Objective: Despite recent advances in the treatment of recurrent ovarian cancer, little evidence exists describing the benefit of third- line chemotherapy. The present authors previously reported that the treatment-free interval (TFI) after second-line chemotherapy may predict a survival benefit of third-line chemotherapy, however the length of TFI was uncertain due to limited cases. Stress is a major factor in the development of major depressive disorder (MDD), but few studies have assessed individual risk based on pre-stress behavioral and cognitive traits. To address this issue, we employed appetitive instrumental lever pressing with a progressive ratio (PR) schedule to assess these traits in experimentally naïve Sprague-Dawley rats. Based on four distinct traits that were identified by hierarchical cluster analysis, the animals were classified into the corresponding four subgroups (Low Motivation, Quick Learner, Slow Learner, and Hypermotivation), and exposed to chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) before monitoring their post-stress responses for 4 weeks.

A patient started anticoagulation for secondary prevention of stroke, achieving a prothrombin time-international normalized ratio within the optimal therapeutic range. The patient subsequently complained of pain in the left thigh on hospital day 25, and ultrasonography showed a large intramuscular hematoma in the left hamstring. The intramuscular hematoma gradually reduced without surgical intervention.

The ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) and amygdala have critical roles in the generation and regulation of unpleasant emotions, and in this study the dynamic neural basis of unpleasant emotion processing was elucidated by using paired-samples permutation t-tests to identify the timing of emotional discrimination in various brain regions. We recorded the temporal dynamics of blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signals in those brain regions during the viewing of unpleasant pictures by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with high temporal resolution, and we compared the time course of the signal within the volume of interest (VOI) across emotional conditions. Results show that emotional discrimination in the right amygdala precedes that in the left amygdala and that emotional discrimination in both those regions precedes that in the right anterior VLPFC.

For safe and efficient sonothrombolysis therapies, accurate estimation of ultrasound transmittance through the human skull is essential. The present study clarifies uncertainty surrounding this transmittance and experimentally verifies the equalization of transmittance through the modulation of ultrasound frequency. By changing three factors (ultrasound frequency, the thickness of a bone-phantom plate, and the distance between a transducer and a bone-phantom plate), we measured the intensity of ultrasound passing through the plate.

To address the role of cancer-stroma interactions, we performed gene expression profiling of both cancer and stroma, using matching samples of endometrial cancer (EC), and analyzed the relationship between the gene expression pattern and prognosis in EC. Sixty EC cases were included in this study (38 nonrecurrent and 22 recurrent).
