west such as the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists/US FDA workshops have long been of interest. The forum's 3rd symposium presented the latest updates on activities in the Global Bioanalysis Consortium to approximately 300 attendees of industry, regulators and academia.

Potential of reduction in total tumor volume measured with 3D-MRI as a prognostic factor for locally-advanced breast cancer patients treated with primary chemotherapy.

For accurate assessment of the response to primary chemotherapy (PCT) for locally advanced breast cancer, we measured reduction in total tumor volume (TTV) by using three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (3D MRI), and examined the relationship between this reduction and patient prognosis. Fifty-one patients with locally advanced breast cancer were treated with four cycles of docetaxel (60 mg/m(2)) before surgery. Tumor size was measured with calipers, ultrasonography (US) and conventional two-dimensional (2D) MRI before and after chemotherapy.

[Hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy using W-spiral (WS) catheter].

The authors investigated the usefulness of W-Spiral (WS) catheters for hepatic arterial infusion (HAI) chemotherapy especially from the viewpoint of a removable catheter after cessation of chemotherapy. A WS catheter was successfully inserted into the hepatic artery without a coil fixation in 40 out of 47 patients with hepatic malignant disease. A stable position of the catheter tip was maintained throughout the period in all cases.

[Application of metallic stents for both inferior vena cava and biliary obstruction by lymph node involvement in a patient with recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma].

The authors experienced a case with obstruction of the inferior vena cava (IVC) and the common bile duct due to a recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma. In order to improve severe edema of the lower extremities and obstructive jaundice, IVC metallic stent as well as biliary stent were applied. A Luminexx stent of 8 cm in length was placed in the bile duct via subcutaneous route after biliary drainage.

Double congenital bronchoesophageal fistulae in an adult.

We report adult congenital bronchoesophageal fistula with both symptomatic fistula and asymptomatic one. A 56-year-old woman with a history of cough after drinking fluids was diagnosed as bronchoesophageal fistula by upper gastrointestinal series that showed a diverticulum in the middle portion of the esophagus with a fistula between the esophagus and right lower lung. Esophagoscopy revealed an orifice of the fistula located 27 cm from the incisors.

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue-type lymphoproliferative lesion of the common bile duct.

Only a few cases of primary lymphoma of the common bile duct have been reported up to now. Here, we report a mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT)-type lymphoproliferative lesion of the common bile duct with some considerations about MALT lymphoma and benign lymphoproliferation. The patient, a 71-year-old woman, was admitted to our hospital because of progressive epigastric pain.

[Prophylactic hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy after resection of colorectal liver metastases using removable W-spiral catheter].

The authors investigated the usefulness of W-Spiral Catheters for adjuvant hepatic arterial infusion (HAI) chemotherapy following curative resection of colorectal liver metastases. The catheter has a special shape-memory alloy in its tip, which allows preferable fixation without coils and removal of the catheter if desired. A W-spiral catheter was successfully placed in 13 out of 16 patients who had undergone curative hepatectomy.

[Successful treatment of postoperative multiple hepatic recurrence with hepatic arterial infusion of cisplatin and degrable starch microspheres].

A 38-year-old man had multiple recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with portal vein thrombosis after hepatectomy and postoperative transcatheter arterial chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). He was treated by trans hepatic arterial embolization (TAE) with 100 mg of cisplatin (CDDP) and degrable starch microspheres (DSM). After 3 courses were administered, the recurrent lesions almost disappeared on CT, and the postoperative rise in PIVKA-II level and AFP level normalized.

[A case of gastric cancer with multiple liver metastasis responding to combination therapy of CPT-11 and CDDP].

A 63-year-old man suffering from advanced gastric carcinoma after distal gastric resection had multiple liver metastases 5 months after the operation. He underwent 3 courses of combination chemotherapy of 5-FU 600 mg/day with CDDP 50 mg/day, etoposide 100 mg/day and Leucovorin 30 mg/day for 5 days (FLEP), but progressive disease (PD) was noted. One additional course of combination chemotherapy with CPT-11 140 mg/day and CDDP 40 mg/day biweekly was performed and a complete response (CR) was noted.

[Reasonable approach for prophylactic hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy after potentially curative surgery for colorectal liver metastases].

The authors discuss the reasonable management of implantable ports and catheters after cessation of adjuvant hepatic arterial infusion (HAI) chemotherapy following curative resection of colorectal liver metastases. Local recurrence in the residual liver was observed in only 4 patients of thirty-two patients (13%). Although heparin administration into the port was regularly performed in 17 patients to prevent its occlusion, the ports were successfully maintained in only 9 patients at a median time of 11.

The affinity maturation of anti-4-hydroxy-3-nitrophenylacetyl mouse monoclonal antibody. A calorimetric study of the antigen-antibody interaction.

To understand the mechanism of affinity maturation, we examined the antigen-antibody interactions between 4-hydroxy-3-nitrophenylacetyl (NP) caproic acid and the Fab fragments of three anti-NP antibodies, N1G9, 3B44, and 3B62, by isothermal titration calorimetry. The analyses have revealed that all of these interactions are mainly driven by negative changes in enthalpy. The enthalpy changes decreased linearly with temperature in the range of 25-45 degrees C, producing negative changes in heat capacity.

[Localization of pancreatic insulinomas by combined radiographic methods].

Seventeen cases with a total of eighteen insulinomas were examined by ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), angiography, percutaneous transhepatic portal and pancreatic venous sampling (PTPS) and intraoperative ultrasonography (IOUS). We discussed about diagnostic accuracy of insulinomas on these diagnostic modalities. Tumor localization was achieved by US in 39%, CT in 72% and angiography in 81%.
