Objectives: To evaluate the relative importance of changing paternity ("primipaternity", direct inquiry with patients) in multiparas versus prolonged birth/pregnancy interval as risk factors for preeclampsia (PE) by a logistic regression model comparing the adjusted odds ratios of both exposures.

Design: Assessment of all consecutive singleton deliveries (from 22 weeks onwards) at South-Reunion University's maternity (Reunion Island, Indian Ocean) over 23 years (2001-2023) using an epidemiological perinatal database on obstetrical factors (264 items in total, of which, chronic or gestational hypertension, proteinuria, HELLP syndrome).

Results: Among the 53,572 multiparous singleton pregnancies, we identified 33,312 (62%) of multiparas who gave consecutive births, allowing calculation of birth intervals.

Article Synopsis
  • Infants with severe epidermolysis bullosa (EB) often face dehydration and malnutrition, but their nutritional needs are not well studied.
  • A study looked at 27 newborns with EB to assess their nutritional status and found many had low sodium levels and needed extra fluids and sodium.
  • The results suggest that these infants require higher food and nutrient intake than usual to grow properly and stay healthy, especially during their first month of life.

MYC is one of the most important therapeutic targets in human cancer. Many attempts have been made to develop small molecules that could be used to curb its activity in patients, but most failed to identify a suitable direct inhibitor. After years of preclinical characterization, a tissue-penetrating peptide MYC inhibitor, called Omomyc, has been recently successfully used in a Phase I dose escalation study in late-stage, all-comers solid tumour patients.

Given the selection of elderly patients with AML in first complete remission (CR1) the advantage of consolidation with allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) over chemotherapy is still unclear. Newly diagnosed AML patients in CR1 aged 60-75 years were registered and a donor search initiated. After one consolidation cycle, patients with a matched donor were randomized to HCT with fludarabine/low-dose total body irradiation and cyclosporine/mycophenolate mofetil immunosuppression or conventional non-HCT.

The nutrition of preterm infants remains contaminated by wrong beliefs that reflect inexactitudes and perpetuate old practices. In this narrative review, we report current evidence in preterm neonates and in preterm neonates undergoing surgery. Convictions that necrotizing enterocolitis is reduced by the delay in introducing enteral feeding, a slow advancement in enteral feeds, and the systematic control of residual gastric volumes, should be abandoned.

Short-term outcome of myeloablative (MAC) and reduced intensity (RIC) conditioning in the prospective randomized international EBMT RICMAC study in patients with myelodyplastic syndrome (MDS) was comparable but longer follow up is lacking. Patients with MDS aged 18-65 years were randomized to receive MAC (N = 64) with busulfan/cyclophosphamide or RIC (n = 65) with busulfan/fludarabine followed by stem cell transplantation -(HCT) from HLA matched or mismatched donor. After a median follow-up of 6.

Article Synopsis
  • Diuretics are commonly used in neonatal wards, despite little proof of effectiveness for several conditions, prompting a study on their use rates in a multicenter French cohort.
  • An observational study included 86,032 neonates, finding an overall diuretic exposure rate of 8.5%, with significant variation across different medical centers (2.4% to 26.5%).
  • The main drugs used were furosemide, spironolactone, and dopamine, often prescribed for fluid retention, but practices differed among centers, sometimes exceeding safe dosage and treatment duration limits.

Article Synopsis
  • - A randomized study (MC-FludT.14/L Trial II) found that fludarabine plus treosulfan (30 g/m²) is an effective and well-tolerated conditioning treatment for older patients (ages 50-70) undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).
  • - Compared to other conditioning regimens (FluMel and BuCy), the study showed no difference in relapse rates after 2 years, but FluTreo resulted in significantly lower non-relapse mortality (NRM), indicating better tolerance.
  • - Overall survival (OS) rates were higher for

Perinatal nutritional factors may lead to decreased nephron endowment, decreased kidney function, and long-term development of chronic kidney disease and non-communicable diseases. At the same time, optimal postnatal nutrition and catch-up growth are associated with better neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants. Therefore, nutritional management of preterm infants is a major challenge for neonatologists.

  • The study compares the effects of using angiography contrast agents during transcatheter closure of patent ductus arteriosus (TCPDA) on kidney function in very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm infants.
  • Results showed that serum creatinine levels significantly increased in infants treated with contrast agents compared to those who were not, indicating potential harm to renal function.
  • The conclusion emphasizes the need to minimize or avoid the use of contrast agents during TCPDA to protect the kidney health of these vulnerable infants.

What Is This Summary About?: Severe aplastic anemia (SAA) and very severe aplastic anemia (vSAA) are blood diseases of the bone marrow. If a suitable donor for bone marrow transplant as initial treatment is unavailable, standard immunosuppression is used. Standard immunosuppression treatment includes horse antithymocyte globulin (hATG) and cyclosporin A (CsA).

Article Synopsis
  • Glial cells, like astrocytes, play an important role in how brain diseases progress, but we mostly know about them from animal studies.
  • Researchers found that in human brain injuries with bleeding, damaged areas showed more active astrocytes, which might help with recovery.
  • They discovered a special marker called GALECTIN3 that helps identify these active astrocytes and found a key signaling pathway that controls their ability to grow and form new brain cells.

Objectives: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare type of cancer that typically arises from glandular tissues, most commonly in the salivary glands. Although relatively rare, it represents a serious clinical issue as the management of the disease is highly complex being the only therapeutic options represented by invasive surgery and/or radiotherapy. In the present study, we have explored the potential of galectin-3 binding protein (LGALS3BP) as a novel target for antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) therapy in ACC.

HER-3 (also known as ErbB-3) is a human epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinases family member, and its expression in CRC (colorectal cancer) tissues was previously associated with poor prognosis. In this study, HER-3 expression was analyzed by immunohistochemistry in two cohorts of early and advanced metastatic CRC patients. The first cohort included 180 patients diagnosed with CRC in absence of lymph nodes or distant metastases (Stage I and Stage II), while the second was obtained from 53 advanced metastatic CRC patients who developed synchronous (SM) and metachronous (MM) liver metastases.

The persistence of a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a common condition in preterm infants with a prevalence inversely proportional to gestational age. PDA is associated with mild-to-severe gastrointestinal complications such as feeding intolerance, gastrointestinal perforation, and necrotizing enterocolitis, which represent a major challenge for the nutritional management in preterm infants. In this context, the Section on Nutrition, Gastroenterology and Metabolism and the Circulation Section of the European Society for Pediatric Research have joined forces to review the current knowledge on nutritional issues related to PDA in preterm infants.
