Herein, we present the case of a patient with recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who had paracaval lymph node (LN) metastases with an inferior vena cava (IVC) tumor thrombus after a hepatectomy. A 65-year-old man with chronic hepatitis B virus infection received an extended anterior segmentectomy because of two hepatic tumors, located in segments 7 and 8. Histological examination of both resected specimens showed mostly moderately differentiated HCC with some poorly differentiated areas, and liver cirrhosis (A2/F4).

Background: Small-for-size syndrome remains the greatest limiting factor of expanding segmental liver transplantation from living donors. Portal hyperperfusion is considered to substantially contribute to small-for-size syndrome. We investigated the impact of continuous portal infusion of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) on small-for-size grafts (SFSGs) in adult-to-adult living-donor liver transplantation (LDLT).

We have previously proven that the interspecies incompatibility of CD47 is responsible for in vitro phagocytosis of xenogeneic cells by host macrophages. Utilizing an in vivo model in the present study, we investigated whether genetically engineered expression of mouse CD47 in rat insulinoma cells (INS-1E) could inhibit macrophage-mediated xenograft rejection. INS-1E cells transfected with the pRc/CMV-mouse CD47 vector (mCD47-INS-1E) induced SIRPα-tyrosine phosphorylation in mouse macrophages in vitro, whereas cells transfected with the control vector (cont-INS-1E) did not.

Background: Folate receptor β (FRβ) is induced during macrophage activation. A recombinant immunotoxin consisting of the truncated Pseudomonas exotoxin A (PE38) conjugated to an anti-FRβ antibody (anti-FRβ-PE38) has been reported to kill activated macrophages in inflammatory diseases. To elucidate the effect of an immunotoxin targeting FRβ on atherosclerosis, we determined the presence of FRβ-expressing macrophages in atherosclerotic lesions and administered the FRβ immunotoxin in apolipoprotein E-deficient mice.

Tipranavir (TPV), a protease inhibitor (PI) inhibiting the enzymatic activity and dimerization of HIV-1 protease, exerts potent activity against multi-PI-resistant HIV-1 isolates. When a mixture of 11 multi-PI-resistant (but TPV-sensitive) clinical isolates (HIV(11MIX)), which included HIV(B) and HIV(C), was selected against TPV, HIV(11MIX) rapidly (by 10 passages [HIV(11MIX)(P10)]) acquired high-level TPV resistance and replicated at high concentrations of TPV. HIV(11MIX)(P10) contained various amino acid substitutions, including I54V and V82T.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are steroidal phytohormones that regulate plant growth and development. Whereas in Arabidopsis the network-like routes of BR biosynthesis have been elucidated in considerable detail, the roles of some of the biosynthetic enzymes and their participation in the different subpathways remained to be clarified. We investigated the function of the cytochrome P450 monooxygenase CYP90A1/CPD, which earlier had been proposed to act as a BR C-23 hydroxylase.

Hemorrhage from jejunal varices formed at the site of Roux-en-Y choledochojejunostomy is rather rare, and no guidelines have so far been established for its treatment. This report presents the cases of 2 patients with jejunal varices formed at the site of choledochojejunostomy that were treated using different methods. An obstruction of the extrahepatic portal vein resulted in massive gastrointestinal bleeding in both cases CASE 1: A 59-year-old male developed jejunal varices at the site of choledochojejunostomy.

Aim:   Operative ligation of the portosystemic shunt may control hepatic encephalopathy effectively, but the subsequent increase in portal vein pressure (PVP) leads to high mortality. Splenectomy can decrease inflow into the portal system, resulting in decreased portal pressure.

Methods:   We retrospectively examined the effect of splenectomy in combination with shunt closure on portosystemic encephalopathy.

Introduction: We report an instructive case of incidental renal cell carcinoma in a patient with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease who underwent simultaneous bilateral native nephrectomy and living donor renal transplantation.

Case Presentation: A 57-year-old Asian man with end-stage kidney disease due to autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease received a living kidney graft from his brother. Because of recurrent infection, chronic pain and enlarged kidneys, he underwent a bilateral nephrectomy with concomitant renal transplantation.

Background: When the kidney from a living donor with a double inferior vena cava (IVC) is harvested for renal transplantation, the short length of the renal vein may eventually create a technical problem for graft implantation. Herein, we have reported a rare case of renal vein extension using an autologous renal vein in a living donor with a double IVC.

Case Report: A 70-year-old man with end-stage renal disease owing to autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease underwent a living donor kidney graft from his wife who had a double IVC.

Background: Combination therapy with an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) and a long-acting β(2)-agonist (LABA) in a single inhaler is the mainstay of asthma management and salmeterol/fluticasone combination (SFC) and fixed-dose formoterol/budesonide combination (FBC) are currently available in Japan; however, there is nothing to choose between the two. The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of switching from SFC to FBC in patients with asthma not adequately controlled under the former treatment regimen.

Methods: This was a prospective, multicenter, open-label, uncontrolled longitudinal study in 87 adult patients with an Asthma Control Questionnaire, 5-item version (ACQ5) score of greater than 0.

Glucocorticoid-glutamatergic interactions have been proposed as a potential model to explain stress-mediated impairment of cognition. However, it is unknown whether glucocorticoid-zincergic interactions are involved in this impairment. Histochemically reactive zinc (Zn(2+)) is co-released with glutamate from zincergic neurons.

Canine epitheliotropic cutaneous lymphoma (cECL) is characterized by infiltration of neoplastic lymphocytes in the skin with a specific tropism for the epidermis. Migration of lymphocytes is strictly controlled by interactions between chemokines and chemokine receptors, which may be involved in the pathogenesis of cECL. In this study, we investigated mRNA transcription levels of several chemokines (CCL17, CCL19, CCL21, CCL22, CCL27, CCL28 and CXCL10) and chemokine receptors (CCR4, CCR7, CCR10 and CXCR3) in lesional skin of cECL by quantitative real-time RT-PCR.
