Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging, life-threatening tick-borne viral hemorrhagic fever caused by SFTS virus (SFTSV). Transient appearance of plasmablastic lymphocytes in the peripheral blood of SFTS cases has been reported; however, the pathological significance of this transient burst in peripheral blood plasmablastic lymphocytes is unclear. Here, we show that SFTSV infection of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells in vitro induced propagation of atypical lymphocytes.

Background: Although fungi are found relatively easily by microscopic examination of pathological samples, identification of fungal genus and species in pathological samples is not easy because the morphological features of fungi are similar among genera and species.

Objectives: A multiple real-time PCR was developed for identification of fungal genus/species, and morphological characterizations of fungi were analysed in pathological samples.

Patients/methods: Seventy-five formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples morphologically proven to contain any fungus were examined.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is still extremely difficult to cure, and new therapeutic drugs are needed. We recently found that integrin β7 is constitutively activated in MM cells, and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells targeting activated integrin β7 have a significant anti-MM effect. In this study, we performed flow cytometry analysis of the expression of activated integrin β7 in bone marrow cells from 137 symptomatic MM patients.

Background: The International Myeloma Working Group response criteria require two consecutive assessments of paraprotein levels. We conducted an exploratory analysis to evaluate whether a single response assessment could be a substitute for the International Myeloma Working Group criteria using data from JCOG1105, a randomized phase II study on melphalan, prednisolone and bortezomib.

Methods: Of 91 patients with transplant-ineligible newly diagnosed multiple myeloma, 79 patients were included.

We herein report the case of a 19-year-old female with a transverse discrepancy, skeletal Class II malocclusion, severe crowding with concerns of classic-type Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), aesthetics problems and functional problems. The main characteristics of classic EDS are loose-jointedness and fragile, easily bruised skin that heals with peculiar "cigarette-paper" scars. The anteroposterior and transverse skeletal discrepancies can generally be resolved by maxilla repositioning and mandibular advancement surgery following pre-surgical orthodontic treatment.

The unfolded protein response (UPR) controls protein homeostasis through transcriptional and translational regulation. However, dysregulated UPR signaling has been associated with the pathogenesis of many human diseases. Therefore, the compounds modulating UPR may provide molecular insights for these pathologies in the context of UPR.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify risk factors for developing radiolucent lines (RLLs) around the acetabular component in patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty (THA) using an interface bioactive bone cement technique, focusing on the first year post-surgery and longer-term impacts at five and ten years.
  • A review of 980 primary cemented THAs revealed that 27.2% of patients exhibited RLLs one year after surgery, with specific factors like atrophic osteoarthritis and smaller head diameters significantly increasing the risk, while structural bone grafts and proper hip center location reduced it.
  • Long-term analysis showed a high survival rate of acetabular components over ten years, with no

The objective was to evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of tacrolimus monotherapy in myasthenia gravis (MG) patients. Immunosuppressive drug-naïve MG patients were administered tacrolimus, followed by thymectomy in some of the cases according to the clinical guideline for MG. Additional aggressive immunosuppressive therapies were allowed if the patients without thymectomy did not achieve minimal manifestation (MM) or better status after 3 weeks of tacrolimus administration or in the thymectomized patients by 1-2 weeks after the operation (i.

Genomic information is encoded on long strands of DNA, which are folded into chromatin and stored in a tiny nucleus. Nuclear chromatin is a negatively charged polymer composed of DNA, histones, and various nonhistone proteins. Because of its highly charged nature, chromatin structure varies greatly depending on the surrounding environment (e.

Trifluridine/tipiracil (TAS-102) is an important chemotherapeutic agent recommended by the Japanese guidelines as third- or fourth-line treatment for colorectal cancer. Some studies have reported that administration of TAS-102 concomitant with bevacizumab prolongs progression-free and overall survival in colorectal cancer. We describe 2 patients treated with a chemotherapeutic regimen comprising TAS-102 concomitant with bevacizumab for recurrent colorectal cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • Multiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable cancer that often becomes resistant to immunomodulatory drugs (IMiDs), impacting patient prognosis; genetic changes in the Cereblon (CRBN) gene play a crucial role in this resistance.
  • Researchers created drug-resistant MM cell lines to study how histone deacetylase (HDAC) and Akt inhibitors can combat this resistance, potentially enhancing the effectiveness of immunotherapy.
  • The study found that HDAC inhibitors not only suppressed the growth of resistant MM cells but also increased the effectiveness of therapeutic antibodies by boosting natural killer cell activity, while also reducing the levels of a key protein involved in cancer cell growth.
