Objective: Nontyphoidal infection is one of the most common foodborne illnesses, and its oncogenic potential has been documented in animal models. The primary goal of this study was to examine whether individuals who were exposed to enteric infection are more likely to develop colorectal cancer (CRC) than the general population through the linkage of 2 statewide public health surveillance databases.

Materials And Methods: We designed a 2-stage probabilistic linkage, starting with 17,587 records of enteric salmonellosis reported to Michigan Department of Health and Human Services between 1992 and 2020.

Diet plays critical roles in defining our immune responses, microbiome, and progression of human diseases. With recent progress in sequencing and bioinformatic techniques, increasing evidence indicates the importance of diet-microbial interactions in cancer development and therapeutic outcome. Here, we focus on the epidemiological studies on diet-bacterial interactions in the colon cancer.

Infection by Helicobacter pylori (Hp) has been causally linked to risk of gastric cancer (GC). The coevolution of Hp and humans shaped the risk of GC as our species left Africa and migrated to the other continents. Latin America (LatAm) is a high GC incidence region where Hp evolved uniquely in the 500 years since European colonization.

We previously reported the neuroprotective potential of combined hydrogen (H) gas ventilation therapy and therapeutic hypothermia (TH) by assessing the short-term neurological outcomes and histological findings of 5-day neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) encephalopathy piglets. However, the effects of H gas on cerebral circulation and oxygen metabolism and on prognosis were unknown. Here, we used near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy to compare combined H gas ventilation and TH with TH alone.

  • Low levels of vitamin D are more common in Black individuals compared to White individuals, prompting a study of its effects on health outcomes among Black women in the WHI clinical trial.* -
  • A total of 3,325 Black women participated in the trial, taking calcium and vitamin D supplements or placebos over roughly 7 years, with follow-up data collected for approximately 15.7 years.* -
  • The study found no significant difference in overall mortality, cause-specific mortality, or cancer rates between those taking the supplements and those on placebo, indicating that calcium and vitamin D may not address health disparities, though certain cancers like colorectal cancer need further research.*

Background: Although adherence to the American Cancer Society (ACS) Guidelines on Nutrition and Physical Activity for Cancer Prevention associates with lower risk of obesity-related cancer (ORC) incidence and mortality, evidence in Black and Latina women is limited. This association was examined in Black and Latina participants in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI).

Methods: Semi-Markov multistate model examined the association between ACS guideline adherence and ORC incidence and mortality in the presence of competing events, combined and separately, for 9301 Black and 4221 Latina postmenopausal women.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have off-target activity on fatty acid synthase (FASN), a critical enzyme in energy balance and cancer growth. We evaluated risk of common obesity-related cancers: breast, colorectal (CRC), and endometrial, with use of PPI and histamine-2 receptor antagonists (H2RA) in 124,931 postmenopausal women enrolled in the Women's Health Initiative. Incident cancer cases were physician-adjudicated.

Compound identification is a critical step in untargeted metabolomics. Its most important procedure is to calculate the similarity between experimental mass spectra and either predicted mass spectra or mass spectra in a mass spectral library. Unlike the continuous similarity measures, there is no study to assess the performance of binary similarity measures in compound identification, even though the well-known Jaccard similarity measure has been widely used without proper evaluation.

  • Men serving on U.S. Navy nuclear-powered submarines were studied for cancer mortality related to low-level ionizing radiation exposure between 1969 and 1982, involving 85,033 enlisted men.
  • Of these, 584 cancer deaths were recorded over a follow-up of up to 27 years, with average radiation doses being low (mean: 5.7 mSv).
  • The analysis indicated a slight increase in cancer mortality risks relative to radiation doses, but results were consistent with previous studies, suggesting potential connections without definitive conclusions.

The autophagy-lysosome pathway and apoptosis constitute vital determinants of cell fate and engage in a complex interplay in both physiological and pathological conditions. Central to this interplay is the archetypal autophagic cargo adaptor p62/SQSTM1/Sequestosome-1 which mediates both cell survival and endoplasmic reticulum stress-induced apoptosis via aggregation of ubiquitinated caspase-8. Here, we investigated the role of p62-mediated apoptosis in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), which can be divided into two groups based on human papillomavirus (HPV) infection status.

Background: Gastric cancer is worldwide the fourth more common cancer type by incidence, and the third by mortality. We analyzed three missense variants of TAS2R38 gene: rs713598 (A49P), rs1726866 (V262A), and rs10246939 (I296V). These variants and their combination in haplotypes (proline, alanine and valine/tasters or alanine, valine and isoleucine/nontasters) and diplotypes are responsible for individual differences in bitter perception.

Cerebral haemodynamics during the immediate transition period in neonates may differ depending on whether delivery is vaginal or by caesarean section. However, these differences have never been confirmed by near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy (TRS). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare cerebral blood volume (CBV) and cerebral haemoglobin oxygen saturation (ScO) between healthy term neonates by mode of delivery.
