Repair of DNA damage induced by the novel nucleoside analogue CNDAG through homologous recombination.

Purpose: We postulate that the deoxyguanosine analogue CNDAG [9-(2-C-cyano-2-deoxy-1-β-D-arabino-pentofuranosyl)guanine] likely causes a single-strand break after incorporation into DNA, similar to the action of its cytosine congener CNDAC, and that subsequent DNA replication across the unrepaired nick would generate a double-strand break. This study aimed at identifying cellular responses and repair mechanisms for CNDAG prodrugs, 2-amino-9-(2-C-cyano-2-deoxy-1-β-D-arabino-pentofuranosyl)-6-methoxy purine (6-OMe) and 9-(2-C-cyano-2-deoxy-1-β-D-arabino-pentofuranosyl)-2,6-diaminopurine (6-NH). Each compound is a substrate for adenosine deaminase, the action of which generates CNDAG.

Meckel diverticulum is the most common and well-known congenital anomaly of the digestive system. Although most cases are asymptomatic, Meckel diverticulum can have a variety of complications, including gastrointestinal bleeding as a result of peptic ulceration, diverticulitis, and small bowel obstruction. Although the radiologic findings of these complications have been reported, they are difficult to diagnose preoperatively because Meckel diverticulum is a small entity.

Successful Treatment of Life-threatening Bleeding Caused by Acquired Factor X Deficiency Associated with Respiratory Infection.

Acquired factor X deficiency (AFXD) is a very rare coagulation disorder. A 40-year-old man with no comorbidities suffering from a fever, malaise, and severe hemorrhagic symptoms, including massive hematuria, was emergently admitted. His platelet count was normal, but his prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time were markedly prolonged, which was thought to be due to autoantibody against a coagulation factor in the common pathway.

Successful treatment of methotrexate-associated classical Hodgkin lymphoma with brentuximab vedotin-combined chemotherapy: a case series.

Methotrexate (MTX)-associated classical Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL) is unlikely to regress following discontinuation of MTX, and its treatment usually requires chemotherapy. Standard chemotherapy for CHL is the ABVD regimen, which contains pneumotoxic bleomycin. This can be problematic in MTX-CHL patients suffering from an autoimmune disease (AID), such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), as they frequently have pulmonary complications.

Objective: Currently, the foreign surfaces of extracorporeal circulation devices are coated with an acrylate-based copolymer that creates a hydrophilic blood-contacting layer to enhance biocompatibility. Several reports of acrylate-based copolymer with respect to biocompatibility have been published; however, the adsorption of peptide compounds on acrylate-based copolymer-coated membranes still requires clarity. In this study, we aimed to understand the adsorption of several peptide compounds of various molecular weights, including albumin, lysozyme, and vancomycin, on acrylate-based copolymer-coated membranes using in vitro studies.

Background: Liver alignment between series/exams is challenged by dynamic morphology or variability in patient positioning or motion. Image registration can improve image interpretation and lesion co-localization. We assessed the performance of a convolutional neural network algorithm to register cross-sectional liver imaging series and compared its performance to manual image registration.

Purpose: The purpose of this article was to verify the usefulness and feasibility of a single-phase scan for pulmonary artery/vein separation using a bolus-tracking technique and to evaluate the influence of patient characteristics on differentiation of computed tomography (CT) values between arteries and veins.

Material And Methods: A total of 79 patients (60 male individuals and 19 female individuals, mean age 70 y) with suspected lung cancers or metastasis underwent contrast-enhanced chest CT and ultrasonic echocardiography. The CT values of the pulmonary arteries and veins were measured, and the difference in CT values was calculated.

Asymmetric synthesis of γ-amino alcohols from unprotected allylic alcohols by a copper-catalyzed hydroamination strategy has been developed. Using easily accessible starting materials, a range of chiral 1,3-amino alcohols were prepared with excellent regio- and enantioselectivity. Further, this protocol provided an efficient one-step method for the enantioselective synthesis of γ-amino alcohols in an intermolecular manner.

Fusariosis is a critical infectious complication that can develop in immunocompromised hosts, mainly under conditions of prolonged neutropenia, and is often disseminated and associated with a high mortality rate. Disseminated fusariosis developing during the course of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a critical condition, and there have been few reports of successful treatment of cases complicated with fusariosis before HSCT. A survey of the implementation status of selected infection control strategies in neonatal intensive care units in Japan.

Background: Infection control strategies are implemented in all neonatal intensive care units (NICUs); however, the details of the strategies seem to differ among institutions. The purpose of this survey was to investigate the current implementation status of infection control strategies in NICUs in Japan and to identify and recommend appropriate strategies for the prevention of outbreaks in neonatal units.

Methods: This survey documented the current implementation status and methods of selected infection prevention and control measures (active surveillance cultures and standard precaution) in 453 Japanese NICUs/neonatal units registered with the Japan Society of Perinatal and Neonatal Medicine, using questionnaires, in May 2018.

Incidence and In-Hospital Mortality of Neonatal Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation in Japan: An Observational Study of a Nationwide Hospital Claims Database.

This study aimed to estimate the incidence and prognosis of neonatal disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in Japan by analyzing data retrieved from a national administrative database. Clinically, the prognosis of DIC in neonates is poor, but there is little epidemiological data in Japan. This retrospective observational study identified patients diagnosed with neonatal DIC and who were registered in the Japanese diagnosis procedure combination (DPC) database between April 1, 2014 and March 31, 2016.

Hepatobiliary phase hypointense nodule without arterial phase hyperenhancement as a risk factor for late recurrence (>1 year) of hepatocellular carcinoma after surgery.

Aim: To evaluate the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features, including liver stiffness measured by magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) and the presence of hepatobiliary phase (HBP) hypointense nodule without arterial phase hyperenhancement (APHE), for predicting late recurrence (>1 year) after surgery for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included 124 consecutive patients who had undergone surgery for HCC and preoperative MRI. After excluding patients with early recurrence within 1 year after surgery, 89 patients were analysed.

Aims/introduction: Urinary kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) has been associated with proximal tubular damage in human and animal studies. Although it has been recognized as a biomarker of acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease, its significance in the serum remains unclear. Therefore, we examined the relationship of serum and urinary KIM-1 levels with renal parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes.

The evaluation of the appropriate gentamicin use for preterm infants.

Gentamicin (GM) is used for neonates as the initial treatment for neonatal bacterial infection. An association between high trough GM levels and the elevation of the serum creatinine (sCr) level and hearing loss has been reported, although there have been no reports investigating the serial changes in the sCr level in preterm neonates treated with GM. The present study evaluated the serial changes in the sCr level and the incidence of hearing loss in preterm neonates treated with GM.
