Unlabelled:  Introduction: The world population is getting older with each passing year.Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrinological cancer and its incidence is increasing in all populations. Although the increase in prevalence has been attributed more to the increased use of imaging methods and to the higher sensitivity of ultrasonography (USG) by some authorities, there are also studies suggesting a real increase.

Clinicopathological analysis of parotid masses: six-year experience of a tertiary center.

Objective: To analyse the clinical and histopathological characteristics of parotid gland masses at a tertiary referral centre and to compare the results with those cited in literature.

Methods: The retrospective study was conducted at Adana Numune Training and Research Hospital, Adana, Turkey, and comprised data of patients undergoing parotid surgery between January 2011 and December 2016. They were evaluated in terms of age, gender, surgery method, fine-needle aspiration biopsy results, specimen reports and complications after the surgery for one year.

Evaluation of Serum Selenium and Erythrocyte Glutathione Peroxidase Levels in Patients with Recurrent Tonsillitis.

The aim of this study is to investigate serum selenium (Se) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) levels in patients with recurrent tonsillitis. The study included 53 patients with recurrent tonsillitis and 51 healthy children. The measurement of serum Se levels were done in graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer using Zeeman background correction.

Effects of Cartilage Scoring in Correction of Prominent Ear with Incisionless Otoplasty Technique in Pediatric Patients.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy, complication rates, patient satisfaction, and recurrence risks of the incisionless otoplasty technique performed with or without cartilage scoring for correcting the prominent ear in pediatric patients.

Material And Methods: A total of 49 patients with prominent ears were operated with incisionless otoplasty. In Group 1, 44 ears of 24 patients were operated with incisionless otoplasty without cartilage scoring.

A modification of incisionless otoplasty for correcting the prominent ear deformity.

This article describes a modification of the incisionless otoplasty. We investigated the complication rates, recurrence risks, and patient satisfaction with this modified procedure. In total, 26 patients (49 ears) complaining of prominent ear were operated on.

High-grade transformation of adenoid cystic carcinoma delineated with a fibrous rim: a case report.

Background: High-grade transformation or dedifferentiation in carcinoma is progression of a low-grade malignant neoplasm to a high-grade carcinoma or poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. This is rarely observed in adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary glands.

Case Report: A 39 year-old woman presented with a painless mass at the left submandibulary region that had been growing slowly for 5 years.

Antrochoanal polyp: clinical presentation and retrospective comparison of endoscopic sinus surgery and endoscopic sinus surgery plus mini-Caldwell surgical procedures.

Antrochoanal polyp is a benign polypoid lesion orginating from the maxillary sinus antrum and extending to the choana. Our aim was to assess the clinical presentation and associated rhinological findings of antrochoanal polyp patients and to evaluate results of 2 surgical treatments termed endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) and ESS plus mini-Caldwell operation. The study included 46 patients.

Trace elements in nasal polyps.

The aim of our study is to evaluate the status of selenium and zinc in nasal polyp tissues and to investigate the possible role of trace elements and antioxidants including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in nasal polyps. In this study, the antioxidant enzyme and trace element levels measured in polyp tissues of 37 patients were compared with the levels measured in conchal mucosa of 27 control cases. The antioxidant enzyme and trace element levels in tissues were measured with graphite and flame spectrophotometry methods using Shimatsu UV.

Malondialdehyde level and adenosine deaminase activity in adenoid tissue of patients with OME and obstructive adenoid hypertrophy.

Objective: The aim of our study was to determine and compare adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) level in adenoid tissue of patients with or without otitis media with effusion (OME).

Methods: The study included 30 patients undergoing adenoidectomy due to obstructive adenoid hypertrophy (OAH) or OME. Tissue MDA level was measured by the method of Okawa with modification and tissue ADA activity by the method of Giusti.

The effect of intraperitoneal administration of zinc aspartate on myringosclerosis in perforated tympanic membranes of rats.

Objectives: The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of zinc aspartate on myringosclerosis in perforated rat tympanic membrane.

Patients And Methods: Fifteen Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups each containing five rats. Automicroscopic examinations were performed and then all rats were bilaterally myringotomized.

[Reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Voice Handicap Index].

Objectives: We investigated the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Voice Handicap Index (VHI), and developed a short VHI form that would be more practical.

Patients And Methods: The original VHI was translated to Turkish by 10 otolaryngologists, then it was translated back to English by a linguist, and the final text was prepared by the evaluation committee composed of three members. The translated version was administered to a group of 220 subjects twice with 7-14 days intervals.

The effects of noise on hearing and oxidative stress in textile workers.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of noise on hearing, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes in textile workers. Thirty textile workers exposed to high noise 105 dB (A) in a textile factory, and 30 healthy male volunteers in our hospital as a control group were included in the study. In both groups, following audiometric tests, blood samples were obtained.

Effect of N-acetylcysteine on carboplatin-induced ototoxicity and nitric oxide levels in a rat model.

Objective: The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) given 30 minutes before carboplatin administration on carboplatin-induced ototoxicity and nitric oxide (NO) levels in a rat model.

Methods: Eighteen Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups that each contained six animals.

Objective: This study was conducted to investigate whether there is any difference between tonsillar surface and deep tissue cultures in patients who underwent tonsillectomy for recurrent tonsillitis.

Methods: Tonsillar surface and core tonsillar cultures were taken in all patients. The samples were inoculated into 5% sheep blood, chocolate, and MacConkey agar.

An interesting kind of smokeless tobacco (Maras powder) is used commonly in lieu of cigarettes in Kahramanmaras and its environs, in Turkey. The object of the present study was to investigate the effects of the Maras powder (MP) on oral mucosa and to examine the expression of Ki-67 in oral mucosa samples taken from MP users.

The effect of stimulus duration on perception of Turkish vowels in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired children.

The objective of the study was to examine the effects of stimulus duration on vowel perception in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired children. For this purpose, 80 semisynthetic vowel stimuli consisting of eight different Turkish vowels with ten different durations were presented to 14 normal-hearing and 15 hearing impaired children, and they were asked to identify the vowel they heard. Thirteen normal-hearing adults served as speaker subjects to get normative data on mean durations of the Turkish vowels.

Bacteremia during open septorhinoplasty.

Background: In this study, we aimed at determining the incidence of bacteremia during septoplasty and open septorhinoplasty.

Methods: The study included 60 patients (30 septoplasties and 30 open septorhinoplasties). Preoperative nasal cultures from the nasal cavity and vestibule were taken by using swabs, and blood cultures were obtained from peripheral veins preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively.

Malondialdehyde level and adenosine deaminase activity in nasal polyps.

Objective: Although there are many reports on adenosine deaminase (ADA) activities in different tissues, no information is available about the enzyme activity in nasal mucosa and polyp tissues. Whereas ADA is related to the production of free radicals by neutrophils, malondialdehyde (MDA) is an indicator of lipid peroxidation that is a general mechanism of tissue damage by free radicals. This study is aimed at determining and comparing the ADA activity and MDA level in nasal polyps and normal mucosa.

[Pilomatrixoma of the head and neck in six cases].

Pilomatrixomas are benign neoplasms of the hair follicle, presenting as a mass in the head and neck region. Those arising from the parotid region may pose a diagnostic challenge. We present six patients (age range 6 to 68 years) with pilomatrixoma in the head and neck region.

[Clinical changes in the oral cavity resulting from smokeless tobacco (Maraş powder)].

Objectives: Maraş powder (MP) is a kind of smokeless tobacco prepared by a mixture of ash and the powder obtained from the leaves of a tobacco plant called "deli tütün" in the region. In this study, we investigated the physical changes occurring in the oral cavity of MP users.

Outcome of surgery for crooked nose: an objective method of evaluation.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to report the authors' surgical results, and to present their method of angle measurement using the Scion Image computer program to evaluate surgical results for crooked noses.

Methods: The study included 27 patients with crooked noses: classified as C-type and 14 classified as I-type. Deviation angles were measured by using the Scion Image computer program on frontal views before and at least 3 months after the operation.

Nicotine is used in different forms including smokeless tobacco. A special kind of smokeless tobacco also known as Maraş powder (MP) is widely used in southeastern region, especially Kahramanmaraş, Gaziantep and other southeastern cities of Turkey. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of nicotine on hematological parameters in MP users.

The effects of vowels on voice perturbation measures.

This study examines voice perturbation parameters of the sustained [a] in English and of the eight vowels in Turkish to discover whether any difference exists between these languages, and whether a correlation exists between voice perturbation parameters and articulatory and acoustic properties of the Turkish vowels. Eight Turkish vowels uttered by 26 healthy nonsmoker volunteer males who are native Turkish speakers were compared with a voice database that includes samples of normal and disordered voices belonging to American English speakers. Fundamental frequencies, the first and second formants, and perturbation parameters, such as jitter percent, pitch perturbation quotient, shimmer percent, and amplitude perturbation quotient of the sustained vowels, were measured.

The effects of Maras powder (smokeless tobacco) on oxidative stress in users.

Maras Powder (MP) is a special kind of smokeless tobacco widely used in the southeast region of Turkey especially in Kahramanmaras and Gaziantep and other southeastern cities. It is obtained from a tobacco species, Nicotiana rustica L and ash of oak or grapevine wood. Tobacco may increase oxidative stress, which is related to the products of the oxygen metabolism taking place in all cells.
