The benefits and limitations of intravenous thrombolytic therapy using recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (alteplase) are discussed. Pathophysiological background of thrombolysis, its history and ways of clinical usage, the major clinical trials, assessing safety and efficacy of the method, and practical recommendations, are presented.

To elucidate correlation between processes of lipid peroxidation (LP) and accumulation of peptides from the group of "middle molecules" (PMM) in blood, we made investigation of blood of 81 patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Gel-filtration column chromatography for PMM separation was performed. Divided fractions were registered with UV-monitor at wave length equal to 254 nm.

The spectra of 31P-NMR erythrocytes in patients with initial symptoms of cerebral circulation insufficiency compared to blood-donors were analysed. The expansion of 31P-NMR ATP and 2,3-DPG signals is observed in pathology. On these grounds the authors have come to a conclusion that the population of erythrocytes is more heterogeneous as to oxygen saturation than in normal state.

The investigation of interferon status in 54 diabetes mellitus patients gave evidence for high levels of blood serum interferon, leukocyte inhibition of alpha-interferon production against moderate synthesis of gamma interferon. More marked alterations in the interferon status were registered in severe insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus complicated by angiopathies and running more than 5 years. Compensation of metabolic processes was not relevant to interferon status.

A total systems approach was used to study the structural and functional properties of red blood cells in 100 patients suffering from atherosclerotic circulatory encephalopathy, stages I-III: aggregation, deformability, superficial cytoarchitectonics, the content of ATP and 2,3 DPH, transport of univalent cations, and the cholesterol/phospholipid index of membranes. It has been demonstrated that as the atherosclerotic process progresses, the membrane rigidity increases as a result of excessive concentration of cholesterol in the cell, aggregation is enhanced, transport of ions and substances gets disturbed, the processes of glycolysis and synthesis of macroergs get inhibited. All this brings about the derangement of transport function of the cells because of disturbance of the properties of moving in the system of microcirculation.

Proliferative pools of Helianthus tuberosus L. explants tissues were studied using autoradiography with 3H-thymidine in the course of normal growth in vitro and tumorous growth induced by Agrobacterium tumefaciens. It is determined that on the 3d or 4th day of tumorous transformation the number of cycling cells reaches 30% whereas that of normally growing explants showed 10-11%.

It is established that under conditions of the culture in vitro the greatest amount of crown-gall swellings on topinambur and carrot explants is formed with Agrobacterium tumefaciens inoculation 4 and 6 hrs after the tissue extraction and planting, which corresponds to the G1-phase of the 1st cellular cycle. In the inoculated tissue cells entrance to the S-phase is accelerated and the maximal number of labelled nuclei is found 10 hrs earlier.
