Jumping performance is influenced by body composition and excess fat mass impairs performance. Maintaining optimal fat mass and fat-free mass (FFM) is crucial for enhancing jump height. However, there is limited evidence on short-term weight loss programs that reduce fat mass without water restriction and their effects on muscle function and jumping performance.

  • Single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) is a less common method compared to multiport laparoscopic surgery (MPLS) for colonic procedures, prompting a systematic review to assess its feasibility, safety, and oncological outcomes.
  • The review analyzed multiple studies (from September to October 2023) that compared SILC with MPLC, focusing on complications and results, finding no significant differences in major outcomes, although SILC had a shorter incision.
  • Despite a gradual increase in SILS cases, its popularity has plateaued in Japan, along with a decline in related research articles, but advances in robotic surgery may revive interest in the technique.

  • A study evaluated the combination treatment of atezolizumab and bevacizumab in 14 patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma, analyzing its effectiveness and side effects.
  • The treatment showed positive results with complete response (CR) in 3 patients and partial response (PR) in 3 patients, while 6 had stable disease (SD) and 2 experienced progressive disease (PD).
  • Common side effects included proteinuria and hypothyroidism, but these were manageable, suggesting the treatment could be beneficial despite some adverse reactions.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study included 52 patients (mean age 75, 28 male and 24 female) who underwent NAC GS, with most having tumors located in the pancreatic head; however, only 2 patients completed full treatment due to necessary dose reductions.
  • * Adverse events were common, with 40.4% of patients experiencing significant neutropenia, but the treatment was generally manageable, resulting in 90.4% of patients undergoing successful R0 resection.

Article Synopsis
  • Pancreatoduodenectomy, a surgery for duodenal carcinoma, has high complications in elderly patients, prompting consideration of safer alternatives.
  • An 80-year-old man with advanced duodenal carcinoma chose to avoid surgery due to potential risks, opting for a gastroduodenal bypass and chemotherapy instead.
  • After undergoing 6 courses of the SOX regimen, the patient's tumor was effectively treated, leading to the termination of chemotherapy and 7 months of recurrence-free follow-up.

A 60s female, who had undergone single-incision laparoscopic ileocecal resection for ascending colon cancer with pathological diagnosis of T3N1bM0, Stage Ⅲb, followed by adjuvant therapy with 8 courses CAPOX 2 years ago, had enhanced- computed tomography(CT)for follow-up and a 15-mm nodule near anastomotic site was found. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography(PET)CT revealed abnormal accumulation of 18F-FDG only to the lesion and diagnosis of"anastomotic recurrence"was made. We planned and safely performed resection of the anastomotic site and the nodule.

A 70s male, who had undergone single-incision laparoscopic ileocecal resection for ascending colon cancer with pathological diagnosis of T3N3M0, Stage Ⅲc(without adjuvant chemotherapy), had enhanced-computed tomography(CT)for 3-month follow-up and a hepatic low-density area, an newly emergent nodule behind inferior vena cava and distal ileal tumor were found. Three months later, enhanced CT showed that the distal ileal tumor got exponentially larger and the diagnosis of"malignant lymphoma"was suspected. The patient became sepsis, so we planned and safely performed partial resection of the tumor.

Background: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections after pancreatectomy are relatively rare; however, they can be fatal when associated with pseudoaneurysms. For the past 12 years, we have been investigating nasal MRSA carriage by polymerase chain reaction testing, postoperatively in patients admitted to the intensive care units, to prevent nosocomial infections. Here, we investigated the relationship between MRSA nasal carriage and postoperative MRSA infection at the surgical site, following pancreatectomy.

Background: Recent developments in the field of companion diagnosis and molecular-targeting therapeutic agents have helped in developing treatments targeting human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) in gastric cancer (GC) and esophagogastric junction cancer (EGJC), and the importance of accurate diagnosis of HER2 expression is increasing. However, the HER2-positivity rate significantly differs among reports in GC and EGJC, and factors that affect HER2-positivity require elucidation.

Methods: The present study retrospectively examined factors related to HER2-positivity in a single institution, including age, sex, body mass index, the American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status, tumor information, and surgery information, including time to specimen processing.

Regorafenib has shown significant survival benefit as a salvage therapy for colorectal cancer; however, its starting dose has been controversial in recent studies. Therefore, we conducted a prospective study on the efficacy and safety of the dose reduction of regorafenib to 120 mg. Patients received 120 mg regorafenib once per day for 3 weeks, followed by a 1-week off-treatment period.

The patient presented to our hospital because of an enlarged appendix noted by contrast-enhanced CT performed for hematuria. Contrast-enhanced CT showed that the appendix had swollen to 10 mm and mucus had accumulated inside, which had no evidence of obvious malignancy.
