Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed the essential oils from pastinocello carrots and nine commercial carrot varieties using GC/MS to compare their chemical compositions.
  • Selective breeding has diminished bitterness and enhanced sweetness in cultivated carrots, while pastinocello carrots have seen reduced cultivation and risk of genetic erosion.
  • Key components found in pastinocello carrot oils included geranyl acetate and α-pinene, significantly differing from the essential oils of the commercial carrot varieties.

Liquid chromatography electro-spray tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI/MS/MS) was applied to the determination of sweet glycosides (steviol glycosides), and toxic aglycon steviol in 24 samples of Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) aerial parts, which had been experimentally cultivated in Italy, although derived from seeds of different geographical origin. On the basis of the specific fragmentation of these compounds, an LC-MS/MS method was developed with the aim of quantifying analytes in plant material. Although toxic steviol was not detectable in all the samples, the samples with the highest levels of steviol glycosides were identified.

Article Synopsis
  • Nine accessions of Abelmoschus esculentus and three of Abelmoschus moschatus were evaluated for seed production and volatile compounds in Central Italy.
  • Seventy volatile compounds were identified in A. esculentus seeds, with isopentyl 2-methyl butanoate and heptanoic acid being the most abundant.
  • In A. moschatus, 93 volatile compounds were detected, including n-tridecane and decanal, highlighting significant differences in volatiles between the species and among its accessions.
