The differential diagnosis of prostate cancer is problematic due to the lack of markers with high diagnostic accuracy. We previously demonstrated the increased binding of IgG to human plasminogen (PLG) in plasma of patients with prostate cancer (PC) compared to healthy controls. Heavy and light chains of PLG (PLG-H and PLG-L) were immobilized on 96-well plates and the binding of IgG to PLG-H and PLG-L was analyzed in serum from 30 prostate cancer (PC) patients, 30 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and 30 healthy controls using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Purpose: Risk of complications following hernia repair is the key parameter to assess risk/benefit ratio of a technique. As mesh devices are permanent, their risks are life-long. Too many reports in the past assessed mesh safety prematurely after short follow-ups.

Objectives: Preliminary investigations suggest that a novel blue light (BL) laser with a wavelength of 445 nm is comparable to the commonly utilized potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) laser (532 nm) for treatment of various laryngeal pathologies. The objective of the current study is to make a direct histological comparison of the degree of vocal fold scarring after either BL or KTP laser treatment in an animal model.

Study Design: This was a randomized controlled study using rats.

"The majority of hernias can be satisfactorily repaired by using the tissues at hand. The use of mesh prosthesis should be restricted to those few hernias in which tension or lack of good fascial structures prevents a secure primary repair. This group includes large direct inguinal hernias and incisional hernias in which the defect is too large to close primarily without undue tension.

Almost all genomic studies of breast cancer have focused on well-established tumours because it is technically challenging to study the earliest mutational events occurring in human breast epithelial cells. To address this we created a unique dataset of epithelial samples ductoscopically obtained from ducts leading to breast carcinomas and matched samples from ducts on the opposite side of the nipple. Here, we demonstrate that perturbations in mRNA abundance, with increasing proximity to tumour, cannot be explained by copy number aberrations.

Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is the most common type of obstructive uropathy in children. Reflux nephropathy (RN) is one of the most common complications of VUR that inevitably leads to chronic kidney disease. Patients with end-stage kidney disease require costly treatment, and the only way to cure them is kidney transplantation.

Background And Study Aims: Accurate endoscopic detection of dysplasia in patients with Barrett's esophagus (BE) remains a major clinical challenge. The current standard is to take multiple biopsies under endoscopic image guidance, but this leaves the majority of the tissue unsampled, leading to significant risk of missing dysplasia. Furthermore, determining whether there is submucosal invasion is essential for proper staging.

We demonstrate a semiconductor disk laser emitting at 1275nm, employing a wafer fused AlInGaAs/InP-AlAs/GaAs gain mirror. A built-in Au-reflector was used to reflect the pump light not absorbed in a single pass through the gain chip active region. The laser exhibited an output power of 33 W for a pump spot with a diameter of 0.

A significant carbon diffusion mobility acceleration as a result of cyclic γ↔ε martensitic transformations in iron-manganese alloy is determined by one- and two-dimensional structure defects of ε-martensite with face-centered close-packed lattice. Such defects (dislocations, low angle sub-boundaries of dislocations, chaotic stacking faults) were formed during cyclic γ↔ε martensitic transformations. Peak carbon diffusion coefficient increase was observed under thermocycling when maximum quantity of lattice defects increase was fixed.

Polypropylene (PP) transvaginal mesh (TVM) repair for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) has shown promising short-term objective cure rates. However, life-altering complications have been associated with the placement of PP mesh for SUI repair. PP degradation as a result of the foreign body reaction (FBR) has been proposed as a contributing factor to mesh complications.

Objective: The ubiquitous use of polypropylene mesh in hernia surgery has spawned a new clinical syndrome: chronic post-herniorrhaphy neuralgia. A subset of that clinical picture is dysejaculation, sexual pain, and orchialgia. We propose to identify the processes that lead to that pain.

Direct modulation at >25 Gbps is achieved with 1310 nm wavelength wafer fused VCSELs by adjusting the strain in the quantum well active region and the cavity photon lifetime. 25 + Gbps large signal modulation with 10 BER at 1310 nm across 10 km of standard single mode fiber is demonstrated.

Primary sinonasal and middle ear neuroendocrine carcinomas are rare malignancies of the head and neck. Owing to the rarity of these tumors, the clinical behavior and optimal management of these tumors are not well defined. We present a case of an incidentally discovered sinonasal neuroendocrine carcinoma that was found to originate from the Eustachian tube, which has not previously been described in the literature.

Introduction: The binding of plasminogen (Pg) to cell receptors and extracellular ligands facilitates its activation to plasmin, which stimulates the extracellular matrix degradation, neoangiogenesis and tumor invasion. Plasmin can also degrade IgG thereby exposing C-terminal lysine residues. Previously, we have found IgG specifically bounded to Pg in the plasma of patients with malignant tumors.

Polarization mode control is enhanced in wafer-fused vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers emitting at 1310 nm wavelength by etching two symmetrically arranged arcs above the gain structure within the laser cavity. The intracavity patterning introduces birefringence and dichroism, which discriminates between the two polarization states of the fundamental transverse modes. We find that the cavity modifications define the polarization angle at threshold with respect to the crystal axes, and increase the gain anisotropy and birefringence on average, leading to an increase in the polarization switching current.

Objective: The differential diagnosis between retinal detachment and melanoma metastatic to the vitreous can be challenging, both clinically and cytologically. We demonstrate the diagnostic features and pitfalls of the cytological assessment.

Study Design: A case of a metastatic melanoma to the vitreous is compared to a case of retinal detachment initially suspected as melanoma metastasis.

Purpose: The objective is to compare nerve densities in explanted polypropylene meshes in patients with or without chronic pain. Pain has supplanted recurrences as a complication of hernia surgery. The increased incidence of pain mirrors a parallel increase in the use of polypropylene meshes.

Implantation of a synthetic midurethral sling (SMUS) is the most commonly performed anti-incontinence operation in women worldwide. The effectiveness of the SMUS is comparable to that of the historical gold standards--autologous fascial slings and the Burch colposuspension. Much controversy, however, has evolved regarding the safety of this type of sling.

We report on 1270 nm vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VECSELs) with up to 59% conversion efficiency and maximum output power of 8.5 W (pump limited), at 5°C heat sink temperature. These VECSELs comprised wafer-fused gain mirrors in the flip-chip (thin-disk) heat dissipation scheme.
