The giant magnetocaloric compound Gd5Ge4 is the only member of the Gd5(SixGe1-x)4 family where three-dimensional exchange interactions between two-dimensional correlated layers of the crystallographic structure are so weak that spontaneous ferromagnetism does not set in at any temperature. In this Letter we explore the possibility to reach the ferromagnetic state by application of hydrostatic pressure. Linear thermal expansion and magnetic measurements under pressure reveal that the reduction of the unit cell volume induces a spatially phase-segregated ground state below 10 kbar.

We performed a screen for signaling genes by selecting mutant strains of Dictyostelium that fail to develop spores in a pure population but sporulate well in chimerae with wild type cells. We found 9 strains whose sporulation was induced up to 10 million-fold in chimerae. Most strains were also able to sporulate in chimerae with each other, but 2 pairs failed to do so, suggesting that the genes in each pair participate in the production of 1 signal.

Isorhamnetin and quercetin produced endothelium-independent vasodilator effects in rat aorta, rat mesenteric arteries, rat portal vein and porcine coronary arteries. The effects of the two flavonoids were similar in arteries stimulated by noradrenaline, KCl, U46619 or phorbol esters but the two flavonoids were more potent in the coronary arteries than in the aorta. A distinct feature of development in the simple eukaryote Dictyostelium discoideum is an aggregative transition from a unicellular to a multicellular phase. Using genome-wide transcriptional analysis we show that this transition is accompanied by a dramatic change in the expression of more than 25% of the genes in the genome. We also show that the transcription patterns of these genes are not sensitive to the strain or the nutritional history, indicating that Dictyostelium development is a robust physiological process that is accompanied by stereotypical transcriptional events.

We have studied the effects of the class Ic antiarrhythmic propafenone on K+ currents in freshly isolated smooth muscle cells from rat portal veins and on the spontaneous contractions in whole tissues. Under Ca2+-free conditions, when cells were clamped at -80 mV (whole-cell configuration) depolarizing steps from -80 to +50 mV induced a family of K+ currents (I(Ktotal)) that mainly comprised the delayed rectifier current [I(K(V))], whereas when held at -10 mV only small-amplitude, noninactivating, currents (I(NI)) were recorded. To characterize the thromboxane A2 (TXA2) -induced resistance to the vasodilator effects of the nitric oxide (NO)/cGMP pathway in pulmonary arteries, we have studied the effects of the NO donor sodium nitroprusside on intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) and contractile force recorded simultaneously in isolated piglet pulmonary arteries loaded with fura-2 and contracted with norepinephrine or the TXA2 mimetic U46619 and by activation of protein kinase C (PKC) with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate. In the TXA2 mimetic- and phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate plus norepinephrine-stimulated arteries, nitroprusside exhibited lower vasodilator efficacy (and lower potency in the TXA2 mimetic-stimulated arteries) but similar reductions in [Ca2+]i compared with arteries activated by norepinephrine. The nonselective serine/threonine kinase inhibitor staurosporine, but not the selective inhibitor of PKC bisindolylmaleimide, potentiated the relaxation of nitroprusside in the TXA2 mimetic-stimulated arteries.

Thermal expansion measurements have been performed on single crystals of R2-2xSr1+2xMn2O7 (R=Pr, Nd, and Dy) over a wide temperature range (4-900 K). Our analysis allows us to give a general explanation for the large lattice anomalies observed in the layered manganites.
