Introduction: Intraoperative hypotension (IH) is an independent predictor of mortality. Some experts have suggested that ultrasound measurement of the inferior vena cava (IVC) in spontaneous ventilation can predict IH.

Objective: To evaluate the capacity of ultrasound measures of IVC in spontaneous ventilation to predict episodes of IH after anaesthesia induction.

Article Synopsis
  • Several studies have investigated cannabidiol (CBD) for its potential to reduce anxiety and depression, although the exact biological mechanisms are still not fully understood.
  • In experiments with 130 male mice, different doses of CBD were tested for their effects on anxiety and depressive-like behaviors, revealing that a dose of 20 mg/kg was most effective in wild-type mice, while the anxiolytic effects were absent in mice lacking the CB1 cannabinoid receptor.
  • Additionally, changes in gene expression related to cannabinoid receptors and GABA(A) subunits were observed, suggesting that CBD operates through complex pathways in the brain that vary by dose and brain region.

The impact of respiratory coinfections in COVID-19 is still not well understood despite the growing evidence that consider coinfections greater than expected. A total of 295 patients older than 18 years of age, hospitalized with a confirmed diagnosis of moderate/severe pneumonia due to SARS-CoV-2 infection (according to definitions established by the Ministry of Health of Peru) were enrolled during the study period. A coinfection with one or more respiratory pathogens was detected in 154 (52.

A descriptive design was carried out studying the correlation between antimicrobial consumption and resistance profiles of ESKAPE pathogens (, , , , , and spp.) in a Peruvian hospital, including the surgical, clinical areas and the intensive care unit (ICU) during the time period between 2015 and 2018. There was a significant correlation between using ceftazidime and the increase of carbapenem-resistant isolations (R = 0.

Introduction: Arterial lactate, mixed venous O saturation, venous minus arterial CO partial pressure (PCO) and the ratio between this gradient and the arterial minus venous oxygen content (PCO/CO) were proposed as markers of tissue hypoperfusion and oxygenation. The main goals were to characterize the determinants of PCO and PCO/CO, and the interchangeability of the variables calculated from mixed and central venous samples.

Methods: 35 cardiac surgery patients were included.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global threat to public health. Antibiotic stewardship programs (AMSP) promote the proper use of antimicrobials, improve clinical and economic outcomes, and helps containing the AMR.

Aim: To evaluate the diagnostic phase of the AMS programs and early implementation of AMS at three high complexity hospitals that belong to the social security system in Peru.

Azole resistance among Aspergillus fumigatus isolates, which is mainly related to mutations in the cyp51A gene, is a concern because it is rising, worldwide disseminated, and associated with treatment failure and death. Data on azole resistance of aspergillus from Latin American countries is very scarce and do not exist for Peru. Two hundred and seven Aspergillus clinical isolates collected prospectively underwent mycology and molecular testing for specie identification, and 143 isolates were confirmed as A.

Background: Mycophenolate (MF) is effective as induction therapy for lupus nephritis (LN) in patients with normal renal function; however, little is known about its role in patients with impaired renal failure. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the response to MF in LN and its association with baseline renal function.

Methods: Data were obtained for 90 patients from 12 Spanish renal units who were receiving MF as induction therapy for LN.

Development of tuberculosis infection in a renal transplant patient is infrequent in Spain, although the prevalence is higher than in the general population. These patients usually receive calcineurin inhibitors as the main component of their immunosuppressive treatment. The metabolism of these drugs, whether cyclosporine or tacrolimus, involves cytochrome P-450 3A.

We present a retrospective study on 74 patients with inespecific chronic ulcerative colitis according to diagnostic criteria. The higher incidence was present in patients between 30 and 40 years old. The most frequent symptom was diarrhea (95%), abdominal pain (79%), rectal bleeding (87%), rectal tenesmus (50%), weight loss (36%), and fever (18%).

To obtain an adequate cervical smear for making a correct cytologic diagnosis, smear taking, laboratory handling and interpretation must be optimal. Many people are involved, and only by a combined effort of all links can this target be seriously approached: the smear takers will have to be open minded about technical improvements and read the morphologic descriptions cautiously; in the laboratory, cytotechnicians and physicians will have to challenge themselves and each other. It is mandatory to discard specimens that do not meet general standards of adequacy.
