Although the importance of microscale and macroscale heterogeneity at the single-cell and whole-system levels, respectively, has been well accepted, the presence and functions of mesoscale heterogeneity, such as cell clusters with distinct properties, have been poorly recognized. We investigated the biological importance of mesoscale heterogeneity in signal-relaying abilities (excitability) in the self-organization of spiral waves of intercellular communications by studying the self-organized pattern formation in a population of Dictyostelium discoideum cells, a classical signal-relaying system model.

Organic hydrides can store hydrogen via chemical bonding under ambient conditions, enabling the safe storage and transportation of hydrogen gas using the same infrastructure for gasoline. However, in previous research, most organic hydrides have been produced from petroleum, and therefore replacing them with earth-abundant or renewable compounds is essential to ensure sustainability. This study demonstrates dihydrolevoglucosenone (CyreneTM), which is a biodegradable liquid ketone that is produced directly from biomass without pretreatments on an industrial scale, as a new renewable organic hydride.

Clinical impact of multidisciplinary team management on postoperative short-term outcomes in colorectral cancer surgery.

The multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach has become the standard for perioperative patient care. At our institution, a multidisciplinary perioperative care team called "Surgical, Nutrition and Rehabilitation Integrated Services for Excellence Team (SUNRISE)" was established for all patients with gastrointestinal cancer undergoing surgery. This study aimed to elucidate the significance of SUNRISE as a perioperative MDT by comparing short-term postoperative outcomes before and after the introduction of SUNRISE in patients with colorectal cancer.

Clinical Impact of Weight Loss During Hospitalization on Prognosis After Pancreatic Surgery.

Purpose This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between early-stage weight loss (WL) during hospitalization after pancreatic surgery and prognosis and investigate risk factors affecting WL. Methods We included 68 patients diagnosed with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) who underwent radical surgery. The %WL value was calculated based on the percentage of body weight at discharge compared with the body weight at admission.

Postmenopausal Shrinkage of Uterine Myomas: A Retrospective Study of 97 Cases Monitored Annually for 10 Years.

Introduction and aim Both patients and gynecologists are concerned about how much and how quickly myomas shrink after menopause. This study aimed to elucidate clinical findings that may be associated with postmenopausal shrinkage of uterine myomas. Materials and methods This study included 97 patients who underwent menopause by August 2012, had myoma nodules with the longest diameter between 50 mm and 160 mm, and visited our specialized myoma clinic annually for at least 10 years after menopause.

Singularity biology is a scientific field that targets drastic state changes in multicellular systems, aiming to discover the key cells that induce the state change and investigate the mechanisms behind them. To achieve this goal, we developed a trans-scale optical imaging system (trans-scale scope), that is capable of capturing both macroscale changes across the entire system and the micro-scale behavior of individual cells, surpassing the cell observation capabilities of traditional microscopes. We developed two units of the trans-scale scope, named AMATERAS-1 and -2, which demonstrated the ability to observe multicellular systems consisting of over one million cells in a single field of view with sub-cellular resolution.

Robot-Assisted Surgery for Reversed Intestinal Malrotation with Concurrent Cecal Carcinoma: A Case Report.

Metastasis of cervical cancer indicated by elevation of serum CA125 produced by mediastinal lymph nodes: a case report.

Background: In patient assessment for recurrence of neoplasia, a biomarker that shows an elevated serum value before the first treatment is a candidate for follow-up examination. The biomarker squamous cell carcinoma antigen is usually utilized for follow-up of squamous cell cancer of the cervix.

Case Presentation: We herein report a 30-year-old Japanese woman of postoperative metastasis of cervical squamous cell cancer to the mediastinal and supraclavicular lymph nodes as indicated by an elevated serum cancer antigen 125 concentration and not by the squamous cell carcinoma antigen value.

Lung cancer frequently metastasizes to the bones. An in vivo model is urgently required to identify potential therapeutic targets for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer with bone metastasis. We established a lung adenocarcinoma cell subline (H322L-BO4) that specifically showed metastasis to the leg bones and adrenal glands.

Yogurt is a traditional fermented food that is accepted worldwide for its high palatability and various health values. The milk protein contained in yogurt exhibits different physical and biological properties from those of non-fermented milk protein due to the fermentation and manufacturing processes. These differences are suggested to affect the time it takes to digest and absorb milk protein, which in turn will influence the blood levels of amino acids and/or hormones, such as insulin, and thereby, the rate of skeletal muscle protein synthesis via the activation of intracellular signaling, such as the mTORC1 pathway.

Set yogurt's physical characteristics are greatly affected by the homogenization and heat treatment processes. In our previous study, set yogurt treated at 130°C and with the fat particle size reduced to ≤0.6 μm had equivalent curd strength, less syneresis and smoother texture than yogurt treated at 95°C.

Prevention of vasculitis and vascular pain by side route administration of vinorelbine: A case report.

A 49-year-old female with non-small-cell lung cancer was placed on adjuvant chemotherapy with vinorelbine (25 mg/m: Day 1.8) and cisplatin (80 mg/m: Day 1). The simultaneous intravenous infusion of vinorelbine from the side route and 500 mL of saline from the main route successfully prevented vasculitis and vascular pain.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy after transcatheter arterial embolisation for haemobilia due to a pseudoaneurysm in the gallbladder: A case report.

Pseudoaneurysms of the cystic artery are a rare but significant complication of acute cholecystitis. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy may be a safe alternative to open cholecystectomy in such cases. We report the case of a female patient in her seventies, who presented with anaemia, jaundice, and hepatic dysfunction during hospitalisation for right knee pyogenic arthritis.

Community pharmacists' measurement of health-related quality of life for breast cancer with positive hormone receptors: A prospective observational study.
