- Monkeypox (MPX) is a rare viral disease similar to smallpox, with sporadic outbreaks in Nigeria since 2017, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic impacting disease monitoring.
- This study aimed to enhance the surveillance of MPX in three priority states (Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa) by training community volunteers to actively search for cases over a three-month period.
- The enhanced surveillance led to the identification of 25 suspected MPX cases, with 3 confirmed positives, demonstrating that better monitoring can significantly improve reporting and response to the disease in affected areas.
Background: A lot has been documented about the pathophysiology and clinical presentation of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We compared the clinical features of real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase-chain-reaction (RT-PCR) confirmed COVID-19 positive and negative patients admitted in Lagos State.
Methods: Medical records of all patients admitted in 15 isolation centres across Lagos state between 27 February 2020 and 30 September 2020, were abstracted and reviewed.
Background: Lassa fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic disease endemic in Nigeria. The 2018 Lassa fever outbreak in Nigeria was unprecedented, with 8% of all cases occurring among healthcare workers (HCWs). A disproportionately high number of these infections occurred in HCWs working in a tertiary health facility in Nigeria.
