Brazilian Propolis Intake Decreases Body Fat Mass and Oxidative Stress in Community-Dwelling Elderly Females: A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of Brazilian propolis on body fat mass and levels of adiponectin and reactive oxygen species among community-dwelling elderly females. This was a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial. Altogether, 78 females aged 66-84 years were randomly assigned to the propolis (PRO; = 39) or placebo (PLA; = 39) group.

Venous Stent Placement for Malignant Vena Cava Syndrome in a Patient with Liposarcoma.

BACKGROUND Reports of venous stenting for inferior vena cava (IVC) syndrome (IVCS) due to sarcoma are limited, and the treatment's efficacy and safety are not clear. CASE REPORT A 36-year-old woman with myxoid liposarcoma was admitted to the Department of Respiratory Medicine for treatment of bilateral lower-leg edema and to be evaluated for acute liver dysfunction. She was 13 years old when she was diagnosed with myxoid liposarcoma.

Plasmon Effect of Ag Nanoparticles on TiO/rGO Nanostructures for Enhanced Energy Harvesting and Environmental Remediation.

We report Ag nanoparticles infused with mesosphere TiO/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheet (TiO/rGO/Ag) hybrid nanostructures have been successfully fabricated using a series of solution process synthesis routes and an in-situ growth method. The prepared hybrid nanostructure is utilized for the fabrication of photovoltaic cells and the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. The photovoltaic characteristics of a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) device with plasmonic hybrid nanostructure (TiO/rGO/Ag) photoanode achieved a highest short-circuit current density () of 16.

Melanin Synthesis Inhibition Activity of Compounds Isolated from Bamboo Shoot Skin ().

This study targets the evaluation of melanin synthesis inhibition activity of the bamboo shoot skin as agro-waste. The total methanolic extract of bamboo peel extract was evaluated for its skin protective effects via measuring its melanin inhibitory activity and its suppression activity on the expression of tyrosinase mRNA levels. Results showed that bamboo peel extract has a good ability for the inhibition of melanin synthesis so further studies were performed for the isolation of its constituents.

Factors related to white thrombi in acute ischemic stroke in cancer patients.

Objectives: Thrombi in cerebral large vessel occlusion associated with active cancer are often fibrin and platelet-rich white thrombi. However, evaluating the thrombus composition in a short time before thrombectomy is often ineffective. We sought to determine factors related to white thrombi in acute ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion in cancer patients.

Validation study for in vitro skin irritation test using reconstructed human skin equivalents constructed by layer-by-layer cell coating technology.

The aim of this study is to validate an in vitro skin irritation test (SIT) using three-dimensional reconstructed human epidermal (RhE) skin equivalents prepared by layer-by-layer (LbL) method (LbL-3D Skin) in a series of interlaboratory studies. The goal of these validation studies is to evaluate the ability of this in vitro test to reliably discriminate skin irritant from nonirritant chemicals, as defined by OECD and UN GHS. This me-too validation study is to assess the within- and between-laboratory reproducibility, as well as the predictive capacity, of the LbL-3D Skin SIT in accordance with performance standards for OECD TG 439.

Study of the inclusion complexes formed between 4-phenylbutyrate and α-, β- and γ-cyclodextrin in solution and evaluation on their taste-masking properties.

Objectives: 4-Phenylbutyrate (PB), which is used in the management of urea cycle disorders, has an unpleasant taste leading to poor patient compliance. Existing PB formulations though helpful, have some limitations in their use. This study reports on attempts to mask this unpleasant taste by complexing PB with cyclodextrins (CDs) to improve patient compliance.

Addition of a free carbene to a solution of Fe(CO)Br yielded an octahedral, diamagnetic and cationic iron(II) complex [Fe(1,2,3-triazolylidene)(CO)Br]. Pyrolysis of the dicarbonyl complex eliminated the two CO ligands to form a paramagnetic four-coordinate complex.

Long-term effect of photodynamic therapy on oral squamous cell carcinoma and epithelial dysplasia.

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) treatment consists mainly of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, alone or in combination. Epithelial dysplasia (ED) is also treated with surgery. However, these treatments can induce functional and/or aesthetic disturbances.

A novel murine model of autoimmune dysautonomia by α3 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor immunization.

We aimed to establish a novel murine model of autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathy (AAG), which represents autoimmune dysautonomia, associated with MHC class II to understand its pathomechanism and the pathogenicity of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) antibodies. The amino acid sequence of the mouse nAChRα3 protein was analyzed using an epitope prediction tool to predict the possible MHC class II binding mouse nAChRα3 peptides. We focused on two nAChRα3 peptides in the extracellular region, and experimental AAG (EAAG) was induced by immunization of C57BL/6 mice with these two different peptides.

Region-based SVD processing of high-frequency ultrafast ultrasound to visualize cutaneous vascular networks.

Observing alterations in cutaneous vasculature in response to any disease or pathology is considered as a potential diagnostic marker in the progression and cure of a disease. To observe skin morphologies and tissue conditions, high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) has been used in dermatology, although its ability to selectively visualize micro-vessels is limited due to insufficient Doppler sensitivity to peripheral slow-speed blood flow. In recent studies, this issue has been improved by increasing the sensitivity of Doppler imaging to slow flow, leveraging advanced cutter filtering approaches based on singular value decomposition (SVD) techniques that aid to effectively extract flow signals overlapped with tissue echo signals.

Safety and efficacy of osimertinib rechallenge or continuation after pneumonitis: A multicentre retrospective cohort study.

Introduction: Although osimertinib is a standard first-line treatment for patients with advanced-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations, the incidence rate of pneumonitis associated with osimertinib is high. However, there are few reports about the safety and efficacy of osimertinib rechallenge after the development of pneumonitis.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective multicentre cohort study of consecutive patients who developed pneumonitis associated with osimertinib as a first-line and received osimertinib rechallenge.

An instance of homicide by electrocution with hand-made electrode plates.

Homicide by electrocution is rare in forensics, and the identification of the cause of death can be quite difficult when the electric device is removed from the scene. We present an instance where the police were unsure of homicide in the initial investigation. The offender used hand-made electrode plates for electrocution, which produced unique electric marks different from those produced by common electric devices such as electric wires.

The design and construction of state-of-the-art wearable thermoelectric materials are important for the development of self-powered wearable thermoelectric generators (WTEGs). Molybdenum disulfide (MoS) has been reported as a noteworthy thermoelectric (TE) material because of its large intrinsic bandgap and high carrier mobility. In this work, Cu-doped two-dimensional layered MoS nanosheets were grown on carbon fabric (CF) via a hydrothermal method.

Shift-Work Schedule Intervention for Extending Restart Breaks after Consecutive Night Shifts: A Non-randomized Controlled Cross-Over Study.

More knowledge is required to determine the optimal shiftwork schedule to reduce the harmful effects of short restart breaks between shifts. This 5-month intervention study aimed to examine the effectiveness of extended restart breaks from 31 h to 55 h after consecutive night shifts by considering the characteristics of the circadian rhythm to mitigate fatigue and sleep among 30 shift-working nurses. Subjective and objective variables, such as vital exhaustion, distress, hair cortisol, salivary C-reactive protein, and sleep mattress sensor sensation, were repeatedly measured to examine the differences between the intervention and control conditions.

A 44-year-old woman who was quarantined for 5 days after the diagnosis of coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) was transferred to our hospital with the complaint of chest pain. The patient was unvaccinated. Electrocardiography revealed ST elevation in the lateral leads.

Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy targeting a MAGE A4 peptide and HLA-A*02:01 complex for unresectable advanced or recurrent solid cancer: protocol for a multi-institutional phase 1 clinical trial.

Introduction: Adoptive cell transfer of genetically engineered T cells is a promising treatment for malignancies; however, there are few ideal cancer antigens expressed on the cell surface, and the development of chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR-T cells) for solid tumour treatment has been slow. CAR-T cells, which recognise major histocompatibility complex and peptide complexes presented on the cell surface, can be used to target not only cell surface antigens but also intracellular antigens. We have developed a CAR-T-cell product that recognises the complex of HLA-A*02:01 and an epitope of the MAGE-A4 antigen equipped with a novel signalling domain of human GITR (investigational product code: MU-MA402C) based on preclinical studies.

Effects of Model-Based Iterative Reconstruction in Low-Dose Paranasal Computed Tomography: A Comparison with Filtered Back Projection and Hybrid Iterative Reconstruction.

Iterative reconstruction (IR) improves image quality compared with filtered back projection (FBP). This study investigated the usefulness of model-based IR (forward-projected model-based iterative reconstruction solution [FIRST]) in comparison with FBP and hybrid IR (adaptive iterative dose reduction three-dimensional processing [AIDR 3D]) in low-dose paranasal CT. Twenty-four patients with paranasal sinusitis who underwent standard-dose CT (120 kV) and low-dose CT (100 kV) scanning before and after medical treatment were enrolled.

Comparison of wireless and wired alarm devices for nocturnal enuresis treatment.

Background: In monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (MNE) treatment, enuretic alarm devices are the first recommended treatment option. This study aimed to compare retrospectively the effectiveness of wearable wireless and wired alarm devices for MNE treatment in children aged 6-14 years.

Methods: All children aged 6-16 with MNE who underwent alarm therapy as outpatients were included.

Short-term aneurysm formation and rupture due to septic embolism diagnosed with a thrombus retrieved from another occluded artery.

Background: In rare cases, septic embolism is diagnosed on the basis of pathological findings of retrieved thrombi. Infected aneurysms can rapidly form and rupture after septic embolism, leading to a poor prognosis. We report a case of subcortical hemorrhage due to an infected aneurysm forming shortly after septic embolism in the left anterior cerebral artery.

Intra-Articular Injections of the Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Suppress Progression of a Mouse Traumatic Knee Osteoarthritis Model.

Objective: This study aimed to determine whether the intra-articular injection of human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) protects against the progression of murine post-traumatic osteoarthritis.

Design: ADSCs were isolated from human abdomen or buttock adipose tissues. In study, ADSCs conditioned medium was added to human chondrocytes pre-treated with interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and resultant gene expression of target inflammatory genes was measured by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction.

Risk Factors for Delayed Diagnosis of Acute Cholecystitis among Rural Older Patients: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background and objectives: Acute cholecystitis causes acute abdominal pain and may necessitate emergency surgery or intensive antibiotic therapy and percutaneous drainage, depending on the patient’s condition. The symptoms of acute cholecystitis in older patients may be atypical and difficult to diagnose, causing delayed treatment. Clarifying the risk factors for delayed diagnosis among older patients could lead to early diagnosis and treatment of acute cholecystitis.

Noble gases and nitrogen in samples of asteroid Ryugu record its volatile sources and recent surface evolution.

The near-Earth carbonaceous asteroid (162173) Ryugu is expected to contain volatile chemical species that could provide information on the origin of Earth's volatiles. Samples of Ryugu were retrieved by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. We measured noble gas and nitrogen isotopes in Ryugu samples and found that they are dominated by presolar and primordial components, incorporated during Solar System formation.
