The imagistic evaluation of non-neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is crucial for diagnosis, monitoring progression, and guiding management of the disease. Dry AMD, characterized primarily by the presence of drusen and retinal pigment epithelium atrophy, requires detailed visualization of the retinal structure to assess its severity and progression. Several imaging modalities are pivotal in the evaluation of non-neovascular AMD, including optical coherence tomography, fundus autofluorescence, or color fundus photography.

Periodic assessment of bacterial contamination is necessary as it allows proper guidance in cases of eye infections through the use of appropriate antibiotics. Due to the extensive use of antibiotic treatment, many strains of the microbiota that cause infections are resistant to the usual ophthalmic antibiotics. The present study provides an updated assessment of the susceptibility of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria found on the ocular surface to the most commonly used antibiotic agents in patients undergoing cataract surgery.

The aim of this review is to analyze the correlations between the changes in the ganglion cell complex (GCC) and the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) on optical coherence tomography in different possible situations, especially in eyes with glaucoma. For glaucoma evaluation, several studies have suggested that in the early stages, GCC analysis, especially the thickness of the infero and that of the inferotemporal GCC layers, is a more sensitive examination than circumpapillary RNFL (pRNFL). In the moderate stages of glaucoma, inferior pRNFL thinning is better correlated with the disease than in advanced cases.

Unlabelled: The pathogeneses of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and age-related hearing impairment are not yet fully understood. If AMD and age-related hearing impairment are correlated, the cause of both may be a result of a common vulnerability. The aim of this study was to assess the interrelation between age-related macular degeneration and age-related hearing loss.

A 68-year-old male addressed to our clinic complaining of gradual loss of visual acuity and perceptual distortions. He had a history of extrathoracic hematoma and essential hypertension. The clinical assessment revealed bilateral retinal hemorrhages and white-green foveal and extrafoveal areas.

The human eye is made up of multiple layers of pigmented tissues that have in componence melanin. In the eye, one can separate melanosomes from various embryonic origins. The pigment-producing cells in the stroma of the iris, ciliary body and the choroid (uveal melanocytes) are neural crest derivatives.

Our study investigated the changes produced by diabetes on the visual pathway in a Wistar rat model. The impact of diabetes at 10 weeks after intraperitoneal streptozotocin (STZ) injection was evaluated through electrophysiological methods like visual evoked potentials (VEP) and electroretinogram (ERG). VEP and ERG were recorded simultaneously under different sevoflurane anesthetic depths.

Hyperglycemia and bright light are powerful stress agents that produce an enhanced retinal damage, when simultaneously acting on retina. Previous studies have shown that preconditioning with sevoflurane anesthesia offers a certain degree of protection to retinal cells against light damage. The objective of this study was to explore the effect of sevoflurane anesthetic preconditioning on a model of light-induced retinal degeneration in diabetic rats.

Diplopia (seeing double) is an ophthalmologic complaint found mainly in elder patients. It can have both ocular and neurological causes. A careful history and clinical examination must detail the type of diplopia (monocular/ binocular), onset, and progression, associated and relieving factors.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is responsible for many of the cell behavior processes, including cell proliferation and growth, survival, change in cell shape, migration, and differentiation. The most important component of the ECM is heparan sulfate (HS), because it insures the storage of many cell communication proteins, necessary for the continuous and identical renewal of cells and thus for tissue regeneration. Regenerating agents (RGTA®) are bioengineered structural analogues of heparan sulfate glycosaminoglycans that replace the degraded endogenous HS of the ECM.

Glaucoma after chemical burns represents a posttraumatic glaucoma, usually open-angle glaucoma. It is a frequent complication of chemical burns, especially with alkali and it can appear in the acute stage or as a late complication. Because of the complications and scars, the treatment is very difficult.

The purpose of this study is to review current surgical treatment and new and better alternatives for patients with glaucoma. Glaucoma refers to a group of related eye disorders that have in common an optic neuropathy associated with visual function loss. It is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide.

The authors report a case of upper eyelid abscess in a 30 year old male that presented in the ophthalmology department with complains of recurrent eyelid pyosis, hyperaemia and swelling that started 2 months earlier and that did not ease to repeated courses of antibiotic therapy. The reported history of the patient revealed frontal sinus trauma that occurred 5 years before and that required surgical treatment (fixation with titan plaque and screws) with total healing and giving no further complains over the next years. The present cranial CT imaging showed intraorbital fat infiltration with displacement of one orbital arcade screw.

The purpose of this systemic review was to investigate the indications of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) in the treatment of ocular diseases. For this, a comprehensive literature research was performed exploring the current use of anti-VEGF in a variety of retinal or anterior segment diseases and highlighting the visual outcome for these patients. The anti-VEGF therapy is now commonly used for a wide range of pathologies like age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion or diabetic retinopathy.

Glaucoma refers to a group of related eye disorders that have in common an optic neuropathy associated with visual function loss. It is the second leading cause of blindness in developed countries and Romania and the first cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. In Europe, 2% of the population over 40 and 7% of the population over 80 have glaucoma.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to review the current understanding of plateau iris configuration and syndrome, focusing on diagnosis and treatment options.
  • Plateau iris syndrome is a form of primary angle closure glaucoma resulting from a large or anteriorly placed ciliary body that obstructs the trabecular meshwork, mainly affecting younger patients.
  • Diagnosis can be achieved using ultrasound biomicroscopy or optical coherence tomography, and the preferred treatment is argon laser peripheral iridoplasty, especially if iridotomy does not open the angle.

Objectives: The objective of our study was to review the current knowledge on Cogan's syndrome, including etiology, diagnosis and treatment. Systematic review methodology: Relevant publications on Cogan's syndrome from 1945 to 2014 were studied.

Conclusions: Cogan's syndrome is a rare autoimmune vasculitis, with unknown pathogenesis.
