Association between Human Leukocyte Antigens (HLA-A, -B, and -DR) and end-stage renal disease in Kuwaiti patients awaiting transplantation.

The number of patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) is increasing considerably worldwide. Human Leukocyte Antigens (HLAs) are relevant for the expression of many immunological diseases and contribute to the development of different nephropathies. Therefore, we aimed from the present work to investigate the possible association between the frequency of HLA-A, -B, and -DR antigens and ESRD in Kuwaiti patients awaiting renal transplant.

Infection related renal impairment: a major cause of acute allograft dysfunction.

We prospectively analyzed the impact of post-transplant infections on the renal function in 532 stable renal transplant recipients (M=340; F=192) over a period of 5 years. Their age ranged from 3-75 years (40+14 years). During the follow-up period, 52 patients expired and 64 lost on followup.

Thyroid function, autoantibodies, and HLA tissue typing in children with alopecia areata.

A total of 80 Kuwaiti children with alopecia areata (AA), without clinical evidence of thyroid disease, were screened for the presence of thyroid abnormalities, and 50 unrelated children with AA were tissue typed for human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I and class II antigens. Thyroid abnormalities were detected in 14 children (17.5%).

Inferior long-term outcome of renal transplantation in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Objective: To retrospectively review the long-term outcome of renal transplant in diabetics at Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital and Hamad Al-Essa Organ Transplant Center, Kuwait from 1983 to 1998.

Methods: There were 631 renal transplant patients, comprising 79 (12.5%) patients with pretransplant diabetes mellitus (pre-TDM), 117 (18.
