We determined whether a carbohydrate antigen in serum, CA19-9, serves as a marker for embryonal carcinoma. Serum CA19-9 was serially measured in 18 male patients with a germ cell tumor. Five of 8 patients with an embryonal carcinoma had an elevated serum CA19-9.

We constructed a continent, catheterizable urinary conduit using a smooth muscle graft in dogs. One end of an isolated vascularized ileal segment was anastomosed to the bladder dome, and the other end was opened in the abdominal wall. The ileal conduit was tightly encircled with a free seromuscular flap of the ileum in 6 dogs and with a similar flap of colon in 6 other dogs.

We reviewed 12 patients who had undergone curative or non-curative nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma invading adjacent organs (stage T4). 83 patients with renal cell carcinoma confined within the perirenal fascia (T1-T3) who had undergone nephrectomy served as controls. Of the 12 patients with T4 tumor 6 had undergone simultaneous excision of involved adjacent organs (hemicolectomy in 4, resection of the tail of pancreas in 5, splenectomy in 2).

Six dogs underwent bladder augmentation using an isolated flap of the body of the stomach after a supratrigonal cystectomy. Each dog was followed for six months with periodic determinations of urine pH, blood chemistry, cystometry and cystography. Postoperatively, urine pH decreased markedly after a meal in most dogs.

We constructed a continent, catheterizable urinary valve from a gastric segment in 7 dogs. A vascularized gastric segment was isolated from the greater curvature and was tubularized. A cuff was made at the distal end of the tube.

Histologically, we examined a dysplastic kidney obtained from a patient with an ectopic ureter opening into the seminal tract. The dysplastic kidney did not have any normal renal tissue or typical primitive ducts but epididymis- and prostate-like ducts. The last ducts contained degenerating spermatozoa in the lumen.

Forty patients with carcinoma in situ of the bladder were reviewed. They included 15 patients with primary carcinoma in situ, 8 with secondary carcinoma in situ and 17 with concurrent carcinoma in situ. Twenty-one (66%) of 32 patients with primary or concurrent carcinoma in situ complained of urinary frequency and pain on urination, whereas no patients with secondary carcinoma in situ complained of such symptoms.
