Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of patients who report improvement in quality of life (QOL) related to urinary status after undergoing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) for localized prostate cancer.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the patients who underwent RARP between May 2010 and May 2021 at our institution and were preoperatively unsatisfied with their urinary status. Patients were grouped as Group 1 (improved patients: "satisfied" with urinary status based on international prostate symptom score QOL [IPSS-QOL] = 0-2 at 12 months after RARP) and Group 2 (unimproved group: "unsatisfied"-IPSS-QOL 3-6).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of mitochondrial genetic variants in the development of bipolar disorder (BD), schizophrenia (SZ), and psychotic disorders (PSY) in a Japanese population, highlighting that previous research primarily focused on individuals of European ancestry.
  • Using quality control methods, researchers analyzed 45 genetic variants in 420 participants (BD patients, SZ patients, and healthy controls) to identify associations with the disorders.
  • Four specific variants showed significant associations with BD and PSY, particularly the rs200044200 variant, which was found only in BD patients, suggesting mitochondrial dysfunction may play a role in the pathogenesis of these disorders.

By using the kicked Harper model, the effect of dynamical perturbations to the localized and ballistic phases in quasiperiodic lattice systems is investigated. The transition from the localized phase to diffusive phase via a critical subdiffusion t^{α} (t is time) with 0<α<1 is observed. In addition, we confirm the existence of the transition from the ballistic phase to the diffusive phase via a critical superdiffusion with 1<α<2.

Background: Phenotyping analysis that includes time course is useful for understanding the mechanisms and clinical management of postoperative delirium. However, postoperative delirium has not been fully phenotyped. Hypothesis-free categorization of heterogeneous symptoms may be useful for understanding the mechanisms underlying delirium, although evidence is currently lacking.

Immunotherapies that target programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) signals are standard therapies for advanced-stage lung cancer, and the expression of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) in cancer tissue predicts immunotherapy efficacy. Although programmed death-ligand 2 (PD-L2) is expressed in cancer cells and macrophages, similar to PD-L1, its significance in lung cancer is unclear. Double immunohistochemistry analyses using anti-PD-L2 and anti-PU.

Ion hydration in aqueous solutions plays a paramount role in many fields. Despite many studies on ion hydration, the nature of ion hydration is not consistently understood at the molecular level. Combining neutron scattering (NS), wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), and molecular dynamics (MD), we quantify the ionic hydration degree (hydration ability) systematically for a series of alkali metal and halide ions based on static and dynamic hydration numbers.

The exceptional properties of liquid water such as thermodynamic, physical, and dielectric anomalies originate mostly from the hydrogen-bond networks of water molecules. The structural and dynamic properties of the hydrogen-bond networks have a significant impact on many biological and chemical processes in aqueous systems. In particular, the properties of interfacial water molecules with termination of the network at a solid surface are crucial to understanding the role of water in heterogeneous reactions.

Background: Urothelial carcinoma (UC) is a common type of human cancer and, although urine cytology is a useful method for identifying high-grade UC (HGUC), its ability to diagnose low-grade UC (LGUC) is limited. The authors previously reported that annexin A10 (ANXA10) expression was strongly linked to both papillary and early stage LGUC and was inversely correlated with p53 expression in upper tract UC (UTUC) and bladder UC. However, it remains largely unknown whether ANXA10 is useful as a diagnostic marker for urine cytology.

The mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) plays an essential role in energy production by inducing oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) to drive numerous biochemical processes in eukaryotic cells. Disorders of ETC and OXPHOS systems are associated with mitochondria- and metabolism-related diseases, including cancers; thus, a comprehensive understanding of the regulatory mechanisms of ETC and OXPHOS systems is required. Recent studies have indicated that noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) play key roles in mitochondrial functions; in particular, some ncRNAs have been shown to modulate ETC and OXPHOS systems.

Aging is closely associated with the increased morbidity and mortality of ischemic cardiovascular disease, at least partially through impaired angiogenic capacity. Endothelial cells (ECs) play a crucial role in angiogenesis, and their angiogenic capacity declines during aging. Spermidine is a naturally occurring polyamine, and its dietary supplementation has exhibited distinct anti-aging and healthy lifespan-extending effects in various species such as yeast, worms, flies, and mice.
