Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluated the long-term outcomes of patients with acute aortic dissection (AD) who had a patent false lumen, indicating that even without immediate complications, there is a risk for future events.
  • Researchers assessed various anatomical and flow characteristics using MRI and CT scans and followed 131 patients over an average of 8 years, discovering significant predictors of aortic-related events.
  • Key findings revealed that high systolic flow and significant diastolic retrograde flow in the false lumen, along with larger aortic diameter, were strong risk factors, suggesting that patients with these indicators may benefit from more proactive treatment approaches.

Objectives: To determine the risk of mortality and need for aortic valve replacement (AVR) in patients with low-flow low-gradient (LFLG) aortic stenosis (AS).

Methods: A longitudinal multicentre study including consecutive patients with severe AS (aortic valve area [AVA] < 1.0 cm) and normal left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF).

Ascending aorta diameters have important clinical value in the diagnosis, follow-up, and surgical indication of many aortic diseases. However, there is no uniformity among experts regarding ascending aorta diameter quantification by echocardiography. The aim of this study was to compare maximum aortic root and ascending aorta diameters determined by the diastolic leading edge (DLE) and the systolic inner edge (SIE) conventions in adult and pediatric patients with inherited cardiovascular diseases.

In acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) may underestimate segmental functional recovery. We evaluated the predictive value of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) feature-tracking (FT) for functional recovery and whether it incremented the value of LGE compared to low-dose dobutamine stress echocardiography (LDDSE) and speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE). Eighty patients underwent LDDSE and CMR within 5-7 days after STEMI and segmental functional recovery was defined as improvement in wall-motion at 6-months CMR.

Background: Chronic total occlusion (CTO) is common among patients with coronary artery disease. Very few studies have focused on outcomes of patients with CTO and reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), according to treatment applied. The aim of our study was to determine the potential influence of the selected treatment on the prognosis in patients with CTO associated with reduced LVEF.

Objective: Detection of subclinical cardiovascular disease (CVD) has significant impact on the management of type 2 diabetes. We examined whether the assessment of diabetic retinopathy (DR) is useful for identifying patients at a higher risk of having silent CVD.

Research Design And Methods: Prospective case-control study comprising 200 type 2 diabetic subjects without history of clinical CVD and 60 age-matched non-diabetic subjects.

Objective: To assess the relationship between regional wall shear stress (WSS) and oscillatory shear index (OSI) and aortic dilation in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). Approach and Results: Forty-six consecutive patients with BAV (63% with right-left-coronary-cusp fusion, aortic diameter ≤ 45 mm and no severe valvular disease) and 44 healthy volunteers were studied by time-resolved 3-dimensional phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging. WSS and OSI were quantified at different levels of the ascending aorta and the aortic arch, and regional WSS and OSI maps were obtained.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to evaluate obstetric outcomes in women with heart disease and determine whether current multidisciplinary management approaches adversely affect the mother, the neonate, or both. Also to compare the accuracy of several risk scores (RS) including the modified World Health Organization classification (mWHO) and CARPREG to predict obstetric and neonatal complications and to study the addition value of Uteroplacental-Doppler flow (UDF) parameters to predict obstetric complications.

Methods: A prospective cohort study examined outcomes in women with heart disease (HD), the majority of whom had corrective surgery and delivered between January 2007 and March 2012.

Aims: To assess the effectiveness of different treatment strategies in patients with non-obstructive prosthetic valve thrombosis (NOPVT) during hospitalization and long-term follow-up.

Methods: NOPVT was diagnosed by transesophageal echocardiography. Resolution was defined as the disappearance or reduction of the thrombus under anticoagulation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effects of thrombus aspiration (TA) on outcomes for STEMI patients in a real-world setting.
  • 542 STEMI patients were enrolled, with 456 patients ultimately analyzed and divided into TA (156 patients) and non-TA (300 patients) groups based on whether they received the treatment.
  • Patients in the TA group showed fewer instances of multivessel disease, higher initial blood flow, and achieved better stenting outcomes, including fewer and larger stents being used compared to the non-TA group.
  • The conclusion suggests that TA leads to more effective procedures, requiring shorter and fewer stents per lesion with better overall results.

Objectives: The spectrum of patients with 'angina and normal coronary arteries' ranges from severe vasospasm to atypical chest pain. Among those with typical angina, however, little is known about similarities in the clinical profile and circadian presentation between typical nonvasospastic angina and normal coronary arteries (tANCA) and vasospastic angina (VA).

Materials And Methods: Clinical, ECG, and angiographic features as well as the circadian characteristics of angina were compared between 384 tANCA and 273 VA patients.

The incidence of cardiac events in patients with variant angina pectoris without significant coronary stenosis and ST-segment elevation was analyzed during a 12-year follow-up period in 273 consecutive patients (82% men) admitted from 1986 through 2010. Among the 252 patients who underwent electrocardiography during pain, 205 had ST-segment elevation (82%) and 45 had ST-segment depression (18%). During index hospitalization, angina occurred in 179 patients (66%), ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation in 28 (10%), and complete atrioventricular block in 3 (1%), but there were no deaths or myocardial infarctions (MIs).

Introduction And Objectives: Percutaneous revascularization of chronic total coronary artery occlusion is a technical challenge and has a lower success rate than other angioplasty procedures. Identification of predictors of failure could lead to better selection of patients with the greatest possibility of success. In this study, we investigate the multidetector computed tomography features associated with failure of percutaneous treatment for chronic total coronary occlusion.

Objectives: To retrospectively analyze the clinical outcome of a totally biological composite stentless aortic valved conduit (No-React® BioConduit) implanted using the Bentall procedure over ten years in a single centre.

Methods: Between 27/10/99 and 19/01/08, the No-React® BioConduit composite graft was implanted in 67 patients. Data on these patients were collected from the in-hospital database, from patient notes and from questionnaires.

Background And Objective: To analyze the use of reperfusion therapy in patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in Catalonia in a registry performed in 2006 (IAM CAT III) and its comparison with 2 previous registries

Patients And Methods: Frequency of reperfusion therapy and time intervals between symptom onset - reperfusion therapy were the principal variables investigated. The IAM CAT I (June-December 2000) included 1,450 patients, the IAM CAT II (October 2002-April 2003) 1,386, and the IAM CAT III (October-December 2006) 367.

Results: The proportion of patients treated with reperfusion increased progressively (72%, 79% and 81%) as the use of primary angioplasty (5%, 10% and 33%).

Brugada syndrome is characterized by the presence of right bundle branch block on electrocardiography and by ST-segment elevation in the right precordial leads (V1-V3), by the absence of structural cardiac abnormalities, and by episodes of syncope or sudden death. On occasion, diagnosis is made difficult by temporary normalization of the ECG. The condition can be unmasked by potent sodium channel blockers, such as flecainide.
