Low-valent zirconocene species reacted with 1,1,6,6-tetraalkyl-1,2,3,4,5-hexapentaenes to form both 1-zirconacyclopent-3-ynes and eta2-pi-coordinated complexes according to the alkyl groups (R) and the existence of the neutral ligand (L). Haptotropic interconvertion between these two complexes was observed. It was proposed that double insertion of isocyanide into the Zr-C bond of 1-zirconacyclopent-3-ynes takes place via the isocyanide adduct of the eta2-pi-complex as an intermediate.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation of the Falls Efficacy Scale (FES) to quality of life (QOL) among nursing home residents. The p300 protein shows a striking homology with cyclic-AMP-response-element-binding-protein binding protein (CBP) and both proteins form a family of DNA-binding transcriptional coactivators/histone acetyltransferases. The authors, herein, report a therapy-related acute myeloid leukemia with MLL-p300 fusion gene. Spectral karyotyping clarified that chromosome 11 is involved in complex t(1;22;11)(q44;q13;q23), and is fused to the chromosome 22, and direct sequencing revealed the fusion of exon 8 of MLL and exon 15 of p300 in this case.

A spontaneous transition phenomena between two states of a plasma with an internal transport barrier (ITB) is observed in the steady-state phase of the magnetic shear in the negative magnetic shear plasma in the JT-60U tokamak. These two ITB states are characterized by different profiles of the second radial derivative of the ion temperature inside the ITB region (one has a weak concave shape and the other has a strong convex shape) and by different degrees of sharpness of the interfaces between the L mode and the ITB region, which is determined by the turbulence penetration into the ITB region.

For investigating the effects of chemical stimulation to cultured cells, we have developed a quartz crystal sensor system with a micro charge-coupled device (CCD) camera that enables microphotograph imaging simultaneously with quartz crystal measurement. Human hepatoma cell line (HepG2) cells were cultured on the quartz crystal through a collagen film. The electrode of the quartz crystal was made of indium tin oxide (ITO) transparent electrodes that enable to obtain a transparent mode photograph.

The aim of this study is to describe the effect of transarterial embolization from the ophthalmic artery as a pretreatment for orbital exenteration. A 75-year-old Chinese man with a 7-year history of gradual increase of the left eye swelling showed a massive conjunctival tumor growing outwardly from the interpalpebral fissure and had no light perception in the left eye. Magnetic resonance imaging showed orbital invasion of the tumor around the left eyeglobe.

Peroxynitrite, a reactive nitrogen species generated from nitric oxide and superoxide anion radical, is an endogenous potential risk factor for human cancer. When 2'-deoxycytidine was incubated with peroxynitrite at neutral pH and 37 degrees C, the reaction was greatly enhanced by the addition of ammonium bromide. The amount of stress imposed on shoulder and elbow appears to be directly correlated with the degree of maximum shoulder external rotation (MER) during throwing motions. The objective of the present study was to examine whether the passive range of shoulder external rotation (ER), the maximum shoulder external rotation angle (MER) during throwing, and the ratio of MER to ER are related to the incidence of the elbow injury. A mixed design with one between-factor (a history of the elbow injury) and two within-factors (ER and MER) was used to analyze the difference between baseball players with and without a history of medial elbow pain. Twenty high school baseball players who had experienced the medial elbow pain within the previous month but who were not experiencing the pain on the day of the experiment were recruited (elbow-injured group).

To evaluate the ability of multidetector-row CT (MDCT) to predict a risk of hemorrhage in patients with esophageal varices, a total of 40 MDCT scans were performed in 29 patients who had been diagnosed with esophageal varices by conventional upper gastrointestinal tract endoscopy. In 11 patients, MDCT was performed both before and after endoscopic injection sclerotherapy (EIS). Endoscopically, the red color sign (RC sign) was present in 28 scans.

Expansion of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) from cord blood is highly desired for treatment and transplantation of adult patients for hematologic diseases. For efficient proliferation of HSCs, CD34(+) cells from cord blood were co-cultured with microencapsulated murine stromal cells (HESS-5) or immortalized human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in their conditioned media (CM). Bioactive substances for HSC proliferation in CM at the onset of culture are likely consumed by HSCs with time, and co-culturing with microencapsulated feeder cells ensures a continuous supply.

Collagens are widely used in medical applications, but animal-derived collagens have several drawbacks, such as low thermal stability, nonspecific cell attachment, and susceptibility to contamination by infectious pathogens, such as prions, which may transfect humans. A zonal magnetic field is found in a toroidal plasma. The magnetic field has a symmetric bandlike structure, which is uniform in the toroidal and poloidal directions and varies radially with a finite wavelength of mesoscale, which is analogous to zonal flows. A time-dependent bicoherence analysis reveals that the magnetic field should be generated by the background plasma turbulence.

Objective: MYH9 disorders are characterised by giant platelets, thrombocytopenia, and Döhle body-like cytoplasmic granulocyte inclusion bodies that result from mutations in MYH9, the gene for non-muscle myosin heavy chain-IIA (NMMHC-IIA). MYH9 R702 mutations are highly associated with Alport manifestations and result in Epstein syndrome. The aim of our study was to determine the haematological characteristics of MYH9 disorders as a result of R702 mutations to aid in making a proper diagnosis.
