Article Synopsis
  • PFAS are man-made chemicals found in many industries that pose environmental and public health risks, but monitoring them in Africa is hindered by a lack of mass spectrometry (MS) instruments.
  • The review highlights that few African countries have adequate access to MS, leading to significant underreporting of PFAS data and related health issues.
  • To improve monitoring efforts, the study calls for financial support for MS instruments, the establishment of regional centers of excellence, and investment in training programs for effective PFAS management.

Antibiotic resistance in typhoid fever poses a critical public health problem due to the emergence of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) , resulting in prolonged illness and treatment failure. is the most predominant among all serotypes and can acquire resistance. The emergence of XDR in various regions globally, particularly Pakistan, presents a concerning trend.

Rabies remains a significant public health challenge in Africa, primarily burdening impoverished rural communities, with children and young adults being the most vulnerable. Achieving complete elimination in the continent by 2030 requires a coordinated effort hinged on the One Health concept, external support from international organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and the national governments of endemic countries. Here, we reviewed the various socio-economic and ecological factors influencing the spatial distribution and molecular epidemiology of the disease.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection that continues to pose a significant public health threat globally, including Nigeria. Here, we provided a review of dengue fever outbreaks in Nigeria from 1972 to 2023, examining the epidemiology, prevention strategies, challenges faced in combating the disease, and recommendations to mitigate its spread and transmission. We utilized scholarly databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar in writing this paper.

This comprehensive analysis examines the multifaceted impacts of population growth on public health in Nigeria. Drawing parallels with Omran's epidemiological transition model (that focuses on the intricate means that patterns of health and illness are changing, as well as the relationships that exist between these patterns and the sociological, demographic, and economic factors that influence them) and referencing experiences from Chile and Ceylon. The study highlights a substantial rise in Nigeria's population causing a double burden of infectious and non-communicable diseases, leading to higher morbidity, and mortality rates, increased healthcare costs, decreased productivity, and health inequalities, posing significant challenges to the country's healthcare system.

Objective: COVID-19 disrupted health service delivery and weakened global and national health systems. The objective of this study was to describe the changes in health service utilization in three local government areas (LGAs) in Nigeria and examine factors involved.

Methods: A cross-sectional mixed-methods approach was used.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of manual physiotherapy on clinical outcomes, morphology of plantar fascia (PF), thicknesses of calcaneal fat pad (CFP) and Kager's fat pad (KFP) with ultrasound imaging in plantar fasciitis (PFS) patients. Also, to evaluate the PF thickness, pain and foot functional outcomes among PFS phases.

Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted on 122 subjects divided into three groups: group A (40 patients with PFS) underwent manual physiotherapy, group B (42 patients with PFS) without any intervention and group C (40 healthy subjects) were matched by age, gender and BMI with each patient in group A and B.

Article Synopsis
  • - In high-income countries, premarital genetic counseling for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is common, but Nigeria lacks such a program, prompting a study to explore attitudes towards SCD screening.
  • - Focus group discussions revealed two main themes: differing perceptions of premarital screening among SCD patients versus the general public, and personal beliefs that deter people from seeking screening due to challenges and stigma.
  • - Key barriers to premarital testing include limited disease knowledge, inadequate testing facilities, transportation issues, and societal stigma, though there is still community interest in implementing a premarital genetic counseling program in Kano to improve health outcomes for SCD patients.

All over the world, people with sickle cell disease (an inherited condition) have premature deaths and preventable severe chronic complications, which considerably affect their quality of life, career progression, and financial status. In addition, these people are often affected by stigmatisation or structural racism, which can contribute to stress and poor mental health. Inequalities affecting people with sickle cell disease are also reflected in the distribution of the disease—mainly in sub-Saharan Africa, India, and the Caribbean—whereas interventions, clinical trials, and funding are mostly available in North America, Europe, and the Middle East.

Background And Aim: Poliovirus is a global health issue that affects children in different parts of the world. Despite the efforts of national, international, and nongovernmental organizations to eradicate the disease, it is re-emerging in Africa due to poor sanitation, vaccine hesitancy, new ways of transmission, and poor surveillance among others. Circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) is a major step in eradicating poliovirus and preventing outbreaks in developing countries.

Ischemic priapism is a common but underrecognized morbidity affecting about 33% of adult men with sickle cell disease (SCD). The onset of priapism occurs in the prepubertal period and tends to be recurrent with increasing age. Significantly, priapism is associated with an unrecognized high burden of mental duress and sexual dysfunctions.

Introduction: Plantar fasciitis (PFS) is described by an intense pain over medial tubercle of calcaneus, increased with the first step after waking up, after rest and during weightbearing activity. It is the most common cause of plantar heel pain in adults with the prevalence estimated 10% of the general population. Ultrasound imaging is commonly being used to measure the PF thickness, evaluate the efficacy of different treatments and a guide therapeutic technique in patients with PFS.

Despite the extraordinary and exceptional advances in drugs and vaccine development, sophisticated diagnostic facilities in health care settings, strategies in disease prevention and control, emerging and re-emerging infections are still the leading cause of death and suffering amongst human and animal populations with great impact on the world economy. Monkeypox is a viral disease with the potential to spread across the globe through international travel and movements of animals from endemic areas to susceptible populations. Monkeypox virus is an uncommon but endemic viral disease in Africa, but recent outbreaks occurred in Europe, the US, UK, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, and Italy.

We conducted one of the first prospective studies to test the hypothesis that the clinical history of priapism underestimates priapism incidence compared with a priapism pain diary. Eligibility criteria were men with sickle cell anemia (SCA) between 18 and 40 years of age who have had at least 3 episodes of priapism in the past 12 months. Seventy-one men with SCA completed the diary for at least 3 months.
