The SAW waveguide technique was used to form a novel reflector-filter for the realization of compact IF filters in CDMA handsets. The reflector-filter design is an attractive technique to obtain characteristics with steep skirts in a short device length, because the SAW propagation path is folded and the frequency response is synthesized by utilizing both IDT and reflector responses. In this paper, we propose a new reflector-filter structure using a SAW waveguide directional coupler.

This paper describes the double mode surface acoustic wave (DMS) filter design techniques for achieving the ultra-steep cut-off characteristics and low insertion loss required for the Rx filter in the personal communications services (PCS) duplexer. Simulations demonstrate that the optimal combination of the additional common ground inductance Lg and the coupling capacitance Cc between the input and output terminals of the DMS filters drastically enhances the skirt steepness and attenuation for the lower frequency side of the passband. Based on this result, we propose a novel DMS filter structure that utilizes the parasitic reactance generated in bonding wires and interdigital transducer (IDT) busbars as Lg and Ce, respectively.

This paper discusses side acoustic radiation in leaky surface acoustic wave (LSAW) resonators on rotated Y-cut lithium tantalite substrates. The mechanism behind side radiation, which causes a large insertion loss, is analyzed by using the scalar potential theory. This analysis reveals that side radiation occurs when the guiding condition is not satisfied, and the LSAW most strongly radiates at the frequency in which the LSAW velocities in the grating and busbar regions approximately correspond to each other.

The paper describes how the characteristics of leaky surface acoustic wave (LSAW) propagation depend on the thickness of Al grating electrodes on rotated Y-X LiTaO3. It is shown that the propagation loss arising from leaky nature changes parabolically with both the grating electrode thickness and rotation angle and becomes zero when electrode thickness and rotation angle are properly determined. This means that even when thick grating electrodes are needed in device design, zero propagation loss is always realized by properly determining the rotation angle.

This paper describes a method for widening the passband of transversely coupled resonator filters (TCF) using only the fundamental symmetric and antisymmetric modes. The coupling of modes analysis in the transverse direction is applied to the TCF design to investigate the passband width. As a result, it is found that the passband width can be increased by making the surface acoustic wave (SAW) velocity difference between the interdigital transducer (IDT) region and the resonator gap region smaller.
