Report of an unusual case of a conjunctival cyst with Liesegang rings.

Liesegang rings are laminated precipitation structures well recognized in the field of chemistry. We present a rare case of a 64-year-old man who sought examination for a conjunctival cystic lesion of several months' duration, located in the right nasal bulbar conjunctiva near the plica semilunaris. The lesion was excised completely and uneventfully under local anaesthesia.

Eyelid pilomatrixoma: a description of 16 cases and a review of the literature.

Pilomatrixoma is an uncommon benign neoplasm that originates from the matrix of the hair root. It occurs more frequently in the head and neck region of children and adolescents, often involving the eyelid or eyebrow. Pilomatrixoma is often misdiagnosed clinically and the correct diagnosis can be established only after excision and histological examination.

Lesions of the caruncle: a description of 42 cases and a review of the literature.

Lesions of the caruncle are uncommon. On account of the histological composition of the caruncle, which includes, in addition to conjunctiva, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, sweat glands, and accessory lacrimal tissue, the caruncle may develop lesions that may be similar to those found in the skin, conjunctiva, or lacrimal gland. Clinical preoperative diagnosis is very difficult and reached only in about half of the cases.

Conjunctival autografting combined with low-dose mitomycin C for prevention of primary pterygium recurrence.

Purpose: To compare the clinical outcome of pterygium surgery combining intraoperative mitomycin C (MMC) with a free conjunctival autograft, with three other methods of pterygium surgery, including intraoperative MMC alone, conjunctival autograft alone, and bare sclera without adjunctive treatment.

Design: Interventional, randomized and in part nonrandomized, prospective, comparative study.

Methods: setting: A university medical center department of ophthalmology.

Mitomycin C for pterygium: long term evaluation.

Aim: To evaluate long term complications after pterygium excision with mitomycin C (MMC) application.

Design: Prospective non-comparative interventional case series.

Participants: Ninety nine patients who underwent pterygium surgery and participated in a controlled study for efficacy of MMC for pterygium surgery between 1989 and 1994.

Anterior uveitis as a complication of treatment with high dose cytosine-arabinoside.

We present a case of a 21-year-old woman suffering from diffuse large B-cell lymphoma who developed acute anterior uveitis shortly after completing chemotherapeutic course with HYPER-CVAD protocol (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and dexamethasone) alternating with methotrexate and high-dose cytosine-arabinoside (HIDAC), with poor adherence to recommended prophylactic treatment with saline eye drops. Complete resolution of her symptoms was achieved within a few days of treatment with topical steroids. To our knowledge this is the first report of acute anterior uveitis secondary to treatment with HIDAC.

Proliferative activity and p53 expression in primary and recurrent pterygia.

Purpose: To assess p53 expression and proliferative activity in primary and recurrent pterygia from the same eyes.

Design: Retrospective comparative human tissue study.

Participants: Tissue from excised primary pterygia that did not recur (group A, n = 10) was compared with tissue from primary pterygia that recurred (group B, n = 10) and to the recurrent pterygia tissue that was excised from subjects in group B (group C, n = 10).

Glandular tumors of the lacrimal sac. Their histopathologic patterns and possible origins.

Purpose: To describe and characterize the primary lacrimal sac epithelial tumors of glandular origin, and to describe their possible source from glands in the lacrimal sac and nasolacrimal duct walls.

Methods: The authors conducted a clinicopathologic study on 14 patients with epithelial lacrimal sac tumors of possible glandular origin. In addition, they reviewed 35 surgical specimens of the lacrimal sac and nasolacrimal duct region and 13 cadaver specimens of the lacrimal sac region.

Intraoperative application of topical mitomycin C for pterygium surgery.

Background: Postoperative recurrence of pterygium occurs in many patients. The authors studied the recurrence rate of pterygium after administration of a single intraoperative dosage of topcial mitomycin C at the completion of pterygium excision.

Methods And Patients: Eighty-one patients underwent excision of the pterygium, leaving the sclera bare.

Epibulbar complex choristoma associated with nevus sebaceus.

We encountered an infant with nevus sebaceus of Jadassohn who was born with a striking pedunculated mass on the superotemporal aspect of the anterior sclera and limbus of the left eye. In addition, two small choroidal colobomas were seen in the papillomacular bundle area of the same eye. Histopathologic examination of the excised mass revealed a mixture of ectodermal and mesodermal elements, including cartilage and bone.

We studied the recurrence rate of pterygium after administration of a single dosage of topical mitomycin C at the completion of pterygium surgery. Forty patients who had advanced or recurrent pterygium underwent excision of pterygium, leaving the sclera bare. Patients were randomized in a masked fashion into two groups of 20 patients each.

Background: The administration of high doses of topical mitomycin C after pterygium excision causes a variety of complications.

Methods: Seventy-five patients who had advanced or recurrent pterygia underwent excision of pterygia, leaving the sclera bare. Patients were randomized in a masked fashion into three groups of 25 patients each.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the conjunctiva.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of the conjunctiva is an extremely rare tumour, and only three previous cases have been reported. We describe two patients with MFH of the conjunctiva: a 58-year-old white male with epibulbar tumour who had exenteration and is alive after five years' follow-up, and a 3 1/2-year-old African girl with xeroderma pigmentosum and an MFH of her right eye conjunctiva, the first reported case of this association. The characteristics and the methods of diagnosis of MFH are discussed.

Lacrimal canalicular papillomatosis.

Three new cases of lacrimal canalicular papillomatosis are reported and the total of 12 cases in the literature reviewed. They present with epiphora or a local mass. Multiple recurrences over many years is characteristic.

Conjunctival myxoma: a case report.

A rare case of conjunctival myxoma in an 18-year-old female is reported. Clinically it presented as a painless mass located in the nasal bulbar conjunctiva. It was composed of spindle and stellate shaped cells in a loose mucoid stroma.

Ocular injuries in Malawi.

A survey was made of 205 patients admitted to hospital for ocular trauma in Malawi in south-east Africa from January 1976 to December 1977. Results of the survey show that eye trauma is a relatively common problem in this developing country, occurring most frequently in children, young adults, and males. Most eye injuries in Malawi occurred under domestic circumstances; the major cause of ocular trauma was associated with chopping and gathering wood.
