In this review, two cases of testicular tuberculosis (TB) are presented, and another 58 cases published in PubMed between January 1, 2012, and July 31, 2023, are reviewed. Testicular TB remains a disease mainly of the developing world, with one notable exception - the infections caused as a result of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin infusion immunotherapy for bladder cancer. Its clinical course is subacute; however, it might get disseminated and become life-threatening; therefore, prompt diagnosis is very important.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed COVID-19 patients in Greece to compare baseline characteristics and mortality predictors during the Delta and Omicron variant waves.
  • A total of 979 patients were included, with key findings showing Delta patients were younger, required longer hospital stays, and had higher levels of specific biomarkers compared to Omicron patients.
  • Despite these differences, there was no significant disparity in mortality risk or ICU admissions between the two groups; factors such as age and certain medical conditions were identified as independent mortality predictors for the Delta patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the circadian patterns of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and atrial fibrillation (AF) in diabetic patients within a Mediterranean country, examining 178 patients aged 67.7 on average.
  • Findings indicate that AMI occurs more frequently during midnight hours (21:00-23:59) and AF peaks around noon (12:00-14:59) among diabetic patients.
  • The results suggest that factors like autonomic nervous system changes, glycemic variations, and treatment timing may influence these patterns, calling for more research to guide potential therapeutic strategies.

Background: The incidence of diabetes mellitus (DM) is ever-increasing and along with its microvascular and macrovascular complications, it is associated with a high morbidity and mortality burden globally. Major components of diabetes pathophysiology include glucotoxicity, lipotoxicity and insulin resistance, disturbing the vascular wall integrity and leading to endothelial dysfunction and platelet hyper aggregation.

Objective: This review aims to identify and summarize the effect of novel anti-diabetic agents (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, sodium-glucose co-transporter -2 inhibitors) on endothelial (EF) and platelet function (PF) and evaluate the consistency with the results of cardiovascular outcomes studies.

Four homologous and five heterologous gene-specific sequences have been mapped by in situ hybridization on the salivary gland polytene chromosomes of the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae. The nine genes were dispersed on four of the five autosomal chromosomes, thus enriching the available set of chromosome landmarks for this major agricultural pest. Present data further supports the proposed chromosome homologies among B.

The olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae, has a diploid set of 2n = 12 chromosomes including a pair of sex chromosomes, XX in females and XY in males, but polytene nuclei show only five polytene chromosomes, obviously formed by five autosome pairs. Here we examined the fate of the sex chromosomes in the polytene complements of this species using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with the X and Y chromosome-derived probes, prepared by laser microdissection of the respective chromosomes from mitotic metaphases. Specificity of the probes was verified by FISH in preparations of mitotic chromosomes.

The American eastern cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis cingulata, a pest of cherries in the western hemisphere, invaded Europe in 1983, and since then dispersed to several European countries. Information on the genetics and cytogenetics of this pest is very scarce. The mitotic karyotype and detailed photographic maps of the salivary gland polytene chromosomes of R.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the effectiveness and toxicity of the insecticides spinosad and deltamethrin on the olive fly (Bactrocera oleae) and fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster).
  • Results showed both insecticides were very effective against B. oleae, with spinosad being significantly more toxic to D. melanogaster compared to deltamethrin.
  • The research found no genotoxic effects from either pesticide under the conditions tested, implying a relatively safe profile for these insecticides in pest management.
