Article Synopsis
  • Sever's disease is a common cause of foot pain in children and may be linked to a higher prevalence of ADHD, particularly among boys.
  • A study involving 88 children with Sever's disease found 70.5% had ADHD compared to just 13.3% in a control group.
  • The findings suggest that children with Sever's disease, especially males, should be assessed for ADHD, as this could provide important insights for treatment.

Objective: Postoperative junctional ectopic tachycardia (JET) is usually a self-limiting condition; however, when combined with atrioventricular dissociation and postoperative ventricular dysfunction, it may increase morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to determine the overall incidence of JET following congenital heart surgery, to identify patient and procedure-related risk factors, and to evaluate the clinical impact of JET on outcomes.

Methods: The records of 2,814 patients who underwent cardiac surgery over a five-year period were reviewed retrospectively to identify those with JET.

Small airway fibrosis plays a critical role in the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Previous research has suggested that Urotensin-II (U-II) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) may contribute to pathological fibrosis in various organs, including the cardiovascular system, lungs, and liver. However, their specific relationship with airway fibrosis in COPD has not yet been thoroughly investigated.

Article Synopsis
  • * Out of 44 patients, the procedure was successful in 43 cases (97.7%), with minimal complications, although one patient required surgery due to device embolization and significant tissue damage.
  • * Over a follow-up period of 43 months, AR worsened in only 1 patient, while it improved in several others, showing that transcatheter closure is a safe and effective treatment method for these conditions.

  • The Ross method is the main surgical treatment for pediatric aortic valve diseases, with positive long-term outcomes documented in this study involving 20 patients between 2015 and 2019.
  • Most patients had aortic valve stenosis, and while there were some complications, such as one early death and a few cases of aortic regurgitation, the overall reoperation rates were low.
  • The study concludes that Ross and Ross-Konno surgeries are effective for treating aortic diseases in children, showing low mortality and good long-term results.

Water pollution has become a major concern in recent years, affecting over 2 billion people worldwide, according to UNESCO. This pollution can occur by either naturally, such as algal blooms, or man-made when toxic substances are released into water bodies like lakes, rivers, springs, and oceans. To address this issue and monitor surface-level water pollution in local water bodies, an informative real-time vision-based surveillance system has been developed in conjunction with large language models (LLMs).

Background: Intimal hyperplasia is a normal adaptive feature of arteries in response to injuries, which include invasive vascular interventions. Its development limits the long-term success of bypass grafts. Various pharmacological agents have been successfully employed in experimental models to reduce the degree of intimal hyperplasia.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of transverse aortic arch stenting and evaluate the course of hypertension and the act of arch stenting on systemic hypertension.

Methods: The transverse aortic arch stenting procedures between January 2007 and May 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. Detailed procedure information, technical aspects, pressure measurements, angiographic data, balloons and stents used, complications, and immediate results were examined.

In this paper, we address the critical task of 24-h streamflow forecasting using advanced deep-learning models, with a primary focus on the transformer architecture which has seen limited application in this specific task. We compare the performance of five different models, including persistence, long short-term memory (LSTM), Seq2Seq, GRU, and transformer, across four distinct regions. The evaluation is based on three performance metrics: Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE), Pearson's , and normalized root mean square error (NRMSE).

Objective: Preserving and restoring meniscus function is crucial for maintaining knee biomechanics and overall functionality. To enhance the healing process after meniscus repair, various biological techniques have been introduced. In this study, three treatment approaches examined were bone marrow venting with stem cells (BMVP), anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) with meniscus repair, and isolated meniscus repair.

Despite advancements in postoperative outcomes after Fontan surgery, there remains a risk of suboptimal outcomes and significant morbidity in the early postoperative period. Anatomical obstructions in the Fontan pathway can lead to prolonged pleural effusion or ascites, cyanosis, and low cardiac output syndrome (LCOS). Transcatheter interventions offer an alternative to early re-surgery for treating these complications.

In individuals with a single ventricle undergoing evaluation before Fontan surgery, the presence of excessive pulmonary blood flow can contribute to increased pulmonary artery pressure, notably in those who had a Glenn procedure with antegrade pulmonary flow. 28 patients who had previously undergone Glenn anastomosis with antegrade pulmonary blood flow (APBF) and with elevated mean pulmonary artery (mPAP) pressure > 15 mmHg in diagnostic catheter angiography were included in the study. After addressing other anatomical factors that could affect pulmonary artery pressure, APBF was occluded with semi-compliant, Wedge or sizing balloons to measure pulmonary artery pressure accurately.

  • Tongue abscess (TA) is a rare but serious condition that requires prompt treatment, primarily through surgical drainage.
  • This study reviews the clinical and lab findings of 11 patients with TA, highlighting their demographics and the locations of the abscesses.
  • The research underscores the urgent need for interventions, such as tracheotomy, due to the risk of airway obstruction, and notes challenges in treating abscesses found in unexpected areas.

In this case, we present a condition where the extension of the hamate hook in the Guyon canal can damage the ulnar artery or its branches, leading to the development of an aneurysm or pseudoaneurysm. The patient, a 12-year-old female, presented to our clinic with a complaint of an uncontrolled palm lump that has been growing for several months and began to bleed in a pulsatile manner after trauma. She was an amateur volleyball player who trained twice weekly for two hours.

Floods and droughts significantly affect agricultural activities and pose a threat to food security by subsequently reducing agricultural production. The impact of flood events is distributed disproportionately among agricultural communities based on their socio-economic fabric. Understanding climate-related hazards is critical for planning mitigation measures to secure vulnerable communities.

Flooding is the leading natural hazard in Iowa and has resulted in billions of dollars of damage to properties and critical infrastructure over the past couple of decades. Land alterations, urbanization, and changing precipitation regimes increase the magnitude and frequency of flood events. Considering the increasing risk, flood mitigation efforts are significant to reduce future losses.

Background: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) encompasses a range of hip disorders, from dysplasia to dislocation. One key factor is sex, with women being four to eight times more susceptible to DDH than men. However, there have been no studies investigating the second-to-fourth digit ratio (2D:4D), a biomarker of prenatal sex steroid exposure, in DDH patients.
